Abstract
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has become a major cause of liver transplantation and liver-associated death. Targeting the gut-liver axis is a potential therapy for NASH. The Fufang Zhenzhu Tiaozhi (FTZ) capsule, a traditional Chinese medicine commonly used in clinical practice, has recently emerged as a promising drug candidate for metabolic diseases such as NASH. The present study aimed to investigate whether FTZ exerts an anti-NASH effect by targeting the gut-liver axis. Mice were fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) for 20 weeks to induce NASH. HFD-fed mice were daily intragastrically administrated with FTZ at 10 weeks after tbe initiation of HFD feeding. The mRNA levels of genes associated with the intestinal tight junction, lipid metabolism, and inflammation were determined by the q-PCR assay. Hepatic pathology was evaluated by H&E staining. The gut microbiota was analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. FTZ attenuated HFD-induced obesity, insulin resistance, and hepatic steatosis in mice. FTZ treatment decreased the elevated levels of serum aminotransferases and liver triglyceride in NASH mice. Furthermore, FTZ treatment reduced hepatic inflammatory cell infiltration and fibrosis in mice. In addition, FTZ attenuated the intestinal inflammatory response and improved intestinal barrier function. Mechanistically, FTZ-treated mice showed a different gut microbiota composition compared with that in HFD-fed mice. Finally, we identified eight differential metabolites that may contribute to the improvement of NASH with FTZ treatment. In summary, FTZ ameliorates NASH by inhibiting gut inflammation, improving intestinal barrier function, and modulating intestinal microbiota composition.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds with antioxidant properties have risen in interest due to their benefits for human health. Fragaria chiloensis is a native wild berry species from Chile that develops a white/pink receptacle and white flesh at the ripe stage. Changes in color parameters, anthocyanins, secondary metabolites (phenolics, flavonoids), and total antioxidant capacity were followed during the development and ripening of F. chiloensis fruit. The increment in color ‘a’ index takes place in parallel with anthocyanins rise and the reduction in phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity. Good correlations were determined between color development, anthocyanins, and the expression of key phenylpropanoid/flavonoid and anthocyanin pathway genes. To investigate the role of ABA on color development, detached immature fruit (C2 stage) were treated with exogenous ABA and stored at 20 °C. Fruit color development was accelerated by ABA treatment compared to non-treated fruit, and consistent with that, the increment in the accumulation of anthocyanins and transcripts of phenylpropanoid/flavonoid, and anthocyanin pathways genes such as FcPAL, FcCHS, and FcANS were observed. This suggests that ABA promotes transcriptional changes that lead to the color formation on this non-climacteric fruit.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays several physiological roles in plants. Despite the evidence, the role of H2S on cell wall disassembly and its implications on fleshy fruit firmness remains unknown. In this work, the effect of H2S treatment on the shelf-life, cell wall polymers and cell wall modifying-related gene expression of Chilean strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis) fruit was tested during postharvest storage. The treatment with H2S prolonged the shelf-life of fruit by an effect of optimal dose. Fruit treated with 0.2 mM H2S maintained significantly higher fruit firmness than non-treated fruit, reducing its decay and tripling its shelf-life. Additionally, H2S treatment delays pectin degradation throughout the storage period and significantly downregulated the expression of genes encoding for pectinases, such as polygalacturonase, pectate lyase, and expansin. This evidence suggests that H2S as a gasotransmitter prolongs the post-harvest shelf-life of the fruit and prevents its fast softening rate by a downregulation of the expression of key pectinase genes, which leads to a decreased pectin degradation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is an endotoxin that leads to inflammation in many organs, including liver. It binds to pattern recognition receptors, that generally recognise pathogen expressed molecules to transduce signals that result in a multifaceted network of intracellular responses ending up in inflammation. Aim In this study, we used lauric acid (LA), a constituent abundantly found in coconut oil to determine its anti-inflammatory role in LPS-induced liver inflammation in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. METHOD Male SD rats were divided into five groups (n = 8), injected with LPS and thereafter treated with LA (50 and 100 mg/kg) or vehicle orally for 14 days. After fourteen days of LA treatment, all the groups were humanely killed to investigate biochemical parameters followed by pro-inflammatory cytokine markers; tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and IL-1β. Moreover, liver tissues were harvested for histopathological studies and evaluation of targeted protein expression with western blot and localisation through immunohistochemistry (IHC). RESULTS The study results showed that treatment of LA 50 and 100 mg/kg for 14 days were able to reduce the elevated level of pro-inflammatory cytokines, liver inflammation, and downregulated the expression of TLR4/NF-κB mediating proteins in liver tissues. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that treatment of LA has a protective role against LPS-induced liver inflammation in rats, thus, warrants further in-depth investigation through mechanistic approaches in different study models.

