Neural Plastic Changes in the Subcortical Auditory Neural Pathway after Single-Sided Deafness in Adult Mice: A MEMRI Study

Clinical characteristics and prognosis of sudden sensorineural hearing loss in single-sided deafness patients

Background

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) in patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) is rare. The prognosis of the sole serviceable hearing ear is very important for these patients. However, the clinical characteristics and prognosis of SSNHL in SSD patients are not well-documented.

Objective

This study aimed to investigate the clinical features and treatment outcomes of SSNHL in SSD patients.

Methods

Clinical data of 36 SSD patients and 116 non-SSD patients with unilateral SSNHL from January 2013 to December 2022 were retrospectively investigated. The clinical characteristics of the SSD patients were analyzed. All SSD patients were treated with intratympanic steroids plus intravenous steroids. Pure-tone average (PTA) and word recognition score (WRS) before and after treatment were recorded. The hearing recovery of SSNHL in SSD patients in comparison with non-SSD patients was explored. Auditory outcomes in SSD patients with different etiologies were also compared.

Results

Initial hearing threshold showed no significant differences between the SSD group and the non-SSD group (66.41 ± 24.64 dB HL vs. 69.21 ± 31.48 dB HL, p = 0.625). The SSD group had a higher post-treatment hearing threshold (median (interquartile range, IQR) 53.13(36.56) dB HL) than the non-SSD group (median 32.50(47.5) dB HL, p < 0.01). Hearing gains (median 8.75(13.00) dB) and the rate of significant recovery (13.89%) were lower in the SSD group than in the non-SSD group (median 23.75(34.69) dB, 45.69%). The etiology of SSD was classified as SSNHL, special types of infection, chronic otitis media, and unknown causes. SSNHL accounted for the maximum proportion (38.9%) of causes of SSD in the SSD group. Hearing gains were lower in the SSNHL-SSD group than in other causes of the SSD group. A binary logistic regression analysis demonstrated that SSD serves as an indicator of unfavorable hearing recovery outcomes (OR = 5.264, p < 0.01).

Conclusion

The prognosis of SSNHL in SSD patients is unsatisfactory. SSNHL accounts for the maximum proportion of causes of SSD in this group of patients. For SSD patients caused by SSNHL, less hearing improvement after treatment was expected when SSNHL occurred in the contralateral ear in comparison with SSD patients with other causes.

The Protective Effects of Human Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Noise-Induced Hearing Loss of Rats

A few prior animal studies have suggested the transplantation or protective effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in noise-induced hearing loss. This study intended to evaluate the fates of administered MSCs in the inner ears and the otoprotective effects of MSCs in the noise-induced hearing loss of rats. Human embryonic stem cell-derived MSCs (ES-MSCs) were systematically administered via the tail vein in adult rats. Eight-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated to the control (n = 8), ES-MSC (n = 4), noise (n = 8), and ES-MSC+noise (n = 10) groups. In ES-MSC and ES-MSC+noise rats, 5 × 105 ES-MSCs were injected via the tail vein. In noise and ES-MSC+noise rats, broadband noise with 115 dB SPL was exposed for 3 h daily for 5 days. The hearing levels were measured using auditory brainstem response (ABR) at 4, 8, 16, and 32 kHz. Cochlear histology was examined using H&E staining and cochlear whole mount immunofluorescence. The presence of human DNA was examined using Sry PCR, and the presence of human cytoplasmic protein was examined using STEM121 immunofluorescence staining. The protein expression levels of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF), poly (ADP-ribose) (PAR), PAR polymerase (PARP), caspase 3, and cleaved caspase 3 were estimated. The ES-MSC rats did not show changes in ABR thresholds following the administration of ES-MSCs. The ES-MSC+ noise rats demonstrated lower ABR thresholds at 4, 8, and 16 kHz than the noise rats. Cochlear spiral ganglial cells and outer hair cells were more preserved in the ES-MSC+ noise rats than in the noise rats. The Sry PCR bands were highly detected in lung tissue and less in cochlear tissue of ES-MSC+noise rats. Only a few STEM121-positivities were observed in the spiral ganglial cell area of ES-MSC and ES-MSC+noise rats. The protein levels of AIF, PAR, PARP, caspase 3, and cleaved caspase 3 were lower in the ES-MSC+noise rats than in the noise rats. The systemic injection of ES-MSCs preserved hearing levels and attenuated parthanatos and apoptosis in rats with noise-induced hearing loss. In addition, a tiny number of transplanted ES-MSCs were observed in the spiral ganglial areas.

