Abstract
BACKGROUND This study explores the intricate relationship between Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), the Triglyceride-Glucose (TyG) index, and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) in a U.S. adult population. It focuses on understanding how the TyG index, as a marker of insulin resistance, relates to cardiovascular risk in the presence of CKD. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning from 1999 to 2018. The study involved classifying stages of CKD, calculating the TyG index, and applying statistical analyses including logistic regression. RESULTS The investigation revealed that individuals with CKD, who comprised 49% males with an average age of 47 years, exhibited a higher incidence of CVD. The study demonstrated that before adjusting for the TyG index, the odds ratio (OR) for the association between CKD and CVD was 1.77. Importantly, the TyG index was found to mediate 10% of the association between CKD and CVD. Moreover, a significant synergistic interaction was observed between a high TyG index and CKD, with the combined presence of these conditions increasing the risk ratio for CVD to 3.01. CONCLUSION The findings highlight the crucial role of insulin resistance in the link between CKD and CVD. The paper discusses the implications of chronic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction in CKD patients and the importance of the TyG index in assessing cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
Importance The clinical implications of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) measurements in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) in the emergency department (ED) are largely unknown. Objectives To investigate associations between serum creatinine (SCr) concentrations and hs-cTnT kinetics, as well as the clinical accuracy of hs-cTnT for myocardial infarction (MI) in patients with AKI. Design, Setting, and Participants This retrospective cohort study included 15 111 patient visits to 7 EDs in Sweden from December 9, 2010, to August 31, 2017, by patients 18 years or older fulfilling AKI criteria with 2 or more SCr measurements and 1 or more hs-cTnT measurement. Statistical analysis was performed from October 2, 2022, to September 28, 2023. Exposure Dynamic change in SCr during the ED visits. Main Outcomes and Measures Linear mixed-effects models were used to estimate the log-linear regression of kinetic change in hs-cTnT. Logistic regression models were applied to calculate odds ratios (ORs) for change in hs-cTnT indicating acute myocardial injury (Δhs-cTnT >20% and elevated hs-cTnT >14 ng/L) in association with change in SCr, and to assess the diagnostic performance of hs-cTnT for MI in patients with chest pain. Results There was a total of 15 211 visits by 13 638 patients (median age, 74 years [IQR, 64-83 years]; 8709 men [57%]), of whom 1174 (8%) had an MI. Overall, 11 353 of patients at 14 037 visits without an MI diagnosis (81%) had myocardial injury, and 4396 patients at 14 037 visits (31%) had acute myocardial injury. The change in hs-cTnT among patients without MI was 1.8-fold higher in the highest vs the lowest change in SCr quartile (64.7% [95% CI, 58.4%-71.5%] vs 36.3% [95% CI, 32.4%-40.7%]; exponentiated β coefficient, 1.78 [95% CI, 1.62-1.96]). Patients in the former group were twice as likely to have acute myocardial injury (39% [1378 of 3516 visits] vs 23% [817 of 3507 visits]; adjusted OR, 2.32 [95% CI, 2.08-2.59]). Using a 0 hours hs-cTnT cutoff value of 52 ng/L or higher assigned 627 of 2388 patients (26%) with chest pain to a high-risk group in whom the specificity and positive predictive value for MI was low (78.5% [95% CI, 76.7%-80.2&] and 27.6% [95% CI, 24.1%-31.3%], respectively). Conclusions and Relevance This cohort study of patients in the ED suggests that dynamic change in SCr among patients with AKI was associated with hs-cTnT concentrations indicative of acute myocardial injury. These observations were accompanied by poor performance of recommended hs-cTnT-based algorithms for MI risk stratification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS High serum galectin-3 has been associated with adverse outcomes among dialysis patients, although its prognostic role remains unclear among individuals with earlier-stage chronic kidney disease. The present systematic review aims to evaluate the association of serum galectin-3 with survival, cardiovascular disease and kidney disease progression among non-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients. METHODS PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CENTRAL and Google Scholar were systematically searched till November 10, 2023. All observational studies assessing the prognostic role of serum galectin-3 in patients with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease were included. RESULTS Overall, 12 studies (10 cohort, 2 cross-sectional) were included, comprising 9,349 patients. The endpoint of survival was assessed in 5 studies, indicating a significant association between increasing serum galectin-3 levels and higher all-cause mortality risk (Hazard ratio per unit: 1.22, 95 % confidence intervals-CI: 1.05-1.41, ≥6 ng/mL: 2.66, 95 % CI: 1.68-4.23). Current evidence coming from 4 studies was inconclusive regarding the potential link of galectin-3 and kidney function decline, yielding conflicting results. No significant associations between serum galectin-3 and heart failure, cardiovascular events or death were consistently reported. