Coupling of photocatalysis and biological treatment for elemental chlorine free bleaching wastewater: Application of factorial design methodology

In this study, the visible-light-induced intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) technology was fabricated using the TiO₂/bagasse cellulose composite as the carrier and Phanerochaete mixed activated sludge as the biological source. The ICPB degradation effect of elemental chlorine free (ECF) bleaching wastewater was evaluated via the response surface design. Then, the wastewater was characterized, including absorbable organic halogen (AOX), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), chemical oxygen demand (COD), chroma, pH, suspended solids, and the organic compound changes in wastewater were analyzed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Under the optimal conditions of pH 7, carrier filling rate of 5%, aeration rate of 2 L/min, and reaction time of 7 h, the degradation efficiencies of AOX, COD, and DOC were 95%, 91%, and 82%, respectively. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results of the ICPB carrier after the reaction were almost identical to those before the reaction. The biomass and its activity on the ICPB system were analyzed by the dominant bacteria during degradation (Curaneotrichosporon, Paenibacillus, Cellulonas, Phanerochaete, Dechlorobacter, Rhodotorula, Sphingobacterium, and Ruminiclostridium), which had a good degradation effect on wastewater. This study affords a novel method for the degradation of ECF bleaching wastewater and a new idea for ICPB technology optimization.

Valorization of orange bagasse through one-step physical and chemical combined processes to obtain a cellulose-rich material

BACKGROUND

Orange bagasse (OB) is an agroindustrial residue of great economic importance that has been little explored for the extraction of cellulose. The present study aimed to investigate different combinations of chemical (sodium hydroxide, peracetic acid and alkaline peroxide) and physical (autoclaving and ultrasonication) treatments performed in one-step processes for cellulose extraction from OB and to characterize the materials obtained according to their composition, morphology, crystallinity and thermal stability.

RESULTS

The processing yields ranged from 140 to 820 g kg^-1 , with a recovery of 720-1000 g kg^-1 of the original cellulose. Treatments promoted morphological changes in the fiber structure, resulting in materials with higher porosity, indicating partial removal of the noncellulosic fractions. The use of combined chemical treatments (NaOH and peracetic acid) with autoclaving was more efficient for obtaining samples with the highest cellulose contents.

CONCLUSION

Therefore, AC_SH (processed by autoclaving with NaOH) was the most effective one-step treatment, resulting in 71.1% cellulose, 0% hemicellulose and 19.0% lignin, with a crystallinity index of 42%. The one-step treatments were able to obtain materials with higher cellulose contents and yields, reducing reaction times and the quantity of chemical reagents employed in the overall processes compared to multistep conventional processes. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Isolation and characterization of lignin-degrading bacterium Bacillus aryabhattai from pulp and paper mill wastewater and evaluation of its lignin-degrading potential

This study reports the degradation and decolourization capability of a manganese peroxidase enzyme producing bacterium isolated from pulp and paper mill wastewater. The isolate was identified as Bacillus aryabhattai based on biochemical analysis and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The strain was designated MG966493. This bacterium was able to reduce 67% and 54% colour and lignin, respectively, from the pulp and paper mill wastewater after 144 h of treatment at 32 °C, pH 7.6 and 120 rpm. Further, FT-IR analysis showed that during the lignin degradation process a number of metabolites were produced comprising different functional groups such as carbonyl (C=C), carboxyl (-COOH), alkene (C=C), amines (-NH₂), sulphonic (-SO₃) and nitro (-NO₂). In addition, the SEM analysis showed that the bacterial cells exposed to pulp and paper mill wastewater have rough surfaces with reduced size as compared to the unexposed cells with smooth surfaces. This study concluded that the isolated bacterium B. aryabhattai has significant potential for the bioremediation of pulp and paper mill wastewater and thus, can be applied for their treatment at an industrial scale.