Downregulated miRNAs associated with auditory deafferentation and compensatory neural plastic changes following single-sided deafness in the inferior colliculi of rats

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Deafferentation and compensatory neural plastic changes in the inferior colliculus (IC) have been suggested following single-sided deafness (SSD). We explored related miRNA changes in the IC of SSD rats using miRNA microarray analyses.

METHODS

Eight-week-old rats were divided into control and SSD rats (n = 8 for each group). SSD rats underwent right-side cochlear ablation surgery, with the IC harvested two weeks post-surgery. miRNA microarray analysis was performed using GeneChip miRNA 4.0, microarray (Affymetrix Inc.). miRNAs whose expression levels differed between SSD and control rats with a fold-change ≥1.5 and P < 0.05 were examined using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Target genes of differentially expressed miRNAs were predicted using TargetScan software. The pathways related to predicted target genes were analyzed. mRNA levels of predicted target genes were estimated using qRT-PCR.

RESULTS

The expression of miR-15b-5p, miR-202-5p, and miR-212-3p was lower in the contralateral (left) IC of SSD rats than that of control rats. In SSD rats, miRNA expression levels in the contralateral IC were 0.45-, 0.25-, and 0.50-fold lower for miR-15b-5p, miR-202-5p, and miR-212-3p, respectively (P < 0.05). The expression of predicted target genes (Spred1, Rasa1, Lsm11, and Srsf1) was higher in the contralateral IC of SSD rats than in control rats. The targets were predicted to be related with cleavage of growing transcripts in the termination region, mitogen-activated protein kinase family signaling cascades, RAF/AMP kinase cascade, regulation of RAS by GTPase activating proteins (GAPs), and RNA polymerase II transcription termination. For ipsilateral ICs, miR-425-3p, miR-199a-5p, and miR-134-3p showed lower expressions in SSD rats than in control rats, which were 0.55-, 0.61-, and 0.69-fold lower, respectively (P < 0.05). The expression of predicted target genes (Atp2b2, Grin2b, Foxp1, Ztbt20, Zfp91, and Strn) was higher in the ipsilateral IC of SSD rats; the regulation of synaptic plasticity, cAMP signaling pathway, metal ion binding, and calcium ion transport can be associated with these target genes.

CONCLUSION

Adult rats with unilateral auditory deprivation showed miRNA changes in the IC. The contralateral IC showed decreased miRNA expression predicted to be related to MAPK and RAS signaling, whereas the ipsilateral IC revealed decreased miRNA expression predicted to be associated with synaptic plasticity and calcium ion transport.

Differential Expression of miRNAs and Their Predicted Target Pathways in Cochlear Nucleus Following Chronic Noise Exposure in Rats

Several recent preclinical studies have reported that dynamic changes in miRNA expression contribute to hearing function. This study aims to investigate miRNA expression changes in the cochlear nuclei (CN) of rats following chronic noise exposure. Eight-week-old rats (n = 14) were exposed to noise for 4 weeks. The control rats (n = 14) were raised under identical conditions without noise. Two months after noise exposure, the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was examined, and the cochlea and CN were harvested. In the CN, the expression levels of arc, neurocan, and brevican were measured (n = 6 per group). Furthermore, the expression levels of miRNAs and their predicted target genes were measured in the CN (n = 8 per group). ABR thresholds were elevated after 4 weeks of noise exposure, which were maintained for 3 months. In CN, the protein expression of arc and brevican was higher in the noise-exposed group than in the control group (0.95 [standard deviation (SD) = 0.53] vs. 3.19 [SD = 1.00], p < 0.001 for arc and 1.02 [SD = 0.10] vs. 1.66 [SD = 0.24], p < 0.001 for brevican). The noise-exposed rats exhibited lower expression levels of miR-758-5p, miR-15b-5p, miR-212-3p, miR-199a-5p, and miR-134-3p than the control rats (all p < 0.001). The AMPK signaling pathway was predicted to be regulated by these miRNAs. The predicted target genes AKT3, SIRT1, and PRKAA1 were highly expressed in noise-exposed rats. In CN of noise-exposed rats, the miRNAs of miR-758-5p, miR-15b-5p, miR-212-3p, miR-199a-5p, and miR-134-3p were reduced and related to AMPK signaling including AKT3 and SIRT1 expression. These modulation of signaling pathways could mediate the increased expression of brevican in the CN of noise-exposed rats.

