Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) of patients with dentofacial deformity (n = 107) compared with that of healthy individuals (n = 108) from 2019 to 2020. METHODS Oral Health Impact Profile 14 (OHIP-14) and the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) were administered to the individuals before surgery (T1) and 6 months after surgery (T2). RESULTS Preoperative scores (T1) were greater in the surgical group than in the control group in all domains of both surveys (p ≤ 0.001). Postoperative scores (T2) in the surgery group decreased significantly after surgery in all domains in both surveys (p < 0.001). The OHIP-14 scores in the control group at T2 were significantly greater than those in the other domains except for functional limitation at T1. The type of surgery had no effect on quality of life. Class III patients had higher preoperative scores in certain domains. Postoperative physical disability (p = 0.037), physical pain (p = 0.047), and preoperative social disability (p = 0.030) scores of OHIP-14 awareness of dentofacial aesthetics of OQLQ (p = 0.019) were found to be higher in females than in males. CONCLUSIONS The results showed that orthognathic surgery positively affected quality of life. The control group showed differences in T1 and T2 scores, which can be attributed to their psychological status.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Orthognathic surgery has the potential to compromise the vitality of the teeth. This paper aims to assess changes in pulp blood flow (PBF) and pulp sensibility (PS) of the anterior dentition following orthognathic surgery and to assess the influence of the proximity of the surgical osteotomy on the PBF and/or PS. METHODS Twenty-six patients undergoing orthognathic surgery (Le Fort I or bilateral sagittal split osteotomy [BSSO]) were compared to sixteen control patients treated by fixed appliances only using Laser Doppler flowmeter (LDF) and thermal testing (CO2 snow). Surgery patients were tested at T1 (presurgery), T2 (4-5 weeks postsurgery), T3 (3 months postsurgery), and T4 (6 months postsurgery). Control patients were tested at T1 (pretreatment), T2 (6 months posttreatment), T3 (12 months posttreatment), and T4 (18 months posttreatment). Differences between the maxilla and mandible were assessed. RESULTS No differences in PBF or PS were recorded in the control group. In the surgery group, both jaws followed the same pattern after surgery, an initial decrease at T2 followed by a gradual recovery to pretreatment PBF levels with no significant difference between T1 versus T4 in both jaws. No difference in PBF was observed between the maxilla and mandible at any testing time interval. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS PBF and PS of the anterior dentition was severely affected immediately postsurgery, followed by a gradual increase to full recovery. This pattern of recovery was exhibited in both jaws. A negative sensibility response or discoloration should not be seen as an indication of irreversible ischemic pulp changes. Monitoring for at least 6 months or using LDF as a confirmatory test is required before any irreversible endodontic treatment is to be considered.

Abstract
The main aim of orthognathic surgery is to provide a good occlusion and masticatory function and to achieve positive changes in facial aesthetics. The aim of this study was to determine the reasons behind patients' acceptance of orthognathic surgery and their expectations from this treatment, to assess whether their expectations were met, the change in their self-confidence and their satisfaction, and finally, to use the results obtained to inform future surgical procedures to increase patient satisfaction. The study was designed as a cross-sectional observational study and included 73 people treated with orthognathic surgery (surgery group) and 42 people with minimal crowding who did not require treatment (control group). The study found that the primary reason for requesting orthognathic surgery was to improve facial appearance and that patients had high expectations in this regard. Using the Social Appearance Anxiety Questionnaire and the Expectation and Satisfaction Questionnaire, 73.97 % of patients in our study said the treatment met their expectations and 90.41 % said they were satisfied with the overall results of the surgery. The study also highlighted the importance of surgeon-patient communication and the satisfaction of the patient's environment with the final result in determining patient satisfaction. In conclusion, since patients' high expectations of orthognathic surgery influence treatment success and patient satisfaction, it is important to know and manage patients' expectations before treatment and to have good patient-surgeon communication to increase patient satisfaction after surgery.

