Microplastics release from coronary catheters: Insights from catheter analysis

Microplastics (MP) pose a significant environmental and health risk due to their pervasive presence and potential adverse effects. This study investigates the release of MP from cardiac invasive catheters, which are essential medical devices used in cardiovascular procedures. Twenty-one catheter samples from four diagnostic catheter and three guider catheter brands were analysed using a comprehensive experimental approach. MP were detected in all samples, with varying counts across brands and types. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference in MP counts among catheter brands, while morphological and chemical characterization provided insights into types, sizes and compositions of leached MP. Our detailed discussion highlights patient safety and health implications, emphasizing the need for further research to address MP leaching in catheter materials and to promote design improvements for sustainable healthcare practices.

Emergence of graphene as a novel nanomaterial for cardiovascular applications

Cardiovascular diseases (CDs) are the foremost cause of death worldwide. Several promising therapeutic methods have been developed for this approach, including pharmacological, surgical intervention, cell therapy, or biomaterial implantation since heart tissue is incapable of regenerating and healing on its own. The best treatment for heart failure to date is heart transplantation and invasive surgical intervention, despite their invasiveness, donor limitations, and the possibility of being rejected by the patient's immune system. To address these challenges, research is being conducted on less invasive and efficient methods. Consequently, graphene-based materials (GBMs) have attracted a great deal of interest in the last decade because of their exceptional mechanical, electrical, chemical, antibacterial, and biocompatibility properties. An overview of GBMs' applications in the cardiovascular system has been presented in this article. Following a brief explanation of graphene and its derivatives' properties, the potential of GBMs to improve and restore cardiovascular system function by using them as cardiac tissue engineering, stents, vascular bypass grafts,and heart valve has been discussed.

Research progress of metal biomaterials with potential applications as cardiovascular stents and their surface treatment methods to improve biocompatibility

Facing the growing issue of cardiovascular diseases, metallic materials with higher tensile strength and fatigue resistance play an important role in treating diseases. This review lists the advantages and drawbacks of commonly used medical metallic materials for vascular stents. To avoid post-procedural threats such as thrombosis and in-stent restenosis, surface treatments, and coating methods have been used to further improve the biocompatibility of these materials. Surface treatments including laser, plasma treatment, polishing, oxidization, and fluorination can improve biocompatibility by modifying the surface charges, surface morphology, and surface properties of the material. Coating methods based on polymer coatings, carbon-based coatings, and drug-functional coatings can regulate the surface properties, and also serve as an effective barrier to the interaction of metallic biomaterial surfaces with biomolecules, which can be used to improve corrosion resistance and stability, as well as improve their biocompatibility. Biocompatibility serves as the most fundamental property of cardiovascular stents, and maintaining the excellent and stable biocompatibility of cardiovascular stent surfaces is a current research bottleneck. Few reviews have been published on metallic biomaterials as cardiovascular stents and their surface treatments. For the purpose of advancing research on cardiovascular stents, common metal biomaterials, surface treatment methods, and coating methods to improve biocompatibility and comprehensive properties of the materials are described in this review. Finally, we suggest future directions for stent development, including continuously improving the durability and stability of permanent stents, accelerating the development of biodegradable stents, and strengthening feedback to improve the safety and reliability of cardiovascular stents.

