The Impact of Parasitic Infestation on Nutritional Status and Micronutrients among Children

Background

Micronutrient deficiency is a great problem that is augmented by infection and poor nutrition. Iron, zinc, and selenium are trace elements needed for human growth.

Objective

To investigate the impact of parasitic infection on nutritional status and serum iron, zinc, and selenium in children attending Pediatrics Outpatient Clinic of Zagazig University Hospitals. Subjects and Methods. A case-control study included 140 parasitic infected children and one hundred age- and sex-matched controls. Anthropometric measures were evaluated using specific Egyptian growth charts. Parasites were detected in stool specimens using standard microscopic methods. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used for the detection of serum iron, zinc, and selenium. To examine the statistical relationship between intestinal parasitic infection and the relevant variables (gender, residence, socioeconomic status, and age group), the nonparametric chi-square (χ2) test was used. Data were analyzed statistically using SPSS version 25.

Results

Parasitic infected children showed a statistically significant low weight for age, height for age, and BMI. Serum iron, zinc, and selenium were significantly lower in parasitic infected children than controls. Serum iron, zinc, and selenium have significant positive correlations with weight, height, and BMI, respectively.

Conclusion

Studied serum micronutrients especially zinc and iron and anthropometric indices were significantly lower in parasitically infected children.

Prevalence of Intestinal Parasitosis in Guinea: Systematic Review of the Literature and Meta-Analysis

BACKGROUND

Intestinal parasitosis constitute a major public health issue, particularly in sub-tropical and tropical areas. Even though they are classified as neglected tropical diseases, no national study has been carried out recently in Guinea to estimate the prevalence of intestinal parasitosis.

OBJECTIVE

A systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the overall prevalence of intestinal parasitosis in Guinea.

METHOD

The PRISMA method was used to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis. The studies carried out in order to study intestinal parasitosis in Guinea and published between 2010 and 2020 were searched in online public databases. The prevalence of parasitosis was calculated by a random-effects meta-analysis. Subgroup comparisons were performed using Q-tests. Statistical analyses were performed with the R software. This review was registered with PROSPERO under the identification number CRD42022349743.

RESULTS

69 studies were selected out of 1230 studies identified in online public databases. The meta-analysis involved 44,186 people with an overall prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections of 52%.

CONCLUSIONS

This is the first study in Guinea to assess the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in different regions of the country. It was found that intestinal parasitosis are a real health problem in Guinea, hence, the need to put in place national strategies for regular control.

Current status of intestinal parasitosis among patients attending teaching hospitals in Zagazig district, Northeastern Egypt

Almost 80% of health problems in the developing world are due to malnutrition and infectious diseases, which are mainly parasitic. Updated records on the prevalence of parasitic infections and the potential risk factors are essential to enhancing control strategies. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the current situation of intestinal parasitism among patients attending teaching hospitals in Zagazig district, Northeastern Egypt. The study involved five hundred cases. They were all subjected to faecal examination using direct smear measure and two commercial faecal concentrators: Mini-Parasep® solvent-free and Mini-FLOTAC procedures. Mini-FLOTAC was performed with two solutions (FS2: saturated sodium chloride and FS7: zinc sulphate). The overall prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections was 56%. Different species were identified, like Giardia lamblia (12.6%), Entamoeba histolytica/dispar (10%), Ascaris lumbricoides (8.8%) and Hymenolepis nana (8.6%). Data analyses revealed a significant association of intestinal parasitism with different socio-demographic features of the participants. Our results showed a better diagnostic performance of Mini-Parasep® in the overall recovery of intestinal parasites. It was more accurate than Mini-FLOTAC in diagnosing both helminths and protozoan infections. Mini-FLOTAC (FS2) exhibited a higher sensitivity than FS7 for helminth recovery (74.6% vs 53.4%), while FS7 was more sensitive for protozoan infections (50.6% vs 43.8%). Intestinal parasitosis remains a challenging health problem in Zagazig city, wherever reliable diagnostic approaches are limited. Thus, our study has proposed the value of the commercial concentrators (Mini-Parasep® and Mini-FLOTAC) as alternative techniques for diagnosing a large variety of parasite species in resource-constrained settings.

Anemia and intestinal parasites in farmers and family members and sheep in two agro-ecological zones in Senegal

The burden of anemia in Senegal is high, particularly in children and women in rural households. The main objectives of the study reported here were (i) to measure and compare the prevalence of anemia and intestinal parasitic infections in farmers and family members and sheep in two agro-ecological zones in Senegal and (ii) to examine the association between anemia and age or sex in farmers and family members. The study was conducted in Mpal (250 km from Dakar, the capital city) and Diawara (700 km from Dakar, a remote location near the Malian border). In humans, the prevalence of anemia was higher in Diawara (64/86 = 74%), compared to Mpal (13/29 = 45%) (p < 0.01). Using logistic regression, the odds of anemia were 20.3, 5.7, and 3.2 times higher in children 1–4 years old, children 5–12 years-old, and teenagers 13–19 years old, respectively, compared to adults 20–60 years old, after controlling for study site and sex (p < 0.05). In Diawara, the odds of anemia were 2.9 times higher in women, compared to men, after controlling for age (p = 0.06). The prevalence of intestinal parasites (Giardia sp.) was the same (7%) at both locations. In sheep, the prevalence of low packed cell volume (PCV) and low body condition was higher in Diawara (48/60 = 60% and 11/60 = 18%, respectively), compared to Mpal (23/46 = 50% and 0/46 = 0%, respectively) (p < 0.05). Clinical anemia was associated (p < 0.01) with low PCV and a positive diagnosis of H. contortus. Overall, the prevalence of anemia was higher in farmers and family members and owned sheep in Diawara. In addition, anemia was more common in children and women, an indication that intra-household food allocation may be regulated in favor of men and older age groups. The consequences of livestock affected with anemia and undernutrition can be significant. High morbidity and mortality in livestock can lead to low household income, inadequate household access to and individual consumption of animal source foods, and subsequent risk of anemia in children and women in rural households in Senegal.
