Nigella sativa Oil Mouth Rinse Improves Chemotherapy-Induced Oral Mucositis in Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Comparing the efficacy of a novel mucoadhesive patch containing Nigella sativa 10% with triamcinolone 0.1% in patients with erosive-atrophic oral lichen planus: A pilot study

OBJECTIVE

This study evaluates the efficacy of a novel mucoadhesive patch containing Nigella sativa 10% extract compared to triamcinolone 0.1% in alleviating symptoms and reducing lesion severity in patients with erosive-atrophic oral lichen planus.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

A pilot study comprising two groups, each with 10 patients, was conducted. The intervention group received mucoadhesive patches containing N. sativa 10% extract, while the control group received triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% patches. Pain and burning intensity, measured through visual analog scale, and lesion severity based on the Thongprasom scale were assessed weekly for 4 weeks. Descriptive records were kept for side effects and patient satisfaction.

RESULTS

Pain and burning intensity decreased in both groups throughout the sessions, with the N. sativa group showing a greater reduction than the triamcinolone group. The reduction in burning intensity within each group was significant (p < .001), and there was a significant difference between groups only in the second session (p = .045). The overall difference between groups was not significant (p > .05). Lesion severity also decreased significantly in both groups (p < .001), with a significant difference between groups observed in the third session (p = .043) and overall throughout the study (p = .006).

CONCLUSION

The use of N. sativa extract in mucoadhesive patches was as effective as corticosteroids in reducing pain, burning, and lesion severity in patients with oral lichen planus, with N. sativa showing superior results in some sessions. Notably, no significant complications were observed with N. sativa use, making it a promising treatment option for lichen planus.

Comparative Clinical Study of the Effect of Nigella Sativa Oil on Soft Tissue Healing and Inflammation Reduction Compared to Eugenol in the Context of Dry Socket

Research background Dry socket is one of the most common complications occurring after the extraction of a permanent tooth, but despite its high incidence, there is no established treatment for this condition. Nigella sativa oil has anti-inflammatory properties and enhances wound healing. Thus, we have decided to conduct a study to evaluate the efficacy of Nigella sativa oil in the context of dry sockets.  Aim of the study This study aims to evaluate the effect of a Nigella Sativa oil dressing compared with an Eugenol dressing for the treatment of dry sockets in terms of accelerating soft tissue healing and reducing the intensity of inflammation.  Materials and methods A total of 36 patients (19 males, 17 females), ranging between 20 and 50 years, 40 sockets with Alveolar osteitis randomized into 20 sockets for each group. In the first group, Eugenol with a Gelfoam carrier was used, in the second group, Nigella Sativa oil with a Gelfoam carrier was used and after copious irrigation with normal saline in both groups. Soft tissue healing and the degree of inflammation were monitored on the third (T1) and seventh (T2) days.  Results The results of our study showed clinical and statistical superiority in favor of the Nigella Sativa oil group compared to the Eugenol group at time T2, where the P-value was less than 0.05.  Conclusions Within the limits of our study, we found that Nigella Sativa oil led to better healing of soft tissues and reduced the intensity of inflammation in the context of dry socket, and was superior in effectiveness to Eugenol, and we recommend its use for the treatment of dry socket.

Effect of Nigella sativa L. supplementation on inflammatory and oxidative stress indicators: A systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled clinical trials

AIMS

The objective of the present study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the effects of Nigella sativa L. supplementation on the circulating inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, including C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondialdehyde (MDA).

METHODS

Systematic search was performed up to March 2020 using PubMed, Scopus, and ISI web of science databases. Two reviewers independently assessed study eligibility, extracted data, and evaluated methodological quality of included primary studies. Statistical heterogeneity was assessed using I-square (I²) statistic. Data were pooled by using the random-effect model and standardized mean difference (SMD) was considered as the summary effect size.

RESULTS

Twelve trials were identified to be suitable for our meta-analysis. The pooled results using random effects model indicated that Nigella sativa supplementation significantly reduced CRP (SMD: -0.35; 95% CI: -0.59, -0.12, P < 0.001, I² = 10.5%) and MDA concentrations (SMD: -0.56; 95% CI: -0.98, -0.15, P < 0.001, I² = 64.7%). Moreover, Nigella sativa supplementation increased TAC (SMD: 0.48; 95% CI: 0.09, 0.87, P = 0.01, I² = 65.6%) levels; however, it did not affect TNF-α (SMD: -0.35; 95% CI: -0.70, 0.01, P = 0.05, I² = 58.2%).

CONCLUSION

Nigella sativa supplementation is associated with improved inflammation and oxidative status. Additional prospective studies are recommended using higher supplementation doses and longer intervention period.