Lateralization Pattern of the Weber Tuning Fork Test in Longstanding Unilateral Profound Hearing Loss: Implications for Cochlear Implantation

The Weber tuning fork test is a standard otologic examination tool in patients with unilateral hearing loss. Sound should typically lateralize to the contralateral side in unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. The observation that the Weber test does not lateralize in some patients with longstanding unilateral deafness has been previously described but remains poorly understood. In the present study, we conducted a retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients with unilateral profound hearing loss (single-sided deafness or asymmetric hearing loss) for at least ten years. In this patient cohort, childhood-onset unilateral profound hearing loss was significantly associated with the lack of lateralization of the Weber tuning fork test (Fisher’s exact test, p < 0.05) and the absence of tinnitus in the affected ear (Fisher’s exact test, p < 0.001). The findings may imply a central adaptation process due to chronic unilateral auditory deprivation starting before the critical period of auditory maturation. This notion may partially explain the poor outcome of adult cochlear implantation in longstanding single-sided deafness. The findings may suggest a role for the Weber test as a simple, quick, and economical tool for screening poor cochlear implant candidates, thus potentially supporting the decision-making and counseling of patients with longstanding single-sided deafness.

Pravastatin Administration Alleviates Kanamycin-Induced Cochlear Injury and Hearing Loss

The effect of statins on aminoglycoside-induced ototoxicity is controversial. This study aimed to explore the role of pravastatin (PV) in kanamycin-induced hearing loss in rats. Adult rats were intraperitoneally treated with 20 mg/kg/day of kanamycin (KM) for 10 days. In the PV- and PV + KM-treated rats, 25 mg/kg/day of PV was intraperitoneally administered for 5 days. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds were measured before and after drug treatment using a smartEP system at 4, 8, 16, and 32 kHz. Cochlear changes in poly ADP-ribose (PAR) polymerase (PARP), PAR, and caspase 3 were estimated using Western blotting. PV administration did not increase the ABR thresholds. The KM-treated rats showed elevated ABR thresholds at 4, 8, 16, and 32 kHz. The PV + KM-treated rats demonstrated lower ABR thresholds than the KM-treated rats at 4, 8, and 16 kHz. The cochlear outer hair cells and spiral ganglion cells were relatively preserved in the PV + KM-treated rats when compared with that in the KM-treated rats. The cochlear expression levels of PARP, PAR, and caspase 3 were higher in the KM-treated rats. The PV + KM-treated rats showed lower levels of PARP, PAR, and caspase 3 than the KM-treated rats. PV protected cochleae from KM-induced hearing loss in rats. The regulation of autophagy and apoptosis mediated the otoprotective effects of PV.

The role of diffusion tensor imaging in idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss: is it significant?

Purpose

To assess the role of diffusion tensor imaging metrics in the evaluation of the microstructural integrity of the central auditory tract in patients with idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), and to compare these patients with healthy controls.

Material and methods

This prospective study, which was conducted upon 30 subjects (21 males, 9 females; age range from 16 to 65 years, mean age 45years) with SNHL proven by audiometric tests. Ten age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers were included as a control group. Patients (n = 30) and volunteers (n = 10) underwent conventional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging of the brain. Both fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity (MD) of 3 points along the acoustic tract (inferior colliculus, lateral lemniscus and superior olivary nucleus) were measured bilaterally in all patients and correlated with controls.

