Enhancement of the Comb Filtering Selectivity Using Iterative Moving Average for Periodic Waveform and Harmonic Elimination

Suppressing interferences of EIT on synchronous recording EEG based on comb filter for seizure detection

Background and objective

The purpose of this study was to eliminate the interferences of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) on synchronous recording electroencephalography (EEG) for seizure detection.

Methods

The simulated EIT signal generated by COMSOL Multiphysics was superimposed on the clinical EEG signal obtained from the CHB-MIT Scalp EEG Database, and then the spectrum features of superimposed mixed signals were analyzed. According to the spectrum analysis, in addition to high-frequency interference at 51.2 kHz related to the drive current, there was also low-frequency interference caused by switching of electrode pairs, which were used to inject drive current. A low pass filter and a comb filter were used to suppress the high-frequency interference and low-frequency interference, respectively. Simulation results suggested the low-pass filter and comb filter working together effectively filtered out the interference of EIT on EEG in the process of synchronous monitoring.

Results

As a result, the normal EEG and epileptic EEG could be recognized effectively. Pearson correlation analysis further confirmed the interference of EIT on EEG was effectively suppressed.

Conclusions

This study provides a simple and effective interference suppression method for the synchronous monitoring of EIT and EEG, which could be served as a reference for the synchronous monitoring of EEG and other medical electromagnetic devices.

A Design of Real-Time Data Acquisition and Processing System for Nanosecond Ultraviolet-Visible Absorption Spectrum Detection

Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy is widely used to monitor water quality, and rapid optical signal detection is a key technology in the process of spectrum measurement. In this paper, an ultrafast spectrophotometer system that can achieve spectrum data acquisition in a single flash of the xenon lamp (within 200 ns) is introduced, and a real-time denoising method for the spectrum is implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) to work cooperatively with the nanosecond spectrum acquisition system, in order to guarantee the quality of the spectrum signals without losing running speed. The hardware of the data acquisition and processing system are constructed on a Xilinx Spartan 6 FPGA chip and its peripheral circuit, including an analog to digital converter and a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor transistor (CMOS) sensor’s diver circuit. An oversampling method that is suitable for the CMOS sensor’s output is proposed, which works on the CMOS sensor’s dark current noise and readout noise. Another moving-average filter method is designed adaptively, which works on the low-frequency component to filter out the residual spectrum noise of the spectrum signal. The implementation of the filter on the FPGA has been optimized by using a pipelined structure and dual high-speed random-access memory (RAM). As a result, the CMOS linear image sensor successfully captured the spectrum of xenon flash light at the readout clock frequency of 500 kHz and the processing manipulation to the full UV-Vis spectrum data was accomplished at a sub-microsecond speed performance. After the digital filter and oversampling technology were implemented, the coefficient of variation of the measurements reduced from 9.57% to 1.74%, while the signal noise ratio (SNR) of the absorption spectrum increased nine times, compared to the raw data of the CMOS sensor’s output. The tests towards different analyte samples were conducted, and the system shows good performance on distinguishing different concentrations of different analyte solutions on both ultra-violet and visible spectrum bands. The present work showcases the potential of the CMOS sensor’s technique for the fast detection of contaminated water containing nitrate and organic compounds.

Dance Tempo Estimation Using a Single Leg-Attached 3D Accelerometer

We present a methodology that enables dance tempo estimation through the acquisition of 3D accelerometer signals using a single wearable inertial device positioned on the dancer’s leg. Our tempo estimation method is based on enhanced multiple resonators, implemented with comb feedback filters. To validate the methodology, we focus on the versatile solo jazz dance style. Including a variety of dance moves, with different leg activation patterns and rhythmical variations, solo jazz provides for a highly critical validation environment. We consider 15 different solo jazz dance moves, with different leg activation patterns, assembled in a sequence of 5 repetitions of each, giving 65 moves altogether. A professional and a recreational dancer performed this assembly in a controlled environment, following eight dancing tempos, dictated by a metronome, and ranging from 80 bpm to 220 bpm with 20 bpm increment steps. We show that with appropriate enhancements and using single leg signals, the comb filter bank provides for accurate dance tempo estimates for all moves and rhythmical variations considered. Dance tempo estimates for the overall assembles match strongly the dictated tempo—the difference being at most 1 bpm for all measurement instances is within the limits of the established beat onset stability of the used metronome. Results further show that this accuracy is achievable for shorter dancing excerpts, comprising four dance moves, corresponding to one music phrase, and as such enables real-time feedback. By providing for a dancer’s tempo quality and consistency assessment, the presented methodology has the potential of supporting the learning process, classifying individual level of experience, and assessing overall performance. It is extendable to other dance styles and sport motion in general where cyclical patterns occur.