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review supports the prognostic role of galectin-3 in chronic kidney disease, as its increased serum values may be associated with higher all-cause mortality risk. No clear role could be supported for serum galectin-3 regarding the prediction of cardiovascular disease or kidney disease progression.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and it is responsible for approximately half of all CKD-related deaths. CVDs are the primary cause of death in hemodialysis patients due to major adverse cardiovascular events. Therefore, better approaches for differentiating chronic hemodialysis patients at higher cardiovascular risk will help physicians improve clinical outcomes. Hence, there is an urgent need to discover feasible and reliable cardiac biomarkers to improve diagnostic accuracy, reflect myocardial injury, and identify high-risk patients. Numerous biomarkers that have significant prognostic value with respect to adverse CVD outcomes in the setting of mild to severe CKD have been identified. Therefore, a better understanding of the positive clinical impact of cardiac biomarkers on CVD patient outcomes is an important step toward prevention and improving treatment in the future. In this review, we address the relationship between cardiovascular biomarkers and CKD treatment strategies to elucidate the underlying importance of these biomarkers to patient outcomes.

Abstract
Background. This work is a review of preclinical and clinical studies of the role of telomeres and telomerase in the development and progression of coronary heart disease (CHD). Materials and methods. A search for full-text publications (articles, reviews, meta-analyses, Cochrane reviews, and clinical cases) in English and Russian was carried out in the databases PubMed, Oxford University Press, Scopus, Web of Science, Springer, and E-library electronic library using keywords and their combinations. The search depth is 11 years (2010–2021). Results. The review suggests that the relative leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is associated with the development of socially significant and widespread cardiovascular diseases such as CHD and essential hypertension. At the same time, the interests of researchers are mainly focused on the study of the relative LTL in CHD. Conclusions. Despite the scientific and clinical significance of the analyzed studies of the relative length of human LTL as a biological marker of cardiovascular diseases, their implementation in real clinical practice is difficult due to differences in the design and methodology of the analyzed studies, as well as differences in the samples by gender, age, race, and ethnicity. The authors believe that clinical studies of the role of the relative length of leukocyte telomeres in adult patients with coronary heart disease are the most promising and require large multicenter studies with a unified design and methodology.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major and serious global health problem that leads to kidney damage as well as multiple systemic diseases. Early diagnosis and treatment are two major measures to prevent further deterioration of kidney function and to delay adverse outcomes. However, the paucity of early, predictive and noninvasive biomarkers has undermined our ability to promptly detect and treat this common clinical condition which affects more than 10% of the population worldwide. Despite all limitations, kidney function is still measured by serum creatinine, cystatin C, and albuminuria, as well as estimating glomerular filtration rate using different equations. This review aims to provide comprehensive insight into diagnostic methods available for early detection of CKD. In the review, we discuss the following topics: (i) markers of glomerular injury; (ii) markers of tubulointerstitial injury; (iii) the role of omics; (iv) the role of microbiota; (v) and finally, the role of microRNA in the early detection of CKD. Despite all novel findings, none of these biomarkers have met the criteria of an ideal early marker. Since the central role in CKD progression is the proximal tubule (PT), most data from the literature have analyzed biomarkers of PT injury, such as KIM-1 (kidney injury molecule-1), NGAL (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin), and L-FABP (liver fatty acid-binding protein).

