Silicon-based nanoparticles for mitigating the effect of potentially toxic elements and plant stress in agroecosystems: A sustainable pathway towards food security

Due to their size, flexibility, biocompatibility, large surface area, and variable functionality nanoparticles have enormous industrial, agricultural, pharmaceutical and biotechnological applications. This has led to their widespread use in various fields. The advancement of knowledge in this field of research has altered our way of life from medicine to agriculture. One of the rungs of this revolution, which has somewhat reduced the harmful consequences, is nanotechnology. A helpful ingredient for plants, silicon (Si), is well-known for its preventive properties under adverse environmental conditions. Several studies have shown how biogenic silica helps plants recover from biotic and abiotic stressors. The majority of research have demonstrated the benefits of silicon-based nanoparticles (Si-NPs) for plant growth and development, particularly under stressful environments. In order to minimize the release of brine, heavy metals, and radioactive chemicals into water, remove metals, non-metals, and radioactive components, and purify water, silica has also been used in environmental remediation. Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) have become a huge threat to food security through their negative impact on agroecosystem. Si-NPs have the potentials to remove PTEs from agroecosystem and promote food security via the promotion of plant growth and development. In this review, we have outlined the various sources and ecotoxicological consequences of PTEs in agroecosystems. The potentials of Si-NPs in mitigating PTEs were extensively discussed and other applications of Si-NPs in agriculture to foster food security were also highlighted.

Assessment of Potentially Toxic Element Concentrations in Soil And Vegetables and Impact on Human Health Through TF, EDI, and HRI Indicators: Case Study Anadrinia Region (Kosovo)

Vegetable cultivation areas in the Anadrinia region may have higher than background concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from contaminated sources including anthropogenic activity and lithologic composition. The purpose of the present study was to assess PTEs concentrations in soil and vegetables and their impact on human health. In this study, 50 soils and 5 vegetables were sampled from the studied area. PTEs (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) after digestion in microwave system. PTEs in soil and vegetables were assessed and compared to international data (Dutch List and WHO/FAO 2011), and their toxicological risk was estimated using transfer factor (TF), estimated daily intake (EDI), and hazard quotients (HQ). The average values of As, Cd, Co, Fe, and Mn in soil were 44.96, 0.324, 16.34, 13,172, and 765.1 mg/kg, and Cr, Ni, and Pb in vegetables were 21.02, 17.11, and 4.982 mg/kg. TF values were less than 1, suggesting low bioaccumulation. EDI values of Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were 6.29, 6.23, 2.09, and 16.6 mg/kg, higher than international guidelines. HQ values of Pb, Ni, and Cu were 6.22, 3.66, and 1.72, higher than maximum tolerable value 1 indicating significant health risk. Some of the analyzed elements in soil and vegetable exceeded permissible limits to Dutch List and WHO/FAO 2011, respectively. From a health point of view, this study revealed vegetable contamination, recommends periodic monitoring.

Pollution and health risk assessment of trace metal in vegetable field soils in the Eastern Nile Delta, Egypt

The accumulation of trace metals in vegetable field soils is of increasing worry because of the potential health hazards and their detrimental effects on soil ecosystems. To investigate the state of trace metal pollution in vegetable field soils, 60 surface soil samples were collected from vegetable fields across the Eastern Nile Delta region, Egypt. The results concluded that the concentrations of Cu, Mn, and Ni were lesser than their corresponding background values, while the concentrations of Cd, Co, Pb, and Zn were exceeding their background values. The pollution indices showed that the studied soil experienced low to moderate contamination and the Cd and Cr contamination was serious. The hazard index values of nine trace metals signified that there was no adverse non-carcinogenic risk for adults and children. The carcinogenic risk of Cd, Co, Ni, and Pb for both age groups was within acceptable limits, while Cr had critical carcinogenic hazards for children. Overall, the quality of studied soils is relatively safe, although some samples impose serious pollution problems of Cd and Cr. Thus, properly monitored trace metals and soil management action should be applied to reduce further soil pollution in vegetable fields in the Eastern Nile Delta.

Sources, bioaccumulation, health risks and remediation of potentially toxic metal(loid)s (As, Cd, Cr, Pb and Hg): an epitomised review

The release of potentially toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs) such as As, Cd, Cr, Pb and Hg has become a serious threat to the environment. The anthropogenic contribution of these PTMs, especially Hg, is increasing continuously, and coal combustion in thermal power plants (TPPs) is considered to be the highest contributor of PTMs. Once entered into the environment, PTMs get deposited on the soil, which is the most important sink of these PTMs. This review centred on the sources of PTMs from coal and flyash and their enrichment in soil, chemical behaviour in soil and plant, bioaccumulation in trees and vegetables, health risk and remediation. Several remediation techniques (physical and chemical) have been used to minimise the PTMs level in soil and water, but the phytoremediation technique is the most commonly used technique for the effective removal of PTMs from contaminated soil and water. Several plant species like Brassica juncea, Pteris vittata and Helianthus annuus are proved to be the most potential candidate for the PTMs removal. Among all the PTMs, the occurrence of Hg in coal is a global concern due to the significant release of Hg into the atmosphere from coal-fired thermal power plants. Therefore, the Hg removal from pre-combustion (coal washing and demercuration techniques) coal is very essential to reduce the possibility of Hg release to the atmosphere.

Arsenic Contamination and Associated Health Risk (Brief Review)

The health risk assessment of residents consuming groundwater with high arsenic concentrations has attracted widespread concern. This study therefore is aimed at providing a framework to evaluate the risks imposed to local residents of Simaria Patti Ojha village of Bhojpur district, Bihar. Results showed that the mean values of ADD, HQ and CR were 5.1 µg/(Kg Day) (PTDI- 2.1 µg/(Kg Day), 5-17 (safe range <1) and 0.002-0.007(tolerable range, 10-6-10-4), respectively. Carcinogenic risk value was found as 4.7 × 10-3 around 100 times higher than safe range of 10−6–10−4, indicating high risks to the local residents. Hence, this study will help in suggesting suitable implementation measures on ground to deal with the risk of arsenic contamination and diseases caused due to its prolonged exposure.
