Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS To simultaneously evaluate iris area (IA) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in eyes with Fuchs Uveitis Syndrome (FUS). METHODS We prospectively recruited a case series of patients with FUS at our institution, simultaneously measuring IA with anterior segment spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and SFCT with enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT). Iris images were analyzed by ImageJ software. We tested the differences in intereye IA and SFCT with the healthy eye (HE) using the Wilcoxon test, and clinical interpretation was controlled by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) between two masked specialists. RESULTS Sixteen patients with unilateral FUS were included. Six were female, and the age range was 37 to 67 (median age 48 years, IQR 41-60). ICC of 98.9%, with a lower confidence interval of 97%. Eyes with FUS had a significant thinning of the total iris median area (p < 0.002), restricted to the temporal and nasal areas compared to the HE (p < 0.01 and < 0.001, respectively). SFCT was also significantly thinner compared to the HE (p < 0.0001). A low correlation was found between iris and choroidal thinning in FUS eyes (rs = 0.21; p = 0.4). CONCLUSIONS This study found reduced iris area and subfoveal choroidal thickness in eyes with FUS compared to the normal fellow eye.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the choroidal vascularity alterations of macula and peripapillary area in eyes with unilateral Fuchs uveitis (FU). METHODS This study included 18 eyes with unilateral FU and 18 healthy fellow eyes. The choroidal vascularity index (CVI) was analyzed, and the results were compared between eyes with FU and healthy fellow eyes (control group). RESULTS The mean subfoveal (s)CVI (%) value was significantly lower in the FU group as compared with the control group: 60.92 ± 2.63 vs. 64.01 ± 2.54, respectively (p = .001). The mean pCVI (%) values of superior and inferior quadrant were significantly lower in the Fuchs group as compared with the control group:58.87 ± 4.48 vs. 61.98 ± 3.32, respectively, in superior quadrant (p = .035); and 57.29 ± 6.65 vs. 61.44 ± 4.76, respectively, in inferior quadrant (p = .014). CONCLUSION The chronic continuous inflammation in FU causes inflammation-mediated thinning in the vascular area of the subfoveal and peripapillary choroid. The changes in the peripapillary region are remarkable in terms of the further glaucoma risk of these eyes.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate macular capillary perfusion in patients with fuchs heterochromic iridocyclitis (FHI) by using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). MATERIAL AND METHOD A total of 19 eyes of 19 patients with unilateral FHI underwent detailed eye examination. OCTA (RTVue-XR Avanti) images were obtained from both eyes. OCTA parameters, including foveal avascular zone, superficial capillary plexus and deep capillary plexus vessel densities, were compared between the involved and fellow control eyes. RESULTS The median age of the patients (11 females, 8 males) was 42.0 ± 9.63 (range 24-57) years. DCP and SCP densities at the parafoveal and perifoveal area were significantly lower in the FHI eyes compared to the control eyes (44.80 ± 5.24% vs. 54.70 ± 3.76% and 43.30 ± 5.10% vs. 53.70 ± 2.73%, respectively; p < 0.05). The median FAZ was 0.29 ± 0.12 (0.11-0.42) mm2 in the FHI eyes and 0.26 ± 0.09 (0.10-0.40) mm2 in the control eyes. This difference did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.199). CONCLUSION Macular capillary perfusion was significantly reduced in both SCP and DCP in the eyes with FHI. FHI, which is known to affect the choroid layer, could also compromise macular capillary perfusion of the retina.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the deficits in contrast sensitivity in patients with Fuchs uveitis syndrome (FUS) and to explore the potential relationship between contrast sensitivity and ocular structure. Methods In this prospective study, 25 patients with FUS and 30 healthy volunteers were recruited. Eyes were divided into three groups: FUS-affected eyes (AE), fellow eyes (FE), and healthy eyes. The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) of all participants was evaluated using the quick CSF (qCSF) method. Fundus photographs were collected for the analysis of refractive media, and vascular density (VD) was assessed using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Data were analyzed and compared using the generalized estimating equation (GEE). Results The CSF of AE was significantly lower than that of FE and controls, while no significant difference was observed between FE and controls. Contrast sensitivity was negatively correlated with the grade of haze. No significant correlation was found between visual function and VDs in FUS eyes. Conclusions We found that the CSF of FUS-affected eyes was significantly reduced, and the visual impairment was predominantly caused by the refractive media turbidity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness (GCIPLT) in the affected eyes to fellow unaffected eyes of patients with unilateral Fuchs' uveitis syndrome (FUS) and analyze