Abstract
Hyperphosphatemia is present in most patients with end‐stage renal disease (ESRD) and has been associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. Phosphate binders (calcium‐based and calcium free) are the mainstay pharmacologic treatment to lower phosphorus levels in patients with ESRD. We evaluated biochemical markers of vascular calcification, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) treated with sevelamer carbonate (SC) versus calcium acetate (CA). Fifty patients with CKD (stages 3 and 4) were enrolled and assigned to treatment with SC and CA for 12 weeks. At the end of the study the biomarkers of vascular calcification, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction were analyzed. A significant increase in HDL‐cholesterol was observed with SC but not with CA in patients with CKD. Treatment with SC reduced serum phosphate, calcium phosphate, and FGF‐23 levels and there was no change with CA treatment. The inflammatory markers IL‐8, IFN‐γ, and TNFα decreased with response to both treatments. The levels of IL‐6 significantly increased with CA treatment and no change was observed in the SC treatment group. SC showed favorable effects on anti‐inflammatory and vascular calcification biomarkers compared to CA treatment in patients with CKD stages 3 and 4 with normal phosphorous values.

Abstract
Background: Cardiovascular complications are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality at any stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Moreover, the high rate of cardiovascular mortality observed in these patients is associated with an accelerated atherosclerosis process that likely starts at the early stages of CKD. Thus, traditional and non-traditional or uremic-related factors represent a link between CKD and cardiovascular risk. Among non-conventional risk factors, particular focus has been placed on anaemia, mineral and bone disorders, inflammation, malnutrition and oxidative stress and, in this regard, connections have been reported between oxidative stress and cardiovascular disease in dialysis patients. Methods: We evaluated the oxidation process in different molecular lines (proteins, lipids and genetic material) in 155 non-dialysis patients at different stages of CKD and 45 healthy controls. To assess oxidative stress status, we analyzed oxidized glutathione (GSSG), reduced glutathione (GSH) and the oxidized/reduced glutathione ratio (GSSG/GSH) and other oxidation indicators, including malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-oxo-2’-deoxyguanosine (8-oxo-dG). Results: An active grade of oxidative stress was found from the early stages of CKD onwards, which affected all of the molecular lines studied. We observed a heightened oxidative state (indicated by a higher level of oxidized molecules together with decreased levels of antioxidant molecules) as kidney function declined. Furthermore, oxidative stress-related alterations were significantly greater in CKD patients than in the control group. Conclusions: CKD patients exhibit significantly higher oxidative stress than healthy individuals, and these alterations intensify as eGFR declines, showing significant differences between CKD stages. Thus, future research is warranted to provide clearer results in this area.

Abstract
There is a growing interest in the potential role of adipose tissues in cardiac and renal pathophysiology, and determining the mechanisms by which fat compartments around the heart and kidneys influence cardiovascular disease is of clinical importance in both general and high-risk populations. Epicardial fat and perirenal fat have been associated with adverse outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Epicardial fat is a rich source of free fatty acids and is capable of secreting inflammatory and pro-atherogenic cytokines that promote atherosclerosis through a local paracrine effect. Recent evidence has demonstrated that perirenal fat has a closer correlation with kidney diseases than other visceral fat deposits in obesity or metabolic disturbances. Moreover, perirenal fat has been reported as an independent risk factor for CKD progression and even associated with cardiorenal dysfunction. Accordingly, these forms of organ-specific fat deposits may act as a connecter between vascular and cardiorenal disease. This review explores the possible links between epicardial and perirenal fat and its significant role as a modulator of cardiorenal dysfunction in CKD patients.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the associations between high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and renal impairment (RI) among middle-aged and elderly people. We collected and analyzed demographic, anthropometric, metabolic, and renal function data in a community-based population in Northern Taiwan. We excluded subjects with acute inflammation from this study and defined RI as the presence of urinary albumin–creatinine ratio 30–300 mg/g or an estimated glomerular filtration rate of <60 mL/min/1.73 m2. There were 131, 125, and 125 participants in the low (≤0.80 mg/L), middle (0.81–1.76 mg/L), and high (>1.77 mg/L) hs-CRP tertiles, respectively. hs-CRP exhibited significantly positive correlations with body mass index, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, triglyceride, and fasting plasma glucose, and a negative correlation with high-density lipoprotein. The prevalence and odds ratio of RI significantly increased across hs-CRP tertiles from low to high, and this trend remained significant after adjusting for the conventional cardiometabolic risk factors. hs-CRP ≥ 1.61 mg/L in the total group and ≥2.03 mg/L in the elderly group accurately predicted RI (p = 0.01 and 0.03, respectively). These findings suggest that we should carefully evaluate the renal function for at-risk individuals with hs-CRP elevation.

