Manipulation of Nonradiative Process Based on the Aggregation Microenvironment to Customize Excited-State Energy Conversion

ConspectusNonradiative processes with the determined role in excited-state energy conversion, such as internal conversion (IC), vibrational relaxation (VR), intersystem crossing (ISC), and energy or electron transfer (ET or eT), have exerted a crucial effect on biological functions in nature. Inspired by these, nonradiative process manipulation has been extensively utilized to develop organic functional materials in the fields of energy and biomedicine. Therefore, comprehensive knowledge and effective manipulation of sophisticated nonradiative processes for achieving high-efficiency excited-state energy conversion are quintessential. So far, many strategies focused on molecular engineering have demonstrated tremendous potential in manipulating nonradiative processes to tailor excited-state energy conversion. Besides, molecular aggregation considerably affects nonradiative processes due to their ultrasensitivity, thus providing us with another essential approach to manipulating nonradiative processes, such as the famous aggregation-induced emission. However, the weak interactions established upon aggregation, namely, the aggregation microenvironment (AME), possess hierarchical, dynamic, and systemic characteristics and are extremely complicated to elucidate. Revealing the relationship between the AME and nonradiative process and employing it to customize excited-state energy conversion would greatly promote advanced materials in energy utilization, biomedicine, etc., but remain a huge challenge. Our group has devoted much effort to achieving this goal.In this Account, we focus on our recent developments in nonradiative process manipulation based on AME. First, we provide insight into the effect of the AME on nonradiative process in terms of its steric effect and electronic regulation, illustrating the possibility of nonradiative process manipulation through AME modulation. Second, the distinct enhanced steric effect is established by crystallization and heterogeneous polymerization to conduct crystallization-induced reversal from dark to bright excited states and dynamic hardening-triggered nonradiative process suppression for highly efficient luminescence. Meanwhile, promoting the ISC process and stabilizing the triplet state are also manipulated by the crystal and polymer matrix to induce room-temperature phosphorescence. Furthermore, the strategies employed to exploit nonradiative processes for photothermy and photosensitization are reviewed. For photothermal conversion, besides the weakened steric effect with promoted molecular motions, a new strategy involving the introduction of diradicals upon aggregation to narrow the energy band gap and enhance intermolecular interactions is put forward to facilitate IC and VR for high-efficiency photothermal conversion. For photosensitization, both the enhanced steric effect from the rigid matrix and the effective electronic regulation from the electron-rich microenvironment are demonstrated to facilitate ISC, ET, and eT for superior photosensitization. Finally, we explore the existing challenges and future directions of nonradiative process manipulation by AME modulation for customized excited-state energy conversion. We hope that this Account will be of wide interest to readers from different disciplines.

Recyclable Solid-Solid Phase Change Materials with Superior Latent Heat via Reversible Anhydride-Alcohol Crosslinking for Efficient Thermal Storage

Solid-solid phase change materials (SSPCMs) with crosslinked polymer structures have received sustained interest due to their remarkable shape stability, enabling their application independently without the need for encapsulation or supporting materials. However, the crosslinking structure also compromises their latent heat and poses challenges to their recyclability. Herein, a novel strategy harnessing the internal-catalyzed reversible anhydride-alcohol crosslinking reaction to fabricate SSPCMs with superior latent heat and exceptional dual recyclability is presented. Easily accessible anhydride copolymers (e.g., propylene-maleic anhydride alternating copolymers), provide abundant reactive anhydride sites within the polymer matrix; polyethylene glycol serves as both the grafted phase change component and the crosslinker. The resulting SSPCMs attain a peak latent heat value of 156.8 J g-1 which surpasses all other reported recyclable crosslinked SSPCMs. The materials also exhibit certain flexibility and a tunable tensile strength ranging from 6.6 to 11.0 MPa. Beyond that, leveraging the reversible anhydride-alcohol crosslinks, the SSPCMs demonstrate dual recyclability through bond-exchange remolding and reversible-dissociation-enabled dissolving-recrosslinking without any reactive chemicals. Furthermore, by integrating solar-thermal conversion fillers like polydopamine nanoparticles, the potential of the system in efficient conversion, storage, and release of solar energy is highlighted.

Tunable Red Clusteroluminescence Polymers Prepared by a Simple Heating Process

Clusteroluminescence (CL) has drawn much attention in recent years. However, the design of red emission clusteroluminogens (CLgens) with tunable CL is still in its infancy. Herein, we report a simple heating process to prepare red emission poly(maleic anhydride-alt-vinyl acetate) (PMV) derivatives with a tunable maximum emission wavelength between 620 and 675 nm. First, heating above the glass transition temperature (T_g) would promote the movement of polymer chains and facilitate the formation of clusters in both solid and solution states. Then, heating beyond the decomposition temperature at which vinyl acetate converts into C═C is favorable to the formation of new clusters and large through-space conjugation among subgroups in polymer chains. Their synergistic effects realize the adjustable emission wavelength and higher quantum yield of polymers. Additionally, low-cost and eco-friendly core-shell PMV particles are prepared as agricultural light conversion agents and exhibit great compatibility with polyethylene.