their change over time. METHODS Twenty seven unilateral FUS patients who did not have concomitant systemic or ocular disease were retrospectively enrolled. Central macular thickness (CMT), RNFL thickness, and GCIPLT measurements were evaluated. Data was analyzed using the non-parametric Brunner-Langer model (LD-F2 design) and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS The mean age of the patients was 40.2 ± 10.2 years. The median disease duration was 11 (2-62) months. The median best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of the affected eyes and the fellow eyes was 0.22 (0.00-2.50) vs. 0.00 (0.0-0.10) logMAR at the initial visit and 0.05 (0.00-2.50) vs. 0.00 (0.0-0.30) logMAR at the final visit. The change in BCVA was found significant in the affected eyes, but not in the fellow eyes (p < 0.001 and p = 0.287, respectively). The median CMT in the affected eyes at the final visit was not statistically different from the value at the initial visit (255 (157-306) vs. 245 (140-310) µm, p = 0.256). The change in RNFL thickness over time in the affected eyes was similar to the fellow unaffected eyes of the patients with unilateral FUS at all quadrants, with non-significant time and group effects (p > 0.05). However, median GCIPLT in all quadrants (except superonasal) in the affected eyes was statistically lower than the fellow eyes at the initial and final visits (p < 0.05). The most affected quadrant of the ganglion cell complex was inferonasal in the involved eyes (79 (42-97) vs. 75 (43-87) µm) at initial and final visits (p = 0.033 for time effect and p < 0.001 for group effect, respectively). CONCLUSION Median CMT and RNFL thickness did not change during follow-up in the affected eyes of patients with unilateral FUS. Median GCIPLT in the affected eyes declined over time in all quadrants. Ganglion cell loss was also most prominent in the inferonasal quadrant in the affected eyes. FUS patients should be followed up long-term in terms of ganglion cell loss, especially in the inferonasal quadrant.

Abstract
Purpose To analyse the vascular density of the choroid in a keratoconus (KC) population using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Methods Prospective, noninterventional study that analysed 97 eyes from 52 KC patients and 145 eyes from 89 healthy controls. The sample was divided in four different age groups. Inclusion criteria were topographic diagnosis of KC using Pentacam, axial length shorter than 26 mm, good quality of the images, and no other systemic or ocular diseases. A 12 mm horizontal single-line SS-OCT b-scan was performed to create a choroidal thickness (CT) profile. Validated automated segmentation and binarization were used in order to analyse choroidal, stromal, and vascular areas. Results The percentage of choroidal vascularity (vascular area/total area) was 56.6% in KC patients vs. 49.4% in controls. Aged-adjusted choroidal, stromal, and vascular areas and corrected choroidal percentage of vascularity are statistically increased in KC patients when compared with healthy controls (p < 0.001). All these parameters show a decreasing trend with age. Both stromal and vascular areas were thicker in KC patients (p < 0.001). Conclusions Choroidal, stromal, and vascular areas and corrected choroidal percentage of vascularity are statistically increased in KC patients when compared with healthy controls. All these parameters tend to decrease with age.

Analysis of choroidal and central foveal thicknesses in acute anterior uveitis by enhanced-depth imaging optical coherence tomography. BMC Ophthalmol 2017; 17:225. [PMID: 29191218 PMCID: PMC5709927 DOI: 10.1186/s12886-017-0628-7] [Citation(s) in RCA: 14] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/11/2017] [Accepted: 11/22/2017] [Indexed: 11/25/2022] Open
Abstract
Background Currently, there are a limited number of reports of structural changes in the retina and choroid in acute anterior uveitis (AAU). The aim of this study was to evaluate choroidal and central foveal thicknesses during episodes of AAU. Methods The medical records of 120 patients with AAU and 120 healthy subjects matched for age, sex, and spherical equivalent of refractive error were reviewed. Subjects were divided into group 1 (AAU-affected eyes), 2 (unaffected fellow eyes), and 3 (healthy control eyes). Results In the uveitis group, etiologic diagnoses included human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B27-associated (n = 71) and idiopathic (n = 49) AAU. The mean subfoveal choroidal thicknesses (SFCTs) in groups 1–3 were 326.7 ± 64.2, 296.1 ± 66.6, and 294.9 ± 41.7 μm, respectively. The corresponding mean central foveal thicknesses (CFTs) were 273.5 ± 29.3, 264.4 ± 24.6, and 263.0 ± 30.8 μm, respectively. The AAU group exhibited a significantly greater SFCT than the control groups (P < .001). Relative to the control group, while eyes with idiopathic AAU exhibited a significantly greater CFT, those with HLA-B27-associated AAU exhibited no such significant difference. Anterior chamber cell grade was not associated with SFCT or CFT. Conclusions The SFCT increased significantly during AAU. This indicates the importance of OCT examination for detection of subclinical choroidal and retinal changes in all types of AAU.
