Abstract
Abstract
Background
Acute acquired comitant esotropia induced by excessive digital device usage, especially smartphones (SAACE), has been increasing over the past few years. One suggested mechanism is convergence spasm induced by excessive near work, with refraining from digital device use considered to be an effective method for decreasing the degree of esodeviation. However, if symptoms persist and are untreated over time, recovery becomes more difficult. The present study evaluated the effects of topical cycloplegics on persistent SAACE untreated for over 1 year.
Methods
Patients with sustained SAACE that was untreated for over 1 year were evaluated. Digital device usage was discouraged and a topical cycloplegic, 0.4% tropicamide, was prescribed at bedtime. After obtaining informed consent, the 14 out of 23 enrolled patients who agreed to eye drop administration were defined as the study group, with the others serving as the controls. After a 3-month follow-up, patients who elected to undergo surgery were analyzed as the surgery group. Changes in esotropia angles, stereoacuity and diplopia complaints were evaluated after a 3-month follow-up.
Results
Esotropia angles decreased and stereoacuity improved after a 3-month treatment in the study group (P < 0.01). Diplopia disappeared in 13 patients (92.9%, totally disappeared or disappeared when using glasses with built-in prisms). Among 11 patients with untreated esotropia ranging from