Structural design and mechanical performance of composite vascular grafts

This study reviews the state of the art in structural design and the corresponding mechanical behaviours of composite vascular grafts. We critically analyse surface and matrix designs composed of layered, embedded, and hybrid structures along the radial and longitudinal directions; materials and manufacturing techniques, such as tissue engineering and the use of textiles or their combinations; and the corresponding mechanical behaviours of composite vascular grafts in terms of their physical–mechanical properties, especially their stress–strain relationships and elastic recovery. The role of computational studies is discussed with respect to optimizing the geometrics designs and the corresponding mechanical behaviours to satisfy specialized applications, such as those for the aorta and its subparts. Natural and synthetic endothelial materials yield improvements in the mechanical and biological compliance of composite graft surfaces with host arteries. Moreover, the diameter, wall thickness, stiffness, compliance, tensile strength, elasticity, and burst strength of the graft matrix are determined depending on the application and the patient. For composite vascular grafts, hybrid architectures are recommended featuring multiple layers, dimensions, and materials to achieve the desired optimal flexibility and function for complying with user-specific requirements. Rapidly emerging artificial intelligence and big data techniques for diagnostics and the three-dimensional (3D) manufacturing of vascular grafts will likely yield highly compliant, subject-specific, long-lasting, and economical vascular grafts in the near-future.

Anti-Thrombogenicity Study of a Covalently-Attached Monolayer on Stent-Grade Stainless Steel

Implantable devices fabricated from austenitic type 316L stainless steel have been employed significantly in medicine, principally because the material displays excellent mechanical characteristics and corrosion resistance. It is well known, however, that interaction of exposure of such a material to blood can initiate platelet adhesion and blood coagulation, leading to a harmful medical condition. In order to prevent undesirable surface platelet adhesion on biomaterials employed in procedures such as renal dialysis, we developed an ultrathin anti-thrombogenic covalently attached monolayer based on monoethylene glycol silane chemistry. This functions by forming an interstitial hydration layer which displays restricted mobility in the prevention of surface fouling. In the present work, the promising anti-thrombogenic properties of this film are examined with respect to platelet aggregation on 316L austenitic stainless steel exposed to whole human blood. Prior to exposure with blood, all major surface modification steps were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis and surface free-angle measurement by contact angle goniometry. End-stage anti-thrombogenicity detection after 20 min of blood exposure at 100 s^-1, 300 s^-1, 600 s^-1, 750 s^-1, and 900 s^-1 shear rates revealed that a significant reduction (>90%) of platelet adhesion and aggregation was achieved for surface-modified steel, compared with untreated material. This result is confirmed by experiments conducted in real time for 60-minute exposure to blood at 100 s^-1, 600 s^-1, and 900 s^-1 shear rates.

Graphene Coating Obtained in a Cold-Wall CVD Process on the Co-Cr Alloy (L-605) for Medical Applications

Graphene coating on the cobalt-chromium alloy was optimized and successfully carried out by a cold-wall chemical vapor deposition (CW-CVD) method. A uniform layer of graphene for a large area of the Co-Cr alloy (discs of 10 mm diameter) was confirmed by Raman mapping coated area and analyzing specific G and 2D bands; in particular, the intensity ratio and the number of layers were calculated. The effect of the CW-CVD process on the microstructure and the morphology of the Co-Cr surface was investigated by scanning X-ray photoelectron microscope (SPEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Nanoindentation and scratch tests were performed to determine mechanical properties of Co-Cr disks. The results of microbiological tests indicate that the studied Co-Cr alloys covered with a graphene layer did not show a pro-coagulant effect. The obtained results confirm the possibility of using the developed coating method in medical applications, in particular in the field of cardiovascular diseases.

Graphene Oxide Carboxymethylcellulose Nanocomposite for Dressing Materials

Sore, infected wounds are a major clinical issue, and there is thus an urgent need for novel biomaterials as multifunctional constituents for dressings. A set of biocomposites was prepared by solvent casting using different concentrations of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and exfoliated graphene oxide (Exf-GO) as a filler. Exf-GO was first obtained by the strong oxidation and exfoliation of graphite. The structural, morphological and mechanical properties of the composites (CMCx/Exf-GO) were evaluated, and the obtained composites were homogenous, transparent and brownish in color. The results confirmed that Exf-GO may be homogeneously dispersed in CMC. It was found that the composite has an inhibitory activity against the Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, but not against Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa. At the same time, it does not exhibit any cytotoxic effect on normal fibroblasts.