Abstract
PURPOSE Evaluate which factors compromise patients' quality of life who have undergone orthognathic surgery in the pre and postoperative period of 2 years. STUDY DESIGN In this longitudinal prospective study, 46 adult patients undergoing orthognathic surgery were evaluated. The primary outcome variable was quality of life, assessed using the overall score of the orthognathic quality of life questionnaire (OQLQ) in the pre and 2-year postoperative periods. The predictor variables were axis I (temporomandibular dysfunction) and axis II (psychosocial) RDC/TMD diagnoses, assessed preoperatively and 2 years postoperatively; profile, asymmetry, and open bite preoperatively; and orthodontic treatment active 2 years postoperatively. The covariables were age and sex. The OQLQ score was compared preoperatively and postoperatively using the Wilcoxon test and with the other variables using the Mann-Whitney and Kruskall-Wallis tests. RESULTS Preoperatively, higher OQLQ scores were associated with myofascial pain (P = .012) and severe depression (P = .030). Two years after surgery, there was an improvement in overall OQLQ (P < .001), myofascial pain (P = .012) and chronic pain (P = .001). However, higher OQLQ scores were associated with individuals who had myofascial pain (P = .012), active orthodontic treatment (P = .007), and other nonspecific physical symptoms including pain (NSPSIP) (P = .049). CONCLUSION Quality of life was affected preoperatively by myofascial pain and depression, and although it improved significantly 2 years after surgery, it continued to be affected by myofascial pain, NSPSIP, and active orthodontic treatment.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to assess how vertical skeletal malocclusion affects oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among a sample of individuals comprising adolescents, young adults, and adults seeking orthodontic treatment. From January 2019 to March 2020, participants were consecutively enrolled. The assessment of OHRQoL involved measurement using the oral health impact profile (OHIP-14). Lateral cephalograms were performed to measure the vertical skeletal divergency with four cephalometric measurements. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed. The Mann-Whitney test was applied to compare OHRQoL scores according to the vertical dimension category. The mean age of the participants ranged between 30.3 ± 14.9 and 29.9 ± 14.4 and there was a majority of female participants, between 64.1% and 65.9%. There were no statistically significant differences observed between hyperdivergent and normodivergent groups in either the total score or any domain of the OHIP-14 questionnaire. Individuals with hyperdivergent facial morphology did not show a reduced OHRQoL compared with a normodivergent facial type.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of orthognathic therapy on patients' quality of life. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted including all prospective studies that compared pretherapeutic and posttherapeutic Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) or Overall Quality of Life (OQOL) questionnaire scores. Studies in patients with congenital deformities, clefts, or posttraumatic or cancer-associated deformities were excluded. Overall, 23 prospective studies were included; 8 used OHIP, 9 used OQOL and 6 used both questionnaires. A total of 1039 patients were identified (60.29% women, 39.71% men), with a mean age of 45.17 years. All analyzed studies showed in both OHIP and OQLQ an improvement of the quality of life in patients after orthognathic therapy. While improved scores could be observed in all investigated criteria, the studies demonstrated that social and aesthetic aspects showed the most prominent impact. Comparison of different Angle Classes showed, furthermore, that Class III patients had an even greater advantage over those with a Class II deformity. The review confirms that the quality of life in patients with orthognathic therapy improves significantly in all observed aspects. With regard to Angle Classes, Class III patients showed an even greater improvement than Class II patients.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to understand the influence of orthosurgical treatment on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with Class II and III skeletal malocclusion by conducting a mixed method case series study. Nineteen patients submitted to orthosurgical treatment in a private practice in Brazil were included in the sample. Data were collected retrospectively and interviews were held from March 2020 to July 2021. Patients answered to the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) in the first part of the interview and subsequently answered the qualitative questions. The overall mean of OHIP-14 after treatment was 4.21 (SD 4.68). The qualitative data were analyzed according to thematic analysis and four themes emerged from the interviews: a) concept of quality of life, b) pre-treatment life, c) post-treatment life, and d) positive and negative aspects of treatment. Quality of Life was reported by the patients as the absence of feeling pain, having emotional and physical health, having a satisfactory esthetic appearance and self-esteem. Before treatment, most Class II patients used to complain about breathing and sleeping problems, while Class III patients complained more intensely about esthetics. Pain was a common problem reported by both Class II and Class III patients. In general, improvement was perceived in self-esteem, esthetics, function and pain. Complaints about negative aspects of the treatment were restricted to the postoperative period. The orthosurgical treatment was important for improving the OHRQoL of patients in terms of esthetic, functional and psychosocial aspects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Skeletal class III malocclusion is a common dentofacial deformity. Orthognathic treatment changes the position of the jaws and affects the shape of the upper airway to some extent. The aim of this study was to use multislice spiral computer tomography data and orthognathic knowledge to quantify the relationship between the amount of surgical movement of the maxilla or mandible in all three spatial planes and the changes in airway volume that occurred. METHODS A retrospective study of 50 patients was conducted. Preoperative and postoperative linear changes related to skeletal movements of the maxilla and mandible were measured and compared to changes in the most constricted axial level (MCA) and its anteroposterior (MCA-AP) and transverse diameters (MCA-TV). Correlation tests and linear regression analysis were performed. RESULTS Significant interactions were observed between the anterior vertical movement of the maxilla and the MCA-AP. The anteroposterior movement distance of the mandible was significantly correlated with changes in the oropharyngeal, velopharyngeal, total airway volume, MCA, MCA-AP, and MCA-TV. The change in the mandibular plane angle was significantly correlated with the change in velopharyngeal volume, total airway volume (nasopharynx, oropharynx, velopharynx), and MCA. The linear regression model showed that oropharyngeal volume decreased by 350.04 mm3, velopharyngeal volume decreased by 311.50 mm3, total airway volume decreased by 790.46 mm3, MCA decreased by 10.96 mm2 and MCA-AP decreased by 0.73 mm2 when point B was setback by 1 mm. CONCLUSIONS Anteroposterior mandibular control is the key to successful airway management in all patients. This study provides estimates of volume change per millimeter of setback to guide surgeons in treatment planning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with Down syndrome have severe facial deformities that can precipitate functional consequences and social stigmatization. Craniofacial surgical intervention can play a role in improving these symptoms and patient quality of life. The objective of this study was to investigate the long-term outcomes of distraction osteogenesis and orthognathic surgical intervention in patients with Down syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS Charts of 3 patients with Down syndrome who were treated with external maxillary distraction osteogenesis were retrospectively reviewed. The patients' caregivers were prospectively interviewed between 10 and 15 years after surgery to determine surgical stability, long-term function, and quality of life status. RESULTS All patients and their caregivers reported excellent results with improvements in function and quality of life. Facial skeletal changes have been stable over time. The cephalometric analysis demonstrated significant maxillary advancement in all 3 patients and mandibular changes to correct mandibular prognathism and asymmetry in the patient who underwent finishing orthognathic surgery. CONCLUSIONS External maxillary distraction osteogenesis and orthognathic surgery may be considered in select patients with Down syndrome as part of their multidisciplinary health care. These interventions can result in long-term improvements in patient function and quality of life.

Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the quality of life in patients with Class III deformities after orthognathic surgery. A total of the 40 patients (26 female and 14 male) were included. The mean age of the patients was 24.85. Patients' ages ranged from 20 to 36 years. All patients received orthodontic treatment before surgery. Sagittal split ramus osteotomy was performed for single jaw patients. Le Fort I osteotomy and sagittal split ramus osteotomy was performed for double jaw patients. Patients completed the Oral Health Impact Profile 14 (OHIP-14) and Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) three times. [Preoperatively (T0), 1st week after orthognathic surgery (T1) and in the 6th - 12th months after orthognathic surgery (T2)]. There was a statistically significant difference in the dimensions of OHIP-14 when the preoperative (T0) score, postoperative 1st week (T1) score and postoperative 6th - 12th month (T3) score are compared among themselves except for psychological discomfort, physical disability, and handicap. OQLQ total score and preoperative (T0) score was greater than the postoperative 1st week (T1) score and the postoperative 1st week(T1) score was greater than the postoperative 6th - 12th month (T2) scores except oral function. When single jaw and double jaw surgeries were compared, no statistically significant difference was found between OHIP-14 and OQLQ total scores for preoperative, postoperative 1st week, and postoperative 6th - 12th months. When both OHIP-14 and OQLQ scores were examined after orthognathic surgery, the OHRQOL of patients with Class III dentofacial deformity improved significantly.

Abstract
Objectives:
A questionnaire, specific to the clinical condition treated is important. The aim of this study was to evaluate the Quality of life (QOL) amongst patients undergoing orthognathic surgery using a customized questionnaire encompassing, patients’ perception of facial form and also patient perception of overall quality of care provided during the entire treatment.
Materials and Methods:
This prospective, qualitative, observational study was carried out on 21 patients, who underwent Ortho-surgical management between Jan 2019 and Mar 2020. The Orthognathic QOL questionnaire was customized, Phase I, immediately prior; and Phase II, 6 months after surgery. Appropriate analysis was done to compare Phase I and Phase II, with the level of significance set to P < 0.05.
Results:
“Aesthetics” was the most frequent reported reason for seeking treatment. The mean pre-/post-treatment difference for oral function was statistically significant. Majority (87%) of patients reported surgical outcomes met their expectations. Results, post-surgery; good hospital care (33.3%), supportive doctors (28.57%) and regular follow up (9.52%).
Conclusion:
“Patients’ perspective” of treatment, is often neglected, the immense importance of which has been duly reflected in our study. We recommend the use of our questionnaire in a similar, broad based multicentric study with a larger patient base, will aid in improving overall outcome of ortho-surgical interventions.

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the change and stability of mandibular morphology in patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed fifty patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism from the West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, between January 2018 to March 2021. The spiral CT data before surgery, within two weeks after surgery, and at more than six months after surgery of each patient were collected. According to the deflection direction of the chin, the bilateral mandibles were defined as the long side and the short side. The morphological data of the bilateral condyle, the mandibular ramus, and the mandibular body were analyzed to determine the effect and stability of BSSRO on asymmetric mandibular prognathism. Results: It was found that the long-side mandible had greater condylar volume and diameter, mandibular ramus height and volume, and mandibular body length and volume (p < 0.05) before surgery. After surgery, the volume of the mandibular ramus increased, while the length and volume of the mandibular body decreased (p < 0.05) at the long side of the mandible; the morphological changes of the mandibular ramus and body at the short side of the mandible were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). When comparing the long and short sides of the mandible, the long side still had greater height and volume of the mandibular ramus (p < 0.01). The volume difference of the mandibular body from the two sides was corrected (p > 0.05), and the length difference of the mandibular body from the two sides was overcorrected (p < 0.05). At more than six months after surgery, the volume of the mandibular ramus and body increased, while their height decreased at the long side of the mandible (p < 0.05). For the other side, or the short side, the volume of the ramus and body increased, too. However, their height decreased (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The results of this study suggested good effect and stability of BSSRO on asymmetric mandibular prognathism, except for the correction of ramus height and volume.

