Myoepithelioma of the Palatal Minor Salivary Gland: A Case Report

Myoepithelioma is an uncommon benign tumor of the orofacial region arising from the salivary glands. These tumors are composed of specifically myoepithelial cells lacking ductal differentiation and were initially considered as a type of pleomorphic adenoma. Though they commonly arise from the parotid gland, there are a few cases that emerge from the minor salivary glands of the palate and oral cavity. Myoepitheliomas resemble many other tumors arising from the palate including pleomorphic adenoma. This report depicts a case of myoepithelioma of the minor salivary gland of the palate in a 23-year-old patient and the successful management of the lesion.

Myoepithelioma of the Parotid Gland: A Case Report with Review of the Literature and Classic Histopathology

Myoepithelioma is a rare salivary gland neoplasm. They most commonly affect the major and minor salivary glands with the parotid gland being the most common, approximately 40%. Only 1% of all salivary gland neoplasms are myoepitheliomas. Myoepithelioma is usually a benign tumor arising from neoplastic myoepithelial or basket cells which are found between the basement membrane and the basal plasma membrane of acinar cells. They also contain multiple cellular elements. We present a case of a 73-year-old female with myoepithelioma of the parotid gland, an extremely rare neoplasm. There have been approximately 42 cases reported through 1985 and fewer than 100 cases through 1993. We will discuss the clinical presentation, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of such neoplasms.

Voluminous Myoepithelioma of the Minor Salivary Glands Involving the Base of the Tongue

Myoepithelioma is an extremely rare tumour subtype and diagnosis is based on a wide variation of cellular morphology. FNAC specimens do not always suffice for a definitive differential diagnosis which depends on histology and immunohistochemistry of the lesion. Case Presentation. A 54-year-old female came to our attention with dysphagia and dyslalia of 6-month standing. Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) examination revealed a voluminous mass on the right portion of the base of her tongue, where postcontrast T2-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) evidenced a hyperintense lesion. The fine-needle aspiration specimen taken for cytology was not diagnostic, as a differential diagnosis between myoepithelioma and a malignant neoplasm of the salivary glands necessitates parameters that cytology alone cannot provide. Therefore, the whole lesion was excised by diode laser through a transoral approach. Histology and immunohistochemistry of the completely excised lesion confirmed a myoepithelioma.

Plasmacytoid Myoepithelioma of the Hard Palate in a Child - A Rare Case Report

Myoepithelioma is a rare tumour accounting for 1-1.5% of salivary gland tumours, 21% of which occur in soft & hard palate. Cytologic features of these tumours are not well established leading to diagnostic pitfall in many cases on FNAC. However, as radiologic findings are overlapping and inconclusive in salivary gland tumours, preoperative cytologic diagnosis may help surgeons to plan surgery especially in patients requiring facial surgery. Here, we present a rare case of plasmacytoid myoepithelioma of the hard palate in an 11-year-old boy which was conclusively diagnosed on FNAC and further confirmed by histopathological and immunohistochemical studies. We have made an attempt to describe cytologic features of myoepithelioma with differential diagnosis of these tumours through review of literature.
