Novel Chitosan Derivatives and Their Multifaceted Biological Applications

Chitosan is a rather attractive material, especially because of its bio-origins as well as generation from exoskeletal waste. As the mantle has been effectively transferred from chitin to chitosan, so has it been extrapolated to in-house synthesized novel chitosan derivatives. This review comprehensively lists the available novel chitosan derivatives (ChDs) and summarizes their biological applications. The fact that chitosan derivatives do comprise multifaceted biological applications is attested by the voluminous reports on their varied contributions. However, this review points out to the fact that there has been selective focus on bio functions such as antifungal, antioxidant, antibacterial, whereas other biomedical applications and antiviral applications remain relatively less explored. With their current functionality record, there is definitely no doubt that the plethora of synthesized ChDs will have a profound impact on the unexplored biological aspects. This review points out this lacuna as room for future exploration.

Design of Chitosan Sterilization Agents by a Structure Combination Strategy and Their Potential Application in Crop Protection

Chitosan is the only cationic polysaccharide in nature. It is a type of renewable resource and is abundant. It has good biocompatibility, biodegradability and biological activity. The amino and hydroxyl groups in its molecules can be modified, which enables chitosan to contain a variety of functional groups, giving it a variety of properties. In recent years, researchers have used different strategies to synthesize a variety of chitosan derivatives with novel structure and unique activity. Structure combination is one of the main strategies. Therefore, we will evaluate the synthesis and agricultural antimicrobial applications of the active chitosan derivatives structure combinations, which have not been well-summarized. In addition, the advantages, challenges and developmental prospects of agricultural antimicrobial chitosan derivatives will be discussed.

Investigation of Novel Pesticides with Insecticidal and Antifungal Activities: Design, Synthesis and SAR Studies of Benzoylpyrimidinylurea Derivatives

In order to find pesticides with insecticidal and antifungal activities, a series of novel benzoyl pyrimidinylurea derivatives were designed and synthesized. All target compounds were identified by ¹H-NMR spectroscopy and HRMS. Insecticidal and antifungal activity of these compounds were evaluated and the structure-activity relationships (SAR) were clearly and comprehensively illustrated. Compound 7, with low toxicity to zebrafish (LC50 = 378.387 µg mL-1) showed 100% inhibition against mosquito (Culex pipiens pallens) at 0.25 µg mL-1. Both compounds 19 and 25 exhibited broad-spectrum fungicidal activity (>50% inhibitory activities against 13 phytopathogenic fungi), which were better than those of the commercial pesticide pyrimethanil (>50% inhibitory activities against eight phytopathogenic fungi). Furthermore, compounds 19 and 25 exhibited protective activity against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum on leaves of Brassica oleracea L. during in vivo experiments.

Inhibition of Amphiphilic N-Alkyl-O-carboxymethyl Chitosan Derivatives on Alternaria macrospora

Cotton leaf spot (Alternaria macrospora) is a widespread disease that occurs in the main cotton-producing area of China. In managing this disease, a novel chitosan-based biopesticide, an amphiphilic N-alkyl-O-carboxymethyl chitosan derivative, was prepared. The product was selected from variations of chitosan with different molecular structures, which were obtained via a two-step reaction. First, carboxymethyl chitosans with varying molecular sizes were obtained by etherification with chloroacetic acid; then the carboxymethyl chitosan was alkylated with C4–C12 fatty aldehyde through a Schiff-base reaction. This procedure resulted in derivatives of amphiphilic N-alkyl-O-carboxymethyl chitosan, which showed strong antifungal activities against A. macrospora, and the efficacy was determined by its molecular structure.