Abstract
Fluid volume and hemodynamic management in hemodialysis patients is an essential component of dialysis adequacy. Restoring salt and water homeostasis in hemodialysis patients has been a permanent quest by nephrologists summarized by the ‘dry weight’ probing approach. Although this clinical approach has been associated with benefits on cardiovascular outcome, it is now challenged by recent studies showing that intensity or aggressiveness to remove fluid during intermittent dialysis is associated with cardiovascular stress and potential organ damage. A more precise approach is required to improve cardiovascular outcome in this high-risk population. Fluid status assessment and monitoring rely on four components: clinical assessment, non-invasive instrumental tools (e.g., US, bioimpedance, blood volume monitoring), cardiac biomarkers (e.g. natriuretic peptides), and algorithm and sodium modeling to estimate mass transfer. Optimal management of fluid and sodium imbalance in dialysis patients consist in adjusting salt and fluid removal by dialysis (ultrafiltration, dialysate sodium) and by restricting salt intake and fluid gain between dialysis sessions. Modern technology using biosensors and feedback control tools embarked on dialysis machine, with sophisticated analytics will provide direct handling of sodium and water in a more precise and personalized way. It is envisaged in the near future that these tools will support physician decision making with high potential of improving cardiovascular outcome.

Abstract
Cardiovascular (CV) disease is highly prevalent in the population with chronic kidney disease (CKD), where the risk of CV death in early stages far exceeds the risk of progression to dialysis. The presence of chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) has shown a strong correlation with CV events and mortality. As a non-atheromatous process, it could be partially explained why standard CV disease-modifying drugs do not provide such an impact on CV mortality in CKD as observed in the general population. We summarize the potential association of CV comorbidities with the older (parathyroid hormone, phosphate) and newer (FGF23, Klotho, sclerostin) CKD-MBD biomarkers.

Abstract
The importance of cardiometabolic factors in the inception and progression of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is increasingly being recognized. Beyond diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome, other factors may be responsible in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) for the high prevalence of cardiovascular disease, which is estimated to be 5- to 20-fold higher than in the general population. Although undefined uremic toxins are often blamed for part of the increased risk, visceral adipose tissue, and in particular epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), have been the focus of intense research in the past two decades. In fact, several lines of evidence suggest their involvement in atherosclerosis development and its complications. EAT may promote atherosclerosis through paracrine and endocrine pathways exerted via the secretion of adipocytokines such as adiponectin and leptin. In this article we review the current knowledge of the impact of EAT on cardiovascular outcomes in the general population and in patients with CKD. Special reference will be made to adiponectin and leptin as possible mediators of the increased cardiovascular risk linked with EAT.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease represents a true inflammatory state, and is related to multiple cardiovascular risk factors. Coronary artery disease is the major complication, and has usually been associated with non-classical or uraemic related factors that include the disturbance of calcium and phosphorus metabolism, among others. Recent clinical evidence shows that specific body fat deposition like epicardial adipose tissue is an additional factor to consider when evaluating cardiovascular risk in the general population and kidney patients. Direct interaction of this tissue and coronary vessels with consequent mediation of pro-atherogenic substances have a local process ending in endothelial damage. Although the population of renal patients has been poorly evaluated, future studies should determine precisely whether an increase in epicardial fat is truly associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in this risk group.

