Electro-Fenton mineralization of real textile wastewater by micron-sized ZVI powder anode

The diverse compositions and complex nature of the textile wastewater make it imperative to find an economical and suitable degradation pathway. The degradation of real textile wastewater on a novel heterogeneous electro-Fenton system was carried out with a composite anode of magnetically fixed micron ZVI coupling with a Ti/RuO₂-IrO₂ sheet. The influences of different variables such as mZVI dosage, H₂O₂ amount, applied voltage and pH value on both total organic carbon and chemical oxygen demand removal efficiencies and energy consumption were investigated. The optimized parameters were simultaneously verified by using electrochemical workstation Tafel curves and Nyquist plots. The optimal operating conditions for evaluating the wastewater treatment were H₂O₂ dosage of 0.10 mol·L^-1, applied voltage of 5.0 V, mZVI amount of 1.0 g·L^-1 and initial pH value of 3.0. The high TOC and COD removal efficiencies of 92.44 and 82.84% could be achieved simultaneously in 60 min, respectively. XRD, XPS and SEM-EDS were used to investigate the interaction between the pollutant and the mZVI. GC-MS analysis was performed on untreated and treated wastewater to determine the degradation of pollutants in dyeing wastewater during the electro-Fenton process and to effectively propose a suitable degradation mechanism for this system.

Iron Phosphide Precatalyst for Electrocatalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B Dye and Removal of Escherichia coli from Simulated Wastewater

Electrocatalysis using low-cost materials is a promising, economical strategy for remediation of water contaminated with organic chemicals and microorganisms. Here, we report the use of iron phosphide (Fe2P) precatalyst for electrocatalytic water oxidation; degradation of a representative aromatic hydrocarbon, the dye rhodamine B (RhB); and inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. It was found that during anodic oxidation, the Fe2P phase was converted to iron phosphate phase (Fe2P-iron phosphate). This is the first report that Fe2P precatalyst can efficiently catalyze electrooxidation of an organic molecule and inactivate microorganisms in aqueous media. Using a thin film of Fe2P precatalyst, we achieved 98% RhB degradation efficiency and 100% E. coli inactivation under an applied bias of 2.0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode in the presence of in situ generated reactive chlorine species. Recycling test revealed that Fe2P precatalyst exhibits excellent activity and reproducibility during degradation of RhB. High-performance liquid chromatography with UV-Vis detection further confirmed the electrocatalytic (EC) degradation of the dye. Finally, in tests using Lepidium sativum L., EC-treated RhB solutions showed significantly diminished phytotoxicity when compared to untreated RhB. These findings suggest that Fe2P-iron phosphate electrocatalyst could be an effective water remediation agent.

Elimination of basic blue 9 by electrocoagulation coupled with pelletized natural dead leaves (Sapindus mukorossi) biosorption

Elimination of basic blue 9 (BB-9), a cationic textile dye, by electrocoagulation coupled with biosorption exploiting pelletized natural dead leaves (PNDL) of Sapindus mukorossi, an economic alternative biosorbent, was investigated. The experimental runs were conducted in a laboratory-scale hybrid reactor loaded with Al electrodes, aeration spargers and PNDL packed twin suspended buckets. The pelletized adsorbents offer key advantages of good mechanical stability, lesser clogging risk, and easy disengagement as compared to powdered adsorbents. The parameters of current density, pH, PNDL dose, and initial dye concentration were studied for the decolorization and COD removal efficiency. The experimental results revealed that up to 99.9% decolorization and 90.01% COD removal efficiency achieved after 8 min at optimum condition of current density (j)=20.27 mA/cm², pH = 9, PNDL dose = 6 g/L, and initial dye concentration = 50 mg/L. The BB-9 elimination followed the first-order kinetics with K₁=0.318 min^-1 and R²=0.997. The results revealed the potential of PNDL as a feasible biosorbent with the effective performance of the coupled process.