Synthesis and Application of Fluorescent Polymer Micro- and Nanoparticles

Fluorescent polymer particles have witnessed an increasing interest in recent years, owing to their fascinating physicochemical properties as well as wide-ranging applications. In this review, the state-of-the-art research progress of fluorescent polymer particles in the past five years is summarized. First, the synthesis protocols for fluorescent polymer particles, including emulsion polymerization, precipitation polymerization, dispersion polymerization, suspension polymerization, nanoprecipitation, self-assembly, and post-polymerization modification, are presented in detail. Then, the applications of the resulting beguiling particles in anticounterfeiting, chemical sensing, and biomedicine, are illustrated. Finally, the challenges and opportunities that exist in the field are pointed out. This review aims to offer important guidance and stimulate more research attention to this rapidly developing field.

Super-adsorbent microspheres based on a triallyl isocyanurate-maleic anhydride copolymer for the removal of organic pollutants from water

Owing to the frequent occurrence of diclofenac sodium (DS) in fresh aquatic environments and its potential toxicity towards living organisms, the effective removal of DS has attracted worldwide attention. Herein, a green and efficient strategy to fabricate crosslinked microspheres with interconnected mesoporous structures and abundant adsorption active sites was developed. With this strategy, triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC)-maleic anhydride (MAH) copolymer microspheres (TMs) with a diameter of 1.19-1.35 μm were first prepared by self-stabilized precipitation (2SP) polymerization, and the TMs possess a large amount reactive anhydride groups (62.5-71.8 mol%), a specific surface area of 51.6-182.4 m² g^-1 and a mesoporous structure (average pore size: 3.4-3.8 nm). Then the TMs were further functionalized with polyethylenimine (PEI) to give rise to cationic microspheres (Cat-TMs), which showed excellent adsorption performance to DS with a rapid adsorption rate (reached equilibrium within 30 min), a very high equilibrium adsorption capacity (1421 mg g^-1) and excellent recyclability. The pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model were a good fit for the adsorption kinetic and isotherm process, respectively. Furthermore, due to the high cation density (4.291 mmol g^-1) and excellent pH buffer capacity of Cat-TMs, the adsorption capacity can be maintained at a high level within the pH range of 6-10. The regenerated Cat-TMs showed only a slight loss (<5%) in the adsorption capacity even after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles. In short, Cat-TMs can be considered as a highly promising adsorbent for the rapid and ultra-efficient removal of anionic organic contaminants and have significant potential to be applied in wastewater treatment.

Precipitation Polymerization: A Powerful Tool for Preparation of Uniform Polymer Particles

Precipitation polymerization (PP) is a powerful tool to prepare various types of uniform polymer particles owing to its outstanding advantages of easy operation and the absence of any surfactant. Several PP approaches have been developed up to now, including traditional thermo-induced precipitation polymerization (TRPP), distillation precipitation polymerization (DPP), reflux precipitation polymerization (RPP), photoinduced precipitation polymerization (PPP), solvothermal precipitation polymerization (SPP), controlled/‘‘living’’ radical precipitation polymerization (CRPP) and self-stabilized precipitation polymerization (2SPP). In this review, a general introduction to the categories, mechanisms, and applications of precipitation polymerization and the recent developments are presented, proving that PP has great potential to become one of the most attractive polymerization techniques in materials science and bio-medical areas.

Three-dimensional protein microarrays fabricated on reactive microsphere modified COC substrates

Fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) surface structures for the high density immobilization of biomolecules is an effective way to prepare highly sensitive biochips. In this work, a strategy to attach polymeric microspheres on a cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) substrate for the preparation of a 3D protein chip was developed. The COC surface was firstly functionalized by the photograft technique with epoxy groups, which were subsequently converted to amine groups. Then monodisperse poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PSM) copolymer microspheres were prepared by self-stabilized precipitation polymerization and deposited as a single layer on a modified COC surface to form a 3D surface texture. The surface roughness of the COC support undergoes a significant increase from 1.4 nm to 37.1 nm after deposition of PSM microspheres with a size of 460 nm, and the modified COC still maintains a transmittance of more than 63% at the fluorescence excitation wavelengths (555 nm and 647 nm). The immobilization efficiency of immunoglobulin G (IgG) on the 3D surface reached 75.6% and the immobilization density was calculated to be 0.255 μg cm^-2, at a probe protein concentration of 200 μg mL^-1. The 3D protein microarray can be rapidly blocked by gaseous ethylenediamine within 10 minutes due to the high reactivity of anhydride groups in PSM microspheres. Immunoassay results show that the 3D protein microarray achieved specific identification of the target protein with a linear detection range from 6.25 ng mL^-1 to 250 ng mL^-1 (R² > 0.99) and a limit of detection of 8.87 ng mL^-1. This strategy offers a novel way to develop high performance polymer-based 3D protein chips.