Abstract
Persistent inflammation in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients is known to underlie the progression of chronic kidney disease and to be associated with multiple risk factors including malnutrition, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The acute-phase protein pentraxin 3 (PTX3) has a proven potential as a local inflammatory biomarker, but its clinical utility in ESRD remains unclear. Circulating levels of PTX3 and classical inflammatory mediators, including the clinical prototypical C-reactive protein (CRP), were assessed in 246 ESRD patients on dialysis and analysed in relation to the lipid profile, adipokine levels, and nutritional, cardiac, and renal fibrosis markers. Occurrence of deaths was recorded for the following year. Contrarily to the classical inflammatory markers, PTX3 levels were negatively correlated with nutritional markers and associated with a less atherogenic lipid profile. Levels of the cardiac and renal fibrosis markers and of the oxidized LDL/LDL-C ratio were found to be independent determinants of PTX3 concentration. When comparing inflammatory mediators, the increase in the PTX3 levels was the only predictor of all-cause mortality in dialysis patients in a survival model adjusted to all markers under study, other than the inflammatory ones, besides common confounding factors in dialysis. Data support the clinical applicability of PTX3 as a broader inflammatory biomarker than the classical ones, presenting a close association with inflammation, malnutrition, CVD, and renal fibrosis and a great potential to predict all-cause mortality in dialysis patients. The pleiotropic character of PTX3 may be of clinical relevance, and it could be targeted to ameliorate the high morbidity and mortality associated with ESRD.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular events (CVE), partly due to the higher burden of atherosclerosis. Circulating Osteopontin (OPN) levels have been also shown to have a potential role in the development of atherosclerosis. Indeed, CKD patients show an increase in circulating OPN levels, but their effect of CKD-related atherosclerosis is not clear. Polymorphisms in the OPN gene (SPP1) have been studied in atheromatous disease, but reported results show conflictive findings. Thus, the main aim of the present study is to analyze the influence of SPP1 polymorphisms in CVE in CKD patients, taking into account circulating OPN levels. We followed 559 healthy controls and 2445 CKD patients without previous CVE from the National Observatory of Atherosclerosis in Nephrology study (NEFRONA study). After 48 months of follow-up 206 CVE were recorded. Genotyping for rs9138, rs1126616, rs1126772, rs11730582 and rs28357094 polymorphisms of the SPP1 gene was performed along with the measurements of plasma OPN levels. The group of patients with CVE showed higher incidence of atherosclerotic plaque (90.3% vs 64.5%; p < 0.001) and higher OPN levels (p < 0.001) at baseline. Patients with the heterozygous genotype of the rs1126616 polymorphism showed a higher hazard ratio of having a CVE, even after adjustment for multiple potential confounders. After adjustment, OPN levels were no longer associated with the incidence of CVE. We found that the rs1126616 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the SPP1 gene is independently associated with a higher incidence of CVE in a cohort of CKD patients and that it could be used to predict CVE risk.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a high risk of death mainly due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Early risk identification may allow interventions and prevention of fatal events. OBJECTIVES The study aim was to assess the usefulness of selected CVD biomarkers as predictors of 5-year mortality in patients with different CKD stages. PATIENTS AND METHODS Study included 57 CKD patients: 38 in stage 5 (ESRD), 19 in stage 3 and 4 (CKD3-4), and 19 healthy controls. Blood samples were obtained once to measure fetuin A, adiponectin, leptin, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin-6 (IL-6), metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9), intracellular-1 (ICAM1) and vascular-1 (VCAM1) adhesion molecules (ELISA or Luminex platform). Computed tomography was performed to assess the calcium score (CS). Patients were prospectively followed for 5 years to evaluate their all-cause mortality. RESULTS Serum VCAM1, TNF and IL-6 were significantly higher in more advanced CKD stages. VCAM1 correlated significantly with ICAM1, TNF and IL-6. TNF and IL-6 were also significantly correlated with each other. No significant changes were detected for other markers. IL-6 correlated significantly with CS, age, renal function and CRP. Elevated CS and IL-6 increased over 3 times the 5-year all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risks in patients with CKD or ESRD at baseline. CONCLUSIONS IL-6 and CS were significantly associated with 5-year risk of all-cause mortality in CKD patients. Our study suggests an involvement of chronic inflammation linked to coronary artery calcification that is likely to contribute to the cardiovascular mortality in patients with impaired renal function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The European Society of Cardiology recommends a 0/1-hour algorithm for rapid rule-out and rule-in of