Abstract
Our aim was to assess the impact of combined orthodontic-surgical treatment on patients' oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) according to type of dentofacial deformities, by synthesizing the available evidence. METHODS Search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane databases. The eligibility criteria were studies that measured OHRQoL before-after orthognathic surgery, with results disaggregated by Class II and III. Two researchers independently performed the selection process, data extraction, and methodological quality assessment. Meta-analysis of the standard mean differences (SMD) was performed using random effect models. RESULTS The search identified 1047 references. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria, and four were included in the meta-analysis. The SMD of OHRQL global score showed large improvement 4-7 months after surgery in Class II and III patients (2.09, 95% CI 0.68 to 3.49 and 1.96, 95% CI 1.22 to 2.70, respectively). The sensitivity analyses, excluding studies with weak methodological quality, showed that Class III patients' improvement in functional limitation was significantly higher than in Class II patients (SMD 0.57, 95% CI 0.12-1.02). CONCLUSIONS There is not enough evidence to support differences between Class II and III patients in the OHRQoL impact after orthognathic surgery, but findings suggest lower improvement of some domains in Class II patients.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate changes in general and oral health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with dentofacial deformity undergoing orthognathic surgery, and whether these changes vary according to type of deformity. Material and methods This is a prospective longitudinal multicenter study of patients with dentofacial deformities (n = 90). The Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ), Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), and Short-Form Health Survey version2 (SF-36v2) were self-completed by patients before surgery, 3 and 6 months after orthognathic surgery. Change was tested using paired t-test, and compared between Class II and Class III of dentofacial deformity by unpaired t-test. The magnitude of change was examined estimating the standardized response mean (SRM). Results The OQLQ and OHIP-14 showed statistically significant improvements 6 months after surgery, compared with the pre-surgical evaluation, but the SF-36v2 only in the physical component summary. The SRM was large in OQLQ oral function (-1.11) and dentofacial facial aesthetics (-0.76) dimensions, and moderate in most of OHIP-14 dimensions. Differences in mean change between Class II and III were statistically significant for global scores of OQLQ (-10.08 vs -20.30, p = 0.0271) and OHIP-14 (-3.79 vs -10.56, p = 0.0144). Conclusions A significant improvement was observed in oral HRQoL and in the physical component of general health in patients with dentofacial deformities Class II and III after orthognathic surgery. Improvement was greater among Class III than in Class II patients. Clinical relevance These results provide patients, oral health care professionals, and planners with valuable information to make evidence-based decisions and facilitate shared clinical decision-making, taking into account the patients’ perspective.

Abstract
Background Skeletal mandibular protrusion would influence to the muscle fatigue of the masticatory muscles. Establishing a diagnostic procedures combining physiological and biochemical information is necessary for quantitative evaluation of masticatory muscle fatigue. Objective The transverse relaxation time (T2 time) of muscle functional magnetic resonance imaging (mfMRI), and 31P‐magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) were used to investigate the reliability as parameters for measuring the masseter muscle in patients with skeletal mandibular prognathism. Method The subjects were 19 patients diagnosed as skeletal mandibular protrusions and 19 healthy subjects as a control group. Transverse relaxation time (T2 value) determined by mfMRI along with creatine phosphate (PCr) and inorganic phosphorus (Pi) determined by 31P‐MRS before, during, and after clenching were used for molecular imaging of muscle fatigue. Results The average T2 value of the patient group was significantly higher than that of the healthy control group at rest. Furthermore, the average T2 value transiently increased in both groups during experimental clenching. The PCr and Pi showed a tendency toward a transient decrease and increases, respectively. The pH in the masseter muscle showed a transient decrease in both groups prior to and following experimental clenching. The pH in the masseter muscle of the patient group was significantly lower than that in the healthy control group at rest and recovery. Conclusion We showed mfMRI and 31P‐MRS are useful for evaluating masseter fatigue during clenching, and the masseter muscle in the prognathic patients showed more severe fatigue than the healthy controls.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate and compare the changes in psychosocial status, self-esteem, and quality of life in patients treated with conventional and SF approaches. 14 patients (mean age 23.04±3.36; 9 male and 5 female) who met the inclusion criteria were included in the SF group; 18 patients with class III malocclusion (mean age 29.27±3.78; 9 male and 9 female) were included in the COS group. In the research protocol, the first questionnaires were carried out 2 weeks before surgery (T0); second survey approximately 4 weeks after surgery (T1); and the third one was done to patients after the treatment was completed (debonding) (T2). In our study, Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ), Pyschosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ), Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), Beck Depression Inventory second edition (BDI-II) and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), surveys were conducted. No statistically significant difference was observed in all of the PIDAQ parameters and most of the OQLQ parameters within the COS and SF groups (P>0.05). When the BDI-II results were examined, different trends in scores were observed between the two groups, and this difference was found to be statistically significant (P<0.05). In the SF approach, progressive improvement was detected in the patients in terms of psychosocial and quality of life in the early period of treatment. The greater improvement in psychological and social characteristics in the SF approach compared to conventional orthognathic surgery may also be associated with a shorter treatment time.