Results

Mean fractional anisotropy (FA) values were reduced bilaterally at the superior olivary nucleus and/or lateral lemniscus and more significantly at the inferior colliculus of subjects with SNHL in comparison to the volunteers. In patients of unilateral SNHL, similar results were obtained in the contralateral side when compared to controls with statistically significant difference at the 3 regions (p = 0.001). No significant changes were noticed in the MD parameters either in patient or control groups.

Conclusions

The FA value was a valuable non-invasive biomarker in evaluating the subtle microstructural abnormalities of the central auditory tract in idiopathic SNHL and correlated well with hearing impairment.

MicroRNA Dysregulation in the Hippocampus of Rats with Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

Although hippocampal changes due to noise-induced hearing loss have been suggested, little is known about the miRNA levels due to these hippocampal changes. Three-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into noise and control groups (n = 20 per group). The noise group rats were exposed to white Gaussian noise (115 dB SPL, 4 hours per day) for three days. One day after noise exposure, the hippocampi of rats were harvested and miRNA expressions were analyzed using the Affymetrix miRNA 4.0 microarray (n = 6 per group). The predicted target genes of each miRNA were retrieved, and the pathways related to the predicted target genes were analyzed. miR-758-5p, miR-210-5p, miR-370-5p, miR-652-5p, miR-3544, miR-128-1-5p, miR-665, miR-188-5p, and miR-874-5p expression increased in the hippocampal tissue of the noise group compared to that in the control group. The overlapping predicted target genes included Bend4, Creb1, Adcy6, Creb5, Kcnj9, and Pten. The pathways related to these genes were the estrogen signaling pathway, vasopressin-regulated water reabsorption, thyroid hormone synthesis, aldosterone synthesis and secretion, insulin secretion, circadian entrainment, insulin resistance, cholinergic synapse, dopaminergic synapse, cGMP-PKG signaling pathway, cAMP signaling pathway, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, TNF signaling pathway, and AMPK signaling pathway. miR-448-3p, miR204-5p, and miR-204-3p expression decreased in the hippocampal tissue of the noise group compared to that in the control group. The overlapping predicted target genes of these three miRNAs were Rps6kas, Nfactc3, Rictor, Spred1, Cdh4, Cdh6, Dvl3, and Rcyt1b. Pathway analysis suggested that the Wnt signaling pathway is related to Dvl3 and Nfactc3. Noise-induced hearing loss dysregulates miR-758-5p, miR210-5p, miR370-5p, miR-652-5p, miR-3544, miR-128-1-5p, miR-665, miR-188-5p, miR-874-5p, miR-448-3p, miR-204-5p, miR-204-3p, and miR-140-5p expression in the hippocampus. These miRNAs have been predicted to be associated with hormonal, inflammatory, and synaptic pathways.

Widespread plasticity of cognition-related brain networks in single-sided deafness revealed by randomized window-based dynamic functional connectivity

As an extreme type of partial auditory deprivation, single-sided deafness (SSD) has been demonstrated to lead to extensive neural plasticity according to multimodal neuroimaging studies. Among them, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) offers valuable information on functional connectivities (FCs). However, most previous SSD rs-fMRI studies assumed that the extracted FC remains stationary during the entire fMRI scan and neglected dynamic functional activities. Existing fixed window-based dynamic FC analysis also ignores dynamic functional activities under different temporal terms. Additionally, due to the cost constraints of using MRI machines, using data-driven methods for unbiased hypothesis investigations may require more effective sample data augmentation techniques. To tackle these challenges and problems together, in this study, we proposed a dynamic window with a random length and position to extract participants' dynamic characteristics under different temporal terms and to extract more information from the dataset. Then, we proposed a nodal efficiency-based correlation matrix to describe the relationships of synergism between regions as features and applied a linear support vector machine (SVM) model to learn the importance of the features, which helped to identify SSD patients and healthy controls. A total of 68 participants (including 23 with left SSD, 20 with right SSD and 25 healthy controls) were enrolled. Our proposed approach with a random window showed clear improvement compared with traditional static and fixed window-based dynamic FC by using the linear SVM model. FCs related to the frontoparietal, somatomotor, dorsal attention, limbic and default mode networks played significant roles in differentiating SSD patients from healthy controls. Additionally, FCs between the somatomotor and frontoparietal networks made the greatest contribution to the classification model. Regarding brain regions, FCs related to the superior frontal gyrus, superior parietal lobule, superior temporal gyrus, amygdala, and orbital gyrus played significant roles. These findings suggest that networks and regions related to higher-order cognitive functions showed the most significant FC alterations in SSD, which may represent a compensatory collaboration of cognitive resources in SSD.