non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction using high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) concentrations irrespective of renal function. Because patients with renal dysfunction (RD) frequently present with increased hs-cTn concentrations even in the absence of non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, concern has been raised regarding the performance of the 0/1-hour algorithm in RD. METHODS In a prospective multicenter diagnostic study enrolling unselected patients presenting with suspected non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction to the emergency department, we assessed the diagnostic performance of the European Society of Cardiology 0/1-hour algorithm using hs-cTnT and hs-cTnI in patients with RD, defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2, and compared it to patients with normal renal function. The final diagnosis was centrally adjudicated by 2 independent cardiologists using all available information, including cardiac imaging. Safety was quantified as sensitivity in the rule-out zone, accuracy as the specificity in the rule-in zone, and efficacy as the proportion of the overall cohort assigned to either rule-out or rule-in based on the 0- and 1-hour sample. RESULTS Among 3254 patients, RD was present in 487 patients (15%). The prevalence of non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction was substantially higher in patients with RD compared with patients with normal renal function (31% versus 13%, P<0.001). Using hs-cTnT, patients with RD had comparable sensitivity of rule-out (100.0% [95% confidence interval {CI}, 97.6-100.0] versus 99.2% [95% CI, 97.6-99.8]; P=0.559), lower specificity of rule-in (88.7% [95% CI, 84.8-91.9] versus 96.5% [95% CI, 95.7-97.2]; P<0.001), and lower overall efficacy (51% versus 81%, P<0.001), mainly driven by a much lower percentage of patients eligible for rule-out (18% versus 68%, P<0.001) compared with patients with normal renal function. Using hs-cTnI, patients with RD had comparable sensitivity of rule-out (98.6% [95% CI, 95.0-99.8] versus 98.5% [95% CI, 96.5-99.5]; P=1.0), lower specificity of rule-in (84.4% [95% CI, 79.9-88.3] versus 91.7% [95% CI, 90.5-92.9]; P<0.001), and lower overall efficacy (54% versus 76%, P<0.001; proportion ruled out, 18% versus 58%, P<0.001) compared with patients with normal renal function. CONCLUSIONS In patients with RD, the safety of the European Society of Cardiology 0/1-hour algorithm is high, but specificity of rule-in and overall efficacy are decreased. Abstract
The colon ascendens stent peritonitis (CASP) surgery induces a leakage of gut contents, causing polymicrobial sepsis related to post-operative multiple organ failure and death in surgical patient. To evaluate the effects of CASP on multiple organs, we analyzed the systemic metabolic consequences in liver, kidney, lung, and heart of rats after CASP by employing a combination of metabolomics, clinical chemistry, and biological assays. We found that CASP surgery after 18 h resulted in striking elevations of lipid, amino acids, acetate, choline, PC, and GPC in rat liver together with significant depletion of glucose and glycogen. Marked elevations of organic acids including lactate, acetate, and creatine and amino acids accompanied by decline of glucose, betaine, TMAO, choline metabolites (PC and GPC) nucleotides, and a range of organic osmolytes such as myo-inositol are observed in the kidney of 18 h post-operative rat. Furthermore, 18 h post-operative rats exhibited accumulations of lipid, amino acids, and depletions of taurine, myo-inositol, choline, PC, and GPC and some nucleotides including uridine, inosine, and adenosine in the lung. In addition, significant elevations of some amino acids, uracil, betaine, and choline metabolites, together with depletion of inosine-5'-monophosphate, were only observed in the heart of 18 h post-operative rats. These results provide new insights into pathological consequences of CASP surgery, which are important for timely prognosis of sepsis.

Abstract
Cardiovascular calcification (CVC) is a progressive complication of chronic kidney disease and a predictor of CV events and mortality. The use of biomarkers to predict CV risk and activities of potential or current treatment drugs in these patients could have a crucial impact on therapeutic approaches. Our aim was to develop a novel assay for measurement of the rate of calcium phosphate crystallization in human plasma and provide a tool to evaluate the effects of crystallization inhibitors. The efficacy of inhibitors was determined by adding inhibitory compounds (polyphosphates, fetuin-A, sodium thiosulfate or citrate) to control samples. The assay was additionally validated for SNF472, an experimental formulation of phytate being developed for the treatment of calciphylaxis and CVC in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis (HD). The method was repeatable and reproducible. The plasma crystallization rate was reduced up to 80% in a concentration-dependent manner following treatment with inhibitors in vitro, among which SNF472 was the most potent. This method appears beneficial in evaluating and discriminating between inhibitory activities of compounds such as polyphosphates on calcium phosphate crystallization, which present a novel therapeutic approach to treat CVC in ESRD patients.
