Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs) refer to eosinophilic infiltration of various sections of the gastrointestinal tract in the absence of secondary causes. Diagnosis of EGID requires histological evidence of eosinophilic infiltration of the GI tract. Here, we present a case of a young male with biopsy-proven eosinophilic gastroenteritis with a concomitant established diagnosis of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). 

Presently, EGIDs remain an underexplored clinical entity. While its pathophysiology is not fully understood at this time, TH2 mediated activation of B-cells and subsequent stimulation of eosinophils locally appears to be at play. This is in contrast to the TH1 predominant cytokine profile underlying ITP, which this patient also has. Treatment typically involves dietary modifications and glucocorticoids. 

Postpartum Eosinophilic Ascites: A Case Report

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGID) are a group of conditions characterized by histopathologic eosinophilic infiltrates in one or more segments of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It occurs in the absence of known causes for eosinophilia. It can affect every part of the gastrointestinal tract, but eosinophilic ascites (EA) is uncommon. There is a clinical overlap between EGID and GI involvement of hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES), so distinguishing them may not be easy. We report a case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis in a 26-year-old-woman with the uncommon presentation of eosinophilic ascites after delivery. It is vital to maintain a high grade of suspicion to diagnose these disorders and exclude the secondary causes since treatment varies. In addition, the occurrence of this postpartum syndrome has been described, so it is essential to recognize this entity in this period.

An Unusual Case of Eosinophilic Ascites with Pleural Effusion - A Rare Manifestation of Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis (EGE)

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is a rare disease characterized by tissue eosinophilia and can affect any part of gastrointestinal (GI) tract from the esophagus to the rectum, although stomach and small intestine are sites most frequently involved. We hereby describe an unusual case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis affecting the stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum involving the mucosa and serosa. A twenty-oneyearold student presented with fever, diarrhea, ascites and right pleural effusion. Total leucocyte count was high with marked eosinophilia. Ascitic and pleural fluid were exudates with low adenosine deaminase (ADA) level and predominant eosinophils. Biopsy specimens of the stomach, duodenum, ileum, colon and rectum showed dense eosinophilic infiltration of lamina propria. Based on the constellation of clinical features and investigations, a diagnosis of EGE was made, and therapy with prednisone was started. Symptoms and peripheral eosinophilia rapidly resolved. It is thus imperative to diagnose this disease early and institute the necessary treatment.

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis: Atypical cause for chronic diarrhea in human immunodeficiency virus-associated immunosuppression

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is an uncommon disease in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised. We describe a 57-year-old male with human immunodeficiency virus who presented to us with chronic diarrhea. He had no history of allergies and had significant weight loss, normal systemic examination, and a complete blood count showing no eosinophilia. After an esophagogastroduodenoscopy, the diagnosis of EGE was made by histopathological findings. The symptoms started improving with the initiation of treatment with oral prednisolone.

Hematemesis as Initial Presentation in a 10-Week-Old Infant with Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare condition characterized by eosinophilic inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract resulting in a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms. There is currently a dearth of information on this topic in the pediatric literature, as very few cases have been reported. In this report, we present a case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis in a 10-week-old patient with initial presenting symptom of hematemesis. To our knowledge, this is the youngest case reported in the literature and is unique in its initial presentation.

Abdominal Pain and Ascites: Not Always Related to Portal Hypertension

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract with an estimated prevalence of one in 100,000. The typical presentation consists of vague gastrointestinal symptoms with the mucosal involvement of the digestive system. Rarely, it presents as eosinophilic ascites. We report the case of a 22-year-old female who presented with acute onset abdominal pain and ascites. The laboratory studies were remarkable for eosinophilia and the ascitic fluid demonstrated high eosinophilic counts. Push enteroscopy with biopsy supported the diagnosis of eosinophilic gastroenteritis, with likely serosal involvement. Other differential diagnoses were excluded. A prednisone taper along with dietary treatment was initiated. We report complete resolution of symptoms two weeks following the initiation of therapy. Nine months later, she remains asymptomatic without recurrence of ascites.
