Abstract
A 12-year-old mixed-breed dog presented with a 2-month history of abdominal distension. Radiographic examination, abdominal ultrasonography, and computed tomography revealed a mass in the cecum (15.0 × 11.9 × 4.5 cm). The cecal mass was surgically removed and examined histopathologically. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells expressed S-100 and neuron specific enolase but not α-smooth muscle actin and CD117 (c-kit). These histologic and immunohistochemical features indicated that the mass was consistent with a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). In dogs, most MPNSTs arise from the brachial plexus, spinal nerve root, and skin of the extremities. However, gastrointestinal MPNSTs in dogs have not been described previously. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to describe cecal MPNST in a dog.

[PMID: 30654838 PMCID: PMC6337829 DOI: 10.1186/s13256-018-1896-4] [Citation(s) in RCA: 2] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/27/2018] [Accepted: 10/26/2018] [Indexed: 01/18/2023] Open
Abstract
Background Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are malignant tumors arising from a peripheral nerve or displaying nerve sheath differentiation. Gastrointestinal malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are rare and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the colon is even rarer. To date, only five cases have been reported as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor arising in the colon. This is probably the first case report of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the transverse colon associated with peritoneal metastasis. Case presentation A 25-year-old Indian man presented with a large abdominal mass. A computed tomography scan revealed a large 18 cm-sized mass in his transverse colon, suggestive of gastrointestinal stromal tumor. A wide local excision was performed. Histopathology showed sheets and fascicles of elongated to spindle-shaped tumor cells showing a moderate degree of pleomorphism and atypia. Based on morphology and immunohistochemistry, a final diagnosis of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the transverse colon was given. A peritoneal metastatic tumor deposit was identified grossly and confirmed on histopathology. Conclusion This is a rare case report discussing the detailed diagnostic approach along with an extensive review of the literature for malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor arising in the colon. Abstract
Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNST) are rare soft tissue sarcomas which largely occur in the extremities and the head and neck region. The tumours are aggressive with a high rate of recurrence. Radical surgical resection remains the treatment of choice with adjuvant radiation therapy and chemotherapy still failing to demonstrate a clear benefit. The gastrointestinal tract is an exceedingly rare site for these tumours. We report an unusual case of a young male with an MPNST of the small bowel who presented with an ileocolic intussusception and sigmoid perforation.

Abstract
Background Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) arise from a peripheral nerve or display nerve sheath differentiation. Most MPNSTs typically originate on the trunk, extremities, head, neck, and paravertebral regions. Gastrointestinal MPNSTs are rare entities with only 10 cases reported worldwide in the literatures. Case presentation Here, we report the first Chinese case of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the distal ileum presenting as intussusception. A 53-year-old female patient without pathological antecedent for neurofibromatosis was admitted with pain in the right lower abdomen and multiple episodes of vomiting for 1 week. Preoperative diagnosis was intussusception with a contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan (CECT) of the abdomen showing characteristic target sign. Due to difficulty reducing the ileum-colon intussusception, right hemicolectomy with ileocolostomy was performed. Histopathology was suggestive of low-grade MPNST. The patient received postoperative care and was followed up for 9 months. There is no sign of tumor recurrence and metastatic disease. Conclusions This case is unique in terms of a rare tumor presenting with unusual complication.