Current Trends in Orthognathic Surgery in Poland—A Retrospective Analysis of 124 Cases. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2021. Abstract
The analysis aims at assessing the current trends in orthognathic surgery. The retrospective study covered a group of 124 patients with skeletal malocclusion treated by one team of maxillofacial surgeons at the University Hospital in Zielona Góra, Poland. Various variables were analysed, including demographic characteristics of the group, type of deformity, type of osteotomy used, order in which osteotomy was performed and duration of types of surgery. The mean age of the patients was 28 (ranging from 17 to 48, SD = 7). The group included a slightly bigger number of females (59.7%), with the dominant skeletal Class III (64.5%), and asymmetries were found in 21.8% of cases. Types of osteotomy performed during surgeries were divided as follows: LeFort I, segmental LeFort I, BSSO, BSSO with genioplasty, LeFort I with BSSO, LeFort I with BSSO and genioplasty, segmental LeFort I with BSSO, isolated genioplasty. Bimaxillary surgeries with and without genioplasty constituted the largest group of orthognathic surgeries (49.1%), and a slightly smaller percentage were one jaw surgeries (46.7%). A statistically significant correlation was found between the type of surgery and the skeletal class. In patients with skeletal Class III, bimaxillary surgeries were performed significantly more often than in patients with skeletal Class II (57.5% vs. 20.0%; p = 0.0002). The most common type of osteotomy in all surgeries was bilateral osteotomy of the mandible modo Obwegeser–Epker in combination with Le Fort I maxillary osteotomy (42.7%). The order of osteotomies in bimaxillary surgeries was mandible first in 61.3% of cases. The longest surgery was bimaxillary osteotomy with genioplasty (mean = 265 min), and the shortest surgery was isolated genioplasty (mean = 96 min). The results of the analysis show a significant differentiation between the needs of orthognathic surgery and the types of corrective osteotomy applied to the facial skeleton.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of orthognathic surgery on the long-term quality of life of patients with presurgical skeletal Class III and to identify its strongest effect-whether esthetic, social, or functional. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, the subjects were patients after orthognathic surgery for repairing skeletal Class III. Fifty-five patients who had undergone orthognathic surgery from 2013 to 2018 in the oral and maxillofacial surgery department participated in this study. Each participant completed a modified questionnaire used to assess the patient's esthetic, social, and functional abilities after orthognathic surgery. RESULTS The rate of esthetic improvement in orthognathic surgery patients was 88%. More than four-fifths (81.8%) of the patients reported improvement in their personal and social self-esteem and confidence. Finally, 40.7% of the patients reported functional improvement. No significant differences between male and female patients were found. All but one of the patients recommended orthognathic surgery for patients with similar problems. One in six (17.3%) patients was dissatisfied with the nasal appearance after the surgical procedure, while almost a quarter (21.8%) reported worsening of their mouth opening, and 25.4% reported worsening of TMJ (Temporo-Mandibular Joint) symptoms. Analysis of the results revealed no statistically significant pattern connecting preoperative overjet or overbite measures with satisfaction rates. CONCLUSIONS In this study, patient satisfaction with the orthognathic surgical procedure was mostly a result of improvements in facial esthetics, followed by psychological well-being and functional abilities. Most dissatisfaction after the orthognathic surgical procedure was related to nasal appearance, mouth opening, and TMJ complaints.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to quantify upper airway changes following mandibular orthognathic surgery. Treatment records of 50 patients who underwent mandibular orthognathic surgery were divided into 2 groups, that is, Group 1: Cases treated with Mandibular Advancement Surgery and Group 2: Cases treated with Mandibular Setback Surgery with 25 patients in each group. The Lateral Cephalogram and Acoustic Pharyngometry records of both groups were studied at T0 (01 week before surgery) and T1 (01 year postsurgery) for changes in linear airway measurements (Nasopharyngeal Airway Space - NAS, Superior Airway Space - SAS, Posterior Airway Space - PAS and Hypopharyngeal Airway Space (HAS)), hyoid bone position (Mandibular Plane Hyoid distance), mean area and mean volume. The percentage change and change in these parameters per millimeter advancement or setback of mandible at T1 was calculated. A significant increase in linear airway parameters (SAS and PAS); decrease in hyoid distance; and increase in volume and area of upper airway was observed at T1 in Group 1 and reverse was observed in Group 2. The change in airway parameters (SAS, PAS, mean volume and area) was more significant in Group 1 as compared to Group 2. In the current airway centric approach, meticulous assessment and prediction of long-term airway changes post surgery should be an integral part of ortho-surgical diagnosis and treatment planning and suitable modifications in the treatment plan must be made to cater for any potential adverse effects on airway.