Core-Shell Fluorescent Polymeric Particles with Tunable White Light Emission Based on Aggregation Microenvironment Manipulation

White-light emitting polymers (WLEPs) based on aggregation microenvironment-sensitive aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) have aroused great interest in lighting and optoelectronic devices. Herein, we developed a novel strategy to construct WLEP particles via a stepwise self-stabilized precipitation polymerization of two emission-complementary AIEgens under core-shell engineering, where the AIE characteristics and FRET process of core-shell fluorescent polymeric particles (CS-FPPs) could be modulated by altering aggregation microenvironment under swelling and shrinking of polymers, facilitating the tunable white light emission of CS-FPPs. Furthermore, such tuning could be fast realized in the solid state, thus demonstrating the potential in anti-counterfeiting. This work proved the significance of aggregation microenvironment on emission of luminogens, guiding the development of high-efficiency emission-tunable materials.

Prevent or Cure-The Unprecedented Need for Self-Reporting Materials

Self-reporting smart materials are highly relevant in modern soft matter materials science, as they allow for the autonomous detection of changes in synthetic polymers, materials, and composites. Despite critical advantages of such materials, for example, prolonged lifetime or prevention of disastrous material failures, they have gained much less attention than self-healing materials. However, as diagnosis is critical for any therapy, it is of the utmost importance to report the existence of system changes and their exact location to prevent them from spreading. Thus, we herein critically review the chemistry of self-reporting soft matter materials systems and highlight how current challenges and limitations may be overcome by successfully transferring self-reporting research concepts from the laboratory to the real world. Especially in the space of diagnostic self-reporting systems, the recent SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic indicates an urgent need for such concepts that may be able to detect the presence of viruses or bacteria on and within materials in a self-reporting fashion.

Self-Stable Precipitation Polymerization Molecular Entanglement Effect and Molecular Weight Simulations and Experiments

In this paper, we developed a reactive molecular dynamics (RMD) scheme to simulate the Self-Stable Precipitation (SP) polymerization of 1-pentene and cyclopentene (C5) with maleic anhydride (MAn) in an all-atom resolution. We studied the chain propagation mechanism by tracking the changes in molecular conformation and analyzing end-to-end distance and radius of gyration. The results show that the main reason of chain termination in the reaction process was due to intramolecular cyclic entanglement, which made the active center wrapped in the center of the globular chain. After conducting the experiment in the same condition with the simulation, we found that the distribution trend and peak value of the molecular-weight-distribution curve in the simulation were consistent with experimental results. The simulated number average molecular weight (Mn) and weight average molecular weight (Mw) were in good agreement with the experiment. Moreover, the simulated molecular polydispersity index (PDI) for cyclopentene reaction with maleic anhydride was accurate, differing by 0.04 from the experimental value. These show that this model is suitable for C5–maleic anhydride self-stable precipitation polymerization and is expected to be used as a molecular weight prediction tool for other maleic anhydride self-stable precipitation polymerization system.

Inhibitory activities of indolizine derivatives: a patent review

INTRODUCTION

Indolizines are structural isomers with indoles. Although several indole-based commercial drugs are available in the market, none of the indolizine-based drugs are available up-to-date. Natural and synthetic indolizines have a wide-range of pharmaceutical importance such as antitumor, antimycobacterial, antagonist, and antiproliferative activities. This prompted us to search and collect all possible data about the pharmacological importance of indolizine to open an avenue to the researchers in exploring more medicinal applications of such biologically important compounds.

AREAS COVERED

The current review article covers the advancements in the biological and pharmacological activities of indolizine-based compounds during the last decade. The covered areas of this work involved anticancer, anti-HIV-1, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-tubercular, larvicidal, anti-schizophrenia, CRTh2 antagonist's activities in addition to enzymatic inhibitory activity.

EXPERT OPINION

The discovery of indolizine drugs will be a major breakthrough as compared with their widely available drug-containing indole isosteres. Major work collected here was focused on anticancer, anti-tubercular, anti-inflammatory, and enzymatic inhibitory activities. The SAR study of the reported biologically active indolizines is summarized throughout the review whenever highlighted to the rationale the behavior of inhibitory action. Several indolizines with certain functions provided great enhancement in the therapeutic activities comparing with reference drugs.

In Situ Investigation of Dynamic Silver Crystallization Driven by Chemical Reaction and Diffusion

Rational synthesis of materials is a long-term challenging issue due to the poor understanding on the formation mechanism of material structure and the limited capability in controlling nanoscale crystallization. The emergent in situ electron microscope provides an insight to this issue. By employing an in situ scanning electron microscope, silver crystallization is investigated in real time, in which a reversible crystallization is observed. To disclose this reversible crystallization, the radicals generated by the irradiation of electron beam are calculated. It is found that the concentrations of radicals are spatiotemporally variable in the liquid cell due to the diffusion and reaction of radicals. The fluctuation of the reductive hydrated electrons and the oxidative hydroxyl radicals in the cell leads to the alternative dominance of the reduction and oxidation reactions. The reduction leads to the growth of silver crystals while the oxidation leads to their dissolution, which results in the reversible silver crystallization. A regulation of radical distribution by electron dose rates leads to the formation of diverse silver structures, confirming the dominant role of local chemical concentration in the structure evolution of materials.