Abstract
The strawberries represent in our days one of the main fresh fruits consumed globally, inevitably leading to large amounts of by-products and wastes. Usually appreciated because of their specific flavor, the strawberries also possess biological properties, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, or anti-inflammatory effects. In spite of the wide spread of the Fragaria genus, few species represent the subject of the last decade scientific research. The main components identified in the Fragaria species are presented, as well as several biological properties, as emerging from the scientific papers published in the last decade.

Abstract
Two interesting plants within the Chilean flora (wild and crop species) can be found with a history related to modern fruticulture: Fragaria chiloensis subsp. chiloensis (Rosaceae) and Vasconcellea pubescens (Caricaceae). Both species have a wide natural distribution, which goes from the Andes mountains to the sea (East-West), and from the Atacama desert to the South of Chile (North-South). The growing locations are included within the Chilean Winter Rainfall-Valdivian Forest hotspot. Global warming is of great concern as it increases the risk of losing wild plant species, but at the same time, gives a chance for usually longer term genetic improvement using naturally adapted material and the source for generating healthy foods. Modern agriculture intensifies the attractiveness of native undomesticated species as a way to provide compounds like antioxidants or tolerant plants for climate change scenario. F. chiloensis subsp. chiloensis as the mother of commercial strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) is an interesting genetic source for the improvement of fruit flavor and stress tolerance. On the other hand, V. pubescens produces fruit with high level of antioxidants and proteolytic enzymes of interest to the food industry. The current review compiles the botanical, physiological and phytochemical description of F. chiloensis subsp. chiloensis and V. pubescens, highlighting their potential as functional foods and as source of compounds with several applications in the pharmaceutical, biotechnological, and food science. The impact of global warming scenario on the distribution of the species is also discussed.

Abstract
Since an intake of fruits and vegetables displays important effects on the incidence of several chronic and non-infectious diseases in humans, consumers' attention worldwide is focused on identification of functional foods. In this sense, Fragaria chiloensis ssp. chiloensis f. chiloensis fruit has recently emerged as a preferred berry because of its outstanding aroma and exotic white-pink color and high phenolic content. Emerging research provides substantial evidence by which to classify Chilean strawberries as a functional food with several preventive and therapeutic health benefits. Information on the features of the fruit (e.g., quality, physiology, high resistance to pathogens, and sensory attributes) is also scarce. Only a small number of studies provide useful data on handling and storage of the Chilean strawberry; hence, there is no adequate, normalized postharvest strategy for storing and/or producing this species. The objective of this review is to provide and discuss the available literature with an emphasis on physiology aspects and to present 1) fruit physiology and quality, 2) handling and physiological disorders of Chilean strawberry, 3) nutritional content and health properties for consumers, and 4) a highlight of challenges for future research. Again, we discuss the available literature focused on last five-years old with an emphasis on the important postharvest physiology aspects and the molecular mechanisms underlying the quality traits of this exotic strawberry fruit.