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of orthognathic surgery on quality of life (QoL) and to compare single- and double-jaw surgeries in terms of ratio and patient perceptions of the postoperative period. STUDY DESIGN A prospective, longitudinal observational study was conducted. The short form Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) were applied preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively to evaluate oral health-related QoL (OHRQoL). Additionally, patient perceptions of the immediate postoperative period were assessed at the first and fourth week after surgery. RESULTS One hundred consecutive patients were recruited and assigned to the single-jaw group (n = 24) or the double-jaw group (n = 76) according to the characteristics of each facial or occlusal deformity. The questionnaires showed lower scores for both groups after surgery, indicating significant benefits to OHRQoL. The whole sample OHIP-14 mean total scores decreased from 10.5 to 2.8 (P < .001, d = 1.35), whereas OQLQ showed a decrease from 48.4 to 11.6 (P < .001, d = 1.75). CONCLUSIONS Orthognathic surgery can improve OHRQoL, and long-term benefits outweigh the risks and discomfort associated with the treatment.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Orthognathic surgery is a common treatment modality for moderate to severe dentofacial deformities. This study aimed to determine the early postoperative changes in quality of life (QoL) after orthognathic surgery.Twenty patients were evaluated preoperatively (T0), postoperatively after 1 month (T1), and postoperatively after 3 months (T2). Short Form Oral Health Impact Profile and Orthognathic Quality of life Questionnaire were used as generic oral health-related and condition-specific QoL measures.Oral Health Impact Profile -14 and Orthognathic Quality of life Questionnaire scores significantly decreased from T0-T2. Physical pain, psychological disability, social disability, and handicap scores significantly decreased during this interval. Facial esthetic, function, awareness of facial deformity, and social aspects of deformity were also found to significantly improve. No significant difference was found between age groups; female patients had significantly greater preoperative Oral Health Impact Profil-14 scores than did male patients.Orthognathic surgery not only enhances the skeletal and facial relations, but also has significant positive effects on the patients' QoL, oral health, and psychological status.

Abstract
Background: The serum suPAR level is affected in humans by it increases with age. Therefore it makes difficult interpretation and any comparison of age varied groups. The aim of this study is to find simple way to age independent presentation of suPAR serum level for maxillofacial surgery purpose. Methods: In generally healthy patients from 15 to 59 y.o. suPAR level was tested in serum before orthognathic or minor traumatologic procedures. Five ways to make the suPAR serum level assessment independent of age are proposed. Results: One way of making suPAR levels independent of age led to the result with the same statistical distribution as in the raw suPAR serum material and this distribution is the normal. Conclusion: The simple way for suPAR serum level analysis without its dependence on patient age is calculation of the index of body inflammation understood as square root of squared suPAR serum level divided by logarithm of patient age to base 10.

Abstract
Background We investigated the efficacy of a maxillary Jackson-Pratt (J-P) suction drain for preventing maxillary sinus hematoma and facial swelling after maxillary Le Fort I osteotomy (LF1). Methods We retrospectively evaluated 66 patients who underwent LF1 at a single institution. Of these, 41 had a J-P suction tube inserted in the mandible and maxilla (maxillary insertion), and 25 had a J-P drain inserted in the mandible only (no maxillary insertion). Facial CT was obtained before and 4 days after surgery. We compared mean midfacial swelling and maxillary sinus haziness by t test and examined correlations between bleeding amount and body mass index (BMI). Results For the maxillary-insertion group, the ratio of total maxillary sinus volume to haziness (57.5 ± 24.2%) was significantly lower than in the group without maxillary drain insertion (65.5% ± 20.3; P = .043). This latter group, however, did not have a significantly greater midfacial soft tissue volume (7575 mm3) than the maxillary-insertion group (7250 mm3; P = .728). BMI did not correlate significantly with bleeding amount or facial swelling. Conclusions Suction drainage in the maxilla reduced maxillary sinus haziness after orthognathic surgery but did not significantly reduce midfacial swelling.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of orthognathic surgery on the quality of life (QoL) of patients with dentofacial deformity. This systematic review was performed through the survey of observational studies that had evaluated the impact of orthognathic surgery on the QoL of patients with dentofacial deformity. The article databases included PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, BBO, Cochrane Library, and grey literature. The risk of bias was analysed according to the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for quality assessment. The meta-analysis was performed considering the exposure before and after orthognathic surgery using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) versus the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ). A total of 2,263 articles were identified. Twelve studies remained in the qualitative synthesis and seven studies were included in the meta-analysis. The impact of QoL both preoperatively and postoperatively with the OHIP-14 questionnaire was 7.63 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.62 to 13.65; p = 0.01) and the OQLQ questionnaire was 20.53 (95% CI = 14.27 to 26.79; p < 0.0001). Overall impact of QoL was 16.01 (95% CI = 10.50 to 21.52; p < 0.0001), which showed that orthognathic surgery has an influence on the QoL. Orthognathic surgery generates positive impact on the QoL of patients with dentofacial deformity.

