Long-term investigation of minimally invasive alcohol-based therapy as the treatment of odontogenic keratocyst:A retrospective cohort study

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of alcohol-based therapy for patients with large odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs). The study was implemented as a retrospective, single-center study. Patients treated with ethanol-based therapy for odontogenic keratocyst were retrospectively evaluated for baseline and postoperative data. The pre- and postoperative clinical situation and the extent of radiographic shrinkage were compared. The event is defined as the achievement of >50% reduction in cyst volume. The cyst reduction rate calculated on panoramic radiographs ranged from 7.4% to 99.9% (mean [standard deviation] 55.3% [27.9%]) and was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Specifically, it has been found that, radiographically, 47.6% of patients achieved >50% reduction in cyst volume within 12 months. The continuous cortical bone was rebuilt, and the cyst cavity was filled with regenerated trabecular bone. The 22 included patients presented with nonclinical problems, had no need for further intervention, and exhibited persistent impaction of the teeth. The results of this study demonstrated that ethanol-based therapy triggered marked radiographic reductions of large OKC, indicating that using this technique is efficient.

Peripheral odontogenic keratocyst. A Case report

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are benign cysts arising from the dental lamina and its remnants. They are most commonly located in the posterior body and the ramus of the mandible. The diagnosis of peripheral OKCs (other than intraosseous) are extremely rare and the current literature is limited. The most common location is the gingiva, but mucosal, epidermal, and even intramuscular sites have also been described. Currently 15 cases have been described. The origin and nature of peripheral OKC still remains controversial. The differential diagnosis includes gingival cyst, mucoceles and epidermoid cyst. Soft tissue OKCs have a lower rate of recurrences; 12,5% vs. 62% in intraosseus OKCs. We report a case of a 58-year-old woman with a peripheral OKC, located in the left masticatory space. Peripheral odontogenic keratocysts in buccal soft tissues: two cases report

Peripheral odontogenic keratocysts are rarely observed, and cases of odontogenic keratocysts of buccal soft tissues are even rarer. This study was performed to present two rare cases of odontogenic keratocysts in buccal soft tissues and review related literature.

Mucosal keratocyst of buccal mucosa: A rare entity

The odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a developmental odontogenic cyst that is important due to its specific histopathologic features and clinical behavior. It is well known that the OKC arises from cell rests of the dental lamina. This cyst is important as it shows a different growth mechanism and biologic behavior from other common odontogenic cysts. In rare cases, OKCs occur in sites other than intraosseous sites. The most common location of peripheral OKC is the gingiva, but mucosal, epidermal and even intramuscular sites have also been described. The origin of peripheral OKCs is still under controversy. We, hereby, add a case of peripheral OKC located in the soft tissue of the buccal mucosa to the scarce literature consisting of only a few case reports and small case series of peripheral odontogenic cysts.

Peripheral odontogenic keratocyst: Report of two new cases and review of the literature

Peripheral odontogenic keratocyst (POKC) is a rare soft tissue entity showing the same histological characteristics of odontogenic keratocyst. Herein, we report two cases of POKC affecting the gingiva/alveolar mucosa. Case 1. A 43-year-old female was referred for evaluation of a painless well-defined nodular, sessile, non-tender swelling in the right maxillary buccal gingiva. No radiological alterations were observed. The patient was submitted to excisional biopsy and histological diagnosis was POKC. There were no signs of local recurrence after a 4-year follow-up. Case 2. A 63-year-old female was referred for evaluation of a painless well-defined nodular, sessile, yellowish swelling in the anterior mandibular alveolar mucosa. No radiological alterations were observed. The patient was submitted to excisional biopsy and histological diagnosis was POKC. Patient recovery was uneventful but she did not return for follow-up. POKC should be considered in the differential diagnosis of gingival cystic swellings and can be managed through conservative surgery.

Odontogenic keratocysts located in the buccal mucosa: A description of two cases and review of the literature

Odontogenic keratocysts make up 4%-12% of all odontogenic cysts. Most cysts are sporadic but sometimes they arise in the context of basal cell nevus syndrome (Gorlin syndrome). Most odontogenic keratocysts arise in the posterior region of the mandible, but they can occur anywhere in the jaw. In rare instances, they are located peripherally in the gingiva. Even more rare, they are found in the soft tissues of the mouth. There have been a few case reports and small case series of such peripheral odontogenic keratocysts. Some controversy exists as to whether these truly represent a peripheral counterpart of the intraosseous odontogenic keratocysts and if their origin is at all odontogenic. We hereby present two cases of peripheral odontogenic keratocysts, both being located in the soft tissue of the buccal mucosa, and review the literature on peripheral odontogenic keratocysts.

Odontogenic keratocyst with granular cell changes: A distinctive finding

Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) originates from the dental lamina and is more commonly seen in the posterior mandible than in the maxilla. OKC is the most aggressive cyst of the oral cavity and is known for its rapid growth and its tendency to invade bone of the adjacent tissues. The recurrence rate of OKC is very high due to various reasons debated upon. Cases of OKC have shown the presence of calcifications, dentinoid formation and ossification. Here, we report the first case of OKC in a 27-year-old male showing granular cell changes.