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge on antioxidant capability (superoxide dismutase, SOD; catalase, CAT; glutathione peroxidase, GPX; and reduced glutathione to oxidized glutathione, GSH/GSSG) and induce the model of immunological stress in broiler chickens. Day-old, yellowfeathered broilers (140) were randomly assigned to 2 treatments with 7 replicates of 10 chicks each. At day 21, 23, 25 and 27, chicks were injected with LPS and blood samples were collected after 24 h. Chicks (2) from each replicate were killed, and liver and jejunum samples were collected. The activities and gene expression of SOD, CAT, and GPX, were determined. The results showed that LPS challenge reduced serum SOD at day 22 and 26, serum CAT at day 24, 26, and 28, and serum GPX at day 26. LPS challenge decreased liver SOD, liver GPX, liver GSH/GSSG ratio at day 26 and 28. LPS challenge also decreased jejunum SOD at day 26, and jejunum CAT, GPX and GSH/GSSG ratio at day 26 and 28.The expressions of liver CAT, liver GPX1, and jejunum SOD1 were down regulated at day 26. The expressions of jejunum CAT, and jejunum GPX1 were down regulated at day 26. Meanwhile, LPS reduced the expression of liver SOD1 at day 22 and the expression of jejunum GPX1 at day 28. In conclusion, three times of LPS challenge could result in serious oxidative damage and induce immune stress model.

Abstract
Aims: Emodin is an anthraquinone with potential anti-inflammatory properties. However, the possible molecular mechanisms and protective effects of emodin are not clear. The objective of this study was to investigate the possible molecular mechanisms and protective effects of emodin on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute liver injury (ALI) via the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathway in the Raw264.7 cell line and in Balb/c mice. Methods: This study established an inflammatory cellular model and induced an ALI animal model. TLR4 was overexpressed by lentivirus and downregulated by small interfering RNA (siRNA) technology. The mRNA and protein levels of TLR4 and downstream molecules were detected in cells and liver tissue. The tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin (IL)-6 levels in supernatant and serum were determined by ELISA. The distribution and expression of mannose receptor C type 1 (CD206) and arginase 1 (ARG1) in the liver were tested by immunofluorescence. Mouse liver function and histopathological observations were assessed. Results: Administration of emodin reduced the protein and/or mRNA levels of TLR4 and its downstream molecules following LPS challenge in Raw264.7 cells and in an animal model. Additionally, emodin suppressed the expression of TNF-α and IL-6 in cell culture supernatant and serum. The inhibitory effect of emodin was also confirmed in RAW264.7 cells, in which TLR4 was overexpressed or knocked down. Additionally, ARG1 and CD206 were elevated in the emodin groups. Emodin also decreased serum ALT and AST levels and alleviated the liver histopathological damage induced by LPS. Conclusion: Emodin showed excellent hepatoprotective effects against LPS-induced ALI, possibly by inhibiting TLR4 signaling pathways.

Abstract
Background Berries and associated bioactive compounds, e.g. polyphenols and dietary fibre (DF), may have beneficial implications with respect to the metabolic syndrome, including also cognitive functions. The aim of this study was to evaluate effects on cognitive functions and cardiometabolic risk markers of 5 wk intervention with a mixture of berries, in healthy humans. Methods Forty healthy subjects between 50–70 years old were provided a berry beverage based on a mixture of berries (150g blueberries, 50g blackcurrant, 50g elderberry, 50g lingonberries, 50g strawberry, and 100g tomatoes) or a control beverage, daily during 5 weeks in a randomized crossover design. The control beverage (water based) was matched with respect to monosaccharides, pH, and volume. Cognitive tests included tests of working memory capacity, selective attention, and psychomotor reaction time. Cardiometabolic test variables investigated were blood pressure, fasting blood concentrations of glucose, insulin, blood lipids, inflammatory markers, and markers of oxidative stress. Results The daily amounts of total polyphenols and DF from the berry beverage were 795 mg and 11g, respectively. There were no polyphenols or DF in the control beverage. The berry intervention reduced total- and LDL cholesterol compared to baseline (both P<0.05), and in comparison to the control beverage (P<0.005 and P<0.01, respectively). The control beverage increased glucose concentrations (P<0.01) and tended to increase insulin concentrations (P = 0.064) from base line, and increased insulin concentrations in comparison to the berry beverage (P<0.05). Subjects performed better in the working memory test after the berry beverage compared to after the control beverage (P<0.05). No significant effects on the other test variables were observed. Conclusions The improvements in cardiometabolic risk markers and cognitive performance after the berry beverage suggest preventive potential of berries with respect to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and associated cognitive decline. Possibly the polyphenols and DF contributed to the beneficial effects. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01562392.