Abstract
This study conducted a cross-sectional investigation of facial appearance dissatisfaction between patients before undergoing orthognathic surgery and a non-surgical sample to evaluate the potential influencing factors of facial appearance dissatisfaction. A sample of 354 participants completed a set of questionnaires concerning facial appearance dissatisfaction, interpersonal pressure, media pressure, and fear of negative appearance evaluation (112 patients, 242 controls). The patients reported higher facial appearance dissatisfaction, more media pressure, more interpersonal pressure, and a greater fear of negative appearance evaluation among others than the control group. Moreover, regression analyses identified interpersonal pressure and fear of negative appearance evaluation as the main predictors of facial appearance dissatisfaction whether in the orthognathic patients or the control groups. The associations between the perceptions of interpersonal pressure, fear of negative appearance evaluation, and facial appearance dissatisfaction support the possible utility of strengthening social experiences and psychological intervention in preventing and treating these appearance-concerns, especially for the orthognathic patients.

Abstract
Summary
Background
Orthognathic surgery involves a change in the patient’s functional and aesthetic aspects.
Objective
The objective was to answer the following focused question: what is the impact on quality of life (QoL; aesthetic, function, social, and psychological aspects) in patients undergoing orthodontic-surgical treatment?
Search methods
Appropriate word combinations and truncations were selected and tailored specifically for each electronic database: PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycInfo, and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature and gray literature.
Selection criteria
Studies that met the following criteria was included: patients with dentofacial deformity (P); surgical correction through orthodontic-surgical treatment (E/I); before orthodontic-surgical treatment or patients with no dentofacial deformity (C); QoL (O); cross-sectional, cohort, case-control and randomized or non-randomized clinical trial (S).
Data collection and analysis
In phase 1, two reviewers independently reviewed the titles and abstracts of all references. All articles that did not meet the inclusion criteria were excluded. In phase 2, the same reviewers completely read the selected articles independently.
Results
A total of 2879 articles were retrieved during the final database search. Fifty-two articles were selected for full reading, of which 16 were excluded, resulting in 36 included articles. The meta-analysis was performed using 13 of the selected studies. When comparing the period before any treatment with the post-operative period of 4–8 weeks, there was an association only for facial aesthetics (mean difference = 3.00; 95 per cent confidence interval = 1.10–4.89; inconsistency index = 63 per cent). The comparison between the period before any treatment with the 6 month post-operative period showed an improved QoL in all of the domains evaluated and, when comparing data after the orthodontic-surgical preparation (before surgery) and after 5–12 months of surgery, there was also statistical significance with an increased QoL for all of the domains evaluated.
Conclusions
In conclusion, based on the results of this systematic review and meta-analysis, the evidence suggests an improvement in the QoL of patients undergoing orthodontic-surgical treatment regarding aesthetic, functional, social, and psychological aspects.

Abstract
PURPOSE Postoperative pain is a negative factor that seriously affects a surgical patient's rehabilitation. We investigated whether nalbuphine provides superior postoperative analgesia in orthognathic surgery compared with sufentanil and whether the superior analgesia is achieved by the regulation of inflammatory and oxidative stress. PATIENTS AND METHODS In the present randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial, 60 patients scheduled to undergo orthognathic surgery were randomized to receive 2.5 μg/kg of sufentanil (group S) or 2 mg/kg of nalbuphine (group N) for postoperative controlled intravenous analgesia. The primary outcome variable was the visual analog scale (VAS) score. The secondary outcome variables included the sedation score (Ramsay score) and plasma levels of inflammation factors, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and oxidant stress factors, including malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). RESULTS The VAS scores of group N were significantly lower than those of group S, and the Ramsay scores for group N were greater. The plasma levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and MDA for group N were significantly lower than those for group S, and the SOD levels were greater than those for group S. Furthermore, the VAS scores correlated positively with the plasma levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and MDA and correlated negatively with the SOD levels. CONCLUSIONS Nalbuphine offers better postoperative analgesia and sedation after orthognathic surgery. Nalbuphine also seems to provide superior postoperative analgesia by reducing inflammatory and oxidative stress.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to obtain insight into the perioperative condition of the maxillary sinus in the LeFort I osteotomy by evaluating clinically and radiographically. Materials and methods: 25 patients who required conventional LeFort I procedures for orthognathic correction were included in the study. Damage to the maxillary sinus during the procedure and its recovery were prospectively analysed using validated questionnaires for sino-nasal complaints using RSOM-31 (RSOM − rhinosinusitis outcome measure), VAS score (VAS − visual analogue scale) and CT scan to compare and analyse changes in maxillary sinus prior to surgery and postoperatively 2 months after the surgery. The scores obtained from RSOM-31 questionnaire was analysed using Chi-square test, VAS questionnaire was interpreted using Wilcoxon sign rank test and CT scan findings were analysed using Fischer's exact test. Results: Mucosal thickening assessed using CT scan was the only consistent finding that was evident for all the patients who underwent LeFort I osteotomy which showed a statistically significant results of P < 0.05, whereas clinical correlation showed insignificant results of P > 0.05. Conclusion: In our attempt on extensive patient analysis we found that mucosal thickening was the prime alteration that was observed radiographically and no clinical changes were evident.