Postmortem neuroimaging: Temporal and spatial sensitivity of manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) and impact of Mn2+ uptake

Magnetic resonance imaging data collection and analysis have been challenges in the field of auditory neuroscience. Recent studies have addressed these concerns by using manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI). Basic challenges for in vivo application of MEMRI in rodents includes how to set inclusion criteria for adequate Mn²⁺ uptake and whether valid data can be collected from brains postmortem. Since brain Mn²⁺ uptake is complete within 2-4 h and clearance can take 2-4 weeks, one assumption has been that Mn²⁺-enhanced R1 values continue to reliably reflect the degree of Mn²⁺-uptake for some indeterminate time after death. To address these issues, the impact of death on R1 values was determined in rats administered Mn²⁺ and rats that were not. Images of auditory nuclei were collected at fixed intervals from rats before and after death for up to 10 h postmortem. By taking a ratio of pituitary and muscle T1-W intensities (P/M), a reliable quantitative method for assessing adequate brain Mn²⁺ uptake was created and suggest that P/M ratios should be adopted to objectively measure the quality of the Mn²⁺ injection. Postmortem R1 values decreased in all brain regions in both the After Mn²⁺ and No Mn²⁺ groups. However, the time-course of postmortem changes in R1 was dependent on brain region and degree of Mn²⁺ uptake. Thus, postmortem R1 values not only differ after death, but vary with time and across brain regions. Postmortem R1 values in unfixed brain tissue, including the auditory nuclei, should be interpreted with caution.

Changes in the Gene Expression Profiles of the Inferior Colliculus Following Unilateral Cochlear Ablation in Adult Rats

This study aimed to explore gene expression changes in the inferior colliculus (IC) after single-sided deafness (SSD). Forty 8-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Twenty rats underwent right-side cochlear ablation, and IC tissues were harvested after 2 weeks (SSD 2-week group). Twenty rats underwent a sham operation and were sacrificed after 2 weeks (control group). Both sides of the IC were analyzed using a gene expression array. Pathway analyses were performed on genes that were differentially expressed compared with their levels in the control group. The expression levels of genes involved in the candidate pathways were confirmed using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Among the genes with ≥ 1.5-fold changes in expression levels and P < 0.05, there were 7 and 9 genes with increased and decreased expression, respectively, in the ipsilateral IC and 10 and 12 genes with increased and decreased expression, respectively, in the contralateral IC. The pathway analysis did not identify significantly related pathway. In the bilateral analysis, a total of 14 genes were ≥ 1.3-fold downregulated in both the ipsilateral and contralateral IC in the SSD 2-week group compared with their expression in the control group. Pathway analyses of these 14 genes included 7 genes, namely, amine compound solute carrier (Slc)5a7; Slc18a3; Slc6a5; synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2C (Sv2c); S100 calcium binding protein A10 (S100a10); a gene with sequence similarity to family 111, member A (Fam111a); and peripherin (Prph), that were related to the acetylcholine neurotransmitter release cycle, SLC transporters, and the neurotransmitter release cycle pathways. RT-PCR showed reduced expression of Slc5a7, Sv2c, and Prph in the contralateral IC and Slc18a3 and Slc6a5 in the ipsilateral IC of the SSD 2-week group compared with that in the control group.

Effect of acute noise trauma on the gene expression profile of the hippocampus

Background

This study aimed to investigate the changes in the expression of hippocampal genes upon acute noise exposure.

Methods

Three-week-old Sprague–Dawley rats were assigned to control (n = 15) and noise (n = 15) groups. White noise (2–20 kHz, 115 dB sound pressure level [SPL]) was delivered for 4 h per day for 3 days to the noise group. All rats were sacrificed on the last day of noise exposure, and gene expression in the hippocampus was analyzed using a microarray. Pathway analyses were conducted for genes that showed differential expression ≥ 1.5-fold and P ≤ 0.05 compared to the control group. The genes included in the putative pathways were measured using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR).

