Quantitative Evaluation of Scatter Correction in 128-slice Fan-Beam Computed Tomography Scan using Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission Monte Carlo Simulation

Background

Simulation of tomographic imaging systems with fan-beam geometry, estimation of scattered beam profile using Monte Carlo techniques, and scatter correction using estimated data have always been new challenges in the field of medical imaging. The most important aspect is to ensure the results of the simulation and the accuracy of the scatter correction. This study aims to simulate 128-slice computed tomography (CT) scan using the Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE) program, to assess the validity of this simulation and estimate the scatter profile. Finally, a quantitative comparison of the results is made from scatter correction.

Methods

In this study, 128-slice CT scan devices with fan-beam geometry along with two phantoms were simulated by GATE program. Two validation methods were performed to validate the simulation results. The data obtained from scatter estimation of the simulation was used in a projection-based scatter correction technique, and the post-correction results were analyzed using four quantities, such as: pixel intensity, CT number inaccuracy, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Results

Both validation methods have confirmed the appropriate accuracy of the simulation. In the quantitative analysis of the results before and after the scatter correction, it should be said that the pixel intensity patterns were close to each other, and the accuracy of the CT scan number reached <10%. Moreover, CNR and SNR have increased by more than 30%-65% respectively in all studied areas.

Conclusion

The comparison of the results before and after scatter correction shows an improvement in CNR and SNR while a reduction in cupping artifact according to pixel intensity pattern and enhanced CT number accuracy.

Scattered Radiation Distribution Utilizing Three Different Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Devices for Maxillofacial Diagnostics: A Research Study

This study aimed to estimate scattered radiation and its spatial distribution around three cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) devices, in order to determine potential positions for an operator to stand if they needed to be inside the CBCT room. The following devices were tested: Morita Accuitomo (CBCT1), Newtom Giano HR (CBCT2), Newtom VGi (CBCT3). Scattered radiation measurements were performed using different kVp, mA, and Field of View (FOV) options. An anthropomorphic phantom (NATHANIA) was placed inside the X-ray gantry to simulate clinical conditions. Scattered measurements were taken with the Inovision model 451P Victoreen ionization chamber once placed at fixed distances from each irradiation isocenter, away from the primary beam. A statistically significant (p < 0.001) difference was found in the mean value of the scattered radiation estimations between the CBCT devices. Scattered radiation was reduced with a different rate for each CBCT device as distance was increased. For CBCT1 the reduction was 0.047 μGy, for CBCT2 it was 0.036 μGy, and for CBCT3 it was 0.079 μGy, for every one meter from the X-ray gantry. Therefore, at certain distances from the central X-ray, the scattered radiation was below the critical level of 1 mGy, which is defined by the radiation protection guidelines as the exposure radiation limit of the general population. Consequently, an operator could stay inside the room accompanying the patient being scanned, if necessary.

Effects of Exposure Parameters and Voxel Size for Cone-Beam Computed Tomography on the Image Matching Accuracy with an Optical Dental Scan Image: An In Vitro Study

This study is aimed at assessing the effects of exposure parameters and voxel size for cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) on the image matching accuracy with an optical dental scan image. CBCT and optical scan images of a dry human mandible were obtained. Different CBCT settings were used: tube voltage, 60, 80, and 100 kVp; tube current, 6 and 8 mA; and voxel size, 100, 200, and 300 μm. Image matching between the CBCT and optical scan images was performed using implant planning software by dental professionals (n = 18). The image matching accuracy in each combination of CBCT settings was evaluated by assessing the linear discrepancy between the three-dimensionally reconstructed radiological image and the registered optical scan image using an image analysis software program. The Kruskal-Wallis test and a post hoc Mann–Whitney U test with Bonferroni correction were used to compare the accuracy of image registration between the groups (α = 0.05). Overall, the image matching accuracy was not significantly different between tube voltage and current settings; however, significantly higher image registration errors were found at the combination of 100 kVp tube voltage/8 mA tube current (F = 8.44, P < 0.001). Changes in voxel sizes did not significantly interfere with the image registration results. No interaction was found among voltage, current, and voxel size in terms of image registration accuracy (F = 2.022, P = 0.091). Different exposure parameter settings in tube voltage and tube current did not significantly influence the image matching accuracy between CBCT and optical dental scan images; however, a high radiation dose could be inappropriate. The image matching accuracy was not significantly affected by changing the voxel sizes of CBCT.