Abstract
Background The quality of life in Class III malocclusion patients are worse than those without the disorder and previous studies have shown that surgical orthodontic treatment has a different effect on these patients compared with mild or moderate malocclusion. This study aimed to investigate the changes in quality of life in patients with Class III malocclusion during surgical orthodontic treatment in Chinese young adults. Methods The 14-item Short Form Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), and the 22-item Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) were used to assess the effect of surgical orthodontic treatment on the quality of life in 21 patients with Class III malocclusion at pre-treatment (T0), pre-surgical orthodontic treatment (6 to 8 months, T1) and post-surgical orthodontic treatment (6 to 8 months after surgery, T2), and 24 healthy individuals were included as controls. The comparisons in numerical variables between patients and controls were performed using Mann-Whitney U test. The scores of the two questionnaires between T0, T1, T2 and controls (Tc) were compared using generalized estimating equation. Results According to OHIP-14 questionnaire, the mean scores in T0 and T1 were higher than those in T2 and Tc (P < 0.001), and a significant decrease was observed after post-surgical orthodontic treatment (P < 0.001), which achieved a level similar to the control group (P > 0.05). As to OQLQ questionnaire, the mean scores of all domains showed a significant increase between T0 and T1 except for awareness of dentofacial aesthetics (P > 0.05) and social aspects of dentofacial deformity (P > 0.05), followed by a significant decrease between T1 and T2. Conclusion Surgical orthodontic treatment may improve quality of life in patients with Class III malocclusion, but pre-surgical orthodontic treatment may have an adverse effect on quality of life.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dentofacial deformities have an impact on quality of life (QOL). Many factors can influence this perception, including genetic aspects. ANKK1 and DRD2 genes are associated with dopaminergic system and could modulate behavioral dysfunction. PURPOSE The impact of orthognathic surgery and associated factors on QOL of adults was evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS The abbreviated World Health Organization Quality of Life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF) was applied to patients from two surgery services one week before (T0) and six months after surgery (T1). The independent variables were age, sex, race, facial pattern, presence of jaw asymmetry and vertical deformities, and polymorphisms associated with ANKK1 and DRD2 genes. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed. RESULTS There was improvement in the perception of QOL from T0 to T1 in the general score, in the physical and psychological domains, and in the quality of life and general health perception (QOLGHP) (p < 0.001). In this interval, individuals aged ≥30 years reported positive impacts on all outcomes (p < 0.05), whereas in women this improvement did not occur only for the physical domain (p = 0.136). There was an association between the polymorphisms associated with the ANKK1 gene (rs1800497) and the perception of QOL in the social relationship's domain (p = 0.021) and QOLGHP (p = 0.042). The other clinical conditions were not associated with outcomes (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Perception of QOL of patients improved following orthognathic surgery in physical, psychological, and QOLGHP domains. Aged ≥30 years, being women and polymorphisms associated with the ANKK1 gene were related to positive impacts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess, identify, and compare the personality traits and psychosocial status of two groups of patients undergoing orthognathic surgery and rhinoseptoplasty respectively. STUDY DESIGN This prospective study recruited patients referred for orthognathic surgery and for rhinoseptoplasty. The research protocol included the administrations of questionnaires to the patients during their last visit before surgery, including the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2), the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the tree drawing test (or Baum test), and the BC Scale. RESULTS As for MMPI-2, the highest (pathological) percentages were encountered in Hypochondriasis and Psychasthenia scales within the Orthognathic Surgery Group, whereas in the rhinoseptoplasty group, the highest scores were obtained in the Hypochondriasis, Psychasthenia, Psychopathic Deviate, and Schizophrenia scales. CONCLUSIONS It would be important to assess some characteristics of the patients' mental health and emotional state prior to surgery, including depression, anxiety, panic, and aggression. The overview of these factors may give an insight into the psychological and emotional capacity of the patients undergoing orthognathic and rhinoseptoplasty surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Orthognathic surgery (OGS) is associated with extensive surgical intervention within the soft and hard tissues of the facial region of the skull leading to inflammatory reactions. The presence of postoperative swelling indicates the accumulation of exudate or transudate; both these fluids occur in surgery. Massive swelling is a significant problem, because the tension of tissues intensifies pain sensations. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the kinesio taping method (KT) in patients after orthognathic surgery in the area of the facial skull in terms of eliminating postoperative swelling. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study of the impact of kinesiology tape applied after orthognathic surgery to the craniofacial area on the elimination of swelling was performed in sixteen patients who suffered from this complication after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy. RESULTS The swelling was shown to be reduced after KT; within the same study the differences were statistically significant between the left and right sides and for the same side (p<0.05). The application of the lymphatic kinesio taping method led to the reduction of tension in the affected area and restoration of proper lymphatic circulation in the region covered by swelling. This allows for the improvement of the blood and lymph microcirculation and activation of self-healing processes. CONCLUSIONS The analysis of the impact of the practical use of the lymphatic KT on complications after orthognathic surgery revealed that it had a beneficial effect on the reduction of swelling. The use of the KT method seems promising because it is simple to carry out, not traumatic, economical and rarely causes undesirable allergies.