Results

Thirty-eight upregulated genes and 81 downregulated genes were identified. The pathway analyses revealed that upregulated genes were involved in the cellular responses to external stimuli and immune system pathways. qRT-PCR confirmed the upregulation of the involved genes. The downregulated genes were involved in neuronal systems and synapse-related pathways, and qRT-PCR confirmed the downregulation of the involved genes.

Conclusions

Acute noise exposure upregulated the expression of immune-related genes and downregulated the expression of neurotransmission-related genes in the hippocampus.

Single-sided Deafness Leads to Changes in Vesicular Synaptic Transporters and Matrix Metalloproteinase 9 in the Primary Auditory Cortex

Changes in perineuronal nets (PNNs) after hearing loss were described in previous studies. The present study aimed to examine how single-sided deafness (SSD) affects the expression of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transporters and PNNs in the primary auditory cortex (A1). Sprague-Dawley rats (8-week-old females, n = 30) were divided into three groups: (1) the SSD 2-week group (n = 10), (2) the SSD 4-week group (n = 10), and (3) the 4-week control group (n = 10). The expression levels of vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (VGLUT1), VGLUT2, vesicular GABA transporter (VGAT), and genes related to PNNs were measured using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The A1 was immunostained for VGLUT1, glutamate acid decarboxylase (GAD) 67, neurocan, aggrecan, brevican, and Wisteria floribunda agglutinin (WFA). The expression levels of VGLUT1, VGLUT2, and VGAT were elevated in the A1 on the ipsilateral side in the SSD groups compared with those in the control groups. Aggrecan expression was elevated in the A1 on the contralateral side in the SSD 2-week group. The SSD groups had elevated expression levels of metalloproteinase (MMP) 9 on the contralateral side. The presynaptic glutamatergic and GABAergic transporters were increased in the A1 on the ipsilateral side after induction of SSD. Changes in the cortical auditory nervous system accompanied changes in the PNNs and their degradation enzymes MMP9 and MMP14.

Auditory Cortical Plasticity and Reorganization in Rats With Single-Sided Deafness During Early Developmental Period

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to examine the serial change of sound-specific auditory cortical activation patterns in age-matched normal hearing (NH) and young single-sided deafness (YSSD) rats to understand the critical period that influences a benefit of a binaural hearing.

METHOD

Experiments were performed on the age-matched 64 Sprague-Dawley rats; NH group = 45 rats, and YSSD group = 19 rats. NH rats were evaluated the multi-unit neural activities from the age of post-14 days (P14ds) to P73ds by week interval. For YSSD group, left-side cochlear ablations were done at the age of P10ds, and multineural recordings were implemented at the post-deafening (PD) 2 weeks (W), PD4W, PD6W, and PD8W, with age matching. After craniotomy, tungsten wire-based 16-channel microelectrode array was inserted to the surface of the auditory cortex. Gaussian white sound stimulation was introduced to the right ear every 500 ms, and analyses were performed of the Peri-stimulus time histogram. The parameters, including peak latency, peak amplitude, total responsive area, and index of contralaterality, were evaluated.

RESULTS

In NH group, larger peak amplitude and total responsive area and shorter peak latency of the contralateral hemisphere to sound stimulation were observed in all ages. Interestingly, YSSD group demonstrated that total reactive area in the contralateral side was significantly smaller than that in the ipsilateral side at PD2W and PD4W, indicating the disappearance of contralateral dominance within PD4W. Subsequently, monaural stimulation from the hearing ear exclusively activated the contralateral hemisphere at PD6W and PD8W.

CONCLUSION

Early onset of unilateral deafening leads to the alternation of contralateral dominance in the early period, replaced by faster and massive reorganization toward the ipsilateral cortex. But, gradual adaptation in the contralateral side was exclusively observed. Given the short critical period in the young SSD model, early intervention may be crucial for the development of binaural hearing if SSD occurs early in life.
