Revisiting the HO●-initiated oxidation of L-proline amino acid in the aqueous phase: influence of transition metal ions

The oxidation of L-proline (Pro) by HO^● radical in water and the influence of transition metal ions on this process has been revisited by using the density functional theory (DFT) method at the M05-2X/6-311 + + G(3df,3pd)//M05-2X/6-311 + + G(d,p) level of theory at the temperature of 298.15 K. The main reactive sites of the HO^●-initiated oxidation of Pro via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions are at the β- and γ-carbon, with the branching ratios being 44.6% and 39.5%, respectively. The overall rate constant at 298.15 K is 6.04 × 10⁸ M^-1 s^-1. In addition, Pro tends to form stable complexes with both Fe and Cu ions via the -COO functional group of dipole-salt form. The most stable Cu(II)-Pro complexes have high oxidant risks in enhancing the HO^● formation in the presence of reducing agents. Besides this, the high oxidation state metal complexes, i.e. Fe(III)-Pro and Cu(II)-Pro, may be oxidized by HO^● radical via HAT reactions but with a lower rate constant than that of free-Pro. By contrast, the low oxidation state metal complexes (i.e. Fe(II)-Pro and Cu(I)-Pro) have higher oxidation risks than the free ligands, and thus, the complexation enhances the oxidation of Pro amino acid.

Molecular Design of Novel Chemicals for Iron Sulfide Scale Removal

Scale deposition is a pertinent challenge in the oil and gas industry. Scales formed from iron sulfide are one of the troublous scales, particularly pyrite. Moreover, the use of biodegradable environmentally friendly chemicals reduces the cost compared to the conventional removal process. In this work, the chelating abilities of four novel chemicals, designed using the in silico technique of density functional theory (DFT), are studied as potential iron sulfide scale removers. Only one of the chemicals containing a hydroxamate functional group had a good chelating ability with Fe2+. The chelating strength and ecotoxicological properties of this chemical were compared to diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), an already established iron sulfide scale remover. The new promising chemical surpassed DTPA in being a safer chemical and having a greater binding affinity to Fe2+ upon optimization, hence, a better choice. The presence of oxime (-NHOH) and carbonyl (C=O) moieties in the new chemical showed that the bidentate form of chelation is favored. Moreover, the presence of an intramolecular hydrogen bond enhanced its chelating ability.

In situ synthesis of nitrogen site activated cobalt sulfide@N, S dual-doped carbon composite for a high-performance asymmetric supercapacitor

Cobalt sulfides with high theoretical capacity are considered as potential electrodes for supercapacitors (SCs). However, the insufficient reactive sites and low electrical conductivity of bulky cobalt sulfides restrict their applications. Here, we proposed an efficient approach for in situ formation of nitrogen site activated cobalt sulfide@N, S dual-doped carbon composite (CS@NSC) by vulcanizing the cobalt-glutamine complex (CG) precursor in a tube furnace. The effects of the molecular structure and calcination temperature of CG precursors on the morphology, structure and electrochemical performance of CS@NSC were studied. The designed CS@NSC-2 exhibited a specific capacity of 593 C g^-1 at the current density of 1 A g^-1 and good cyclic stability with 88.7% retention after 2000 cycles. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was fabricated by CS@NSC-2 (positive electrode) and activated carbon (AC) (negative electrode), which delivered ultra-high energy density of 67.8 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 400 W kg^-1 and possessed 83.1% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles. The eco-friendly method was also suitable for synthesizing nickel sulfide. This work may provide an innovative horizon for the in situ formation of active sites in electrode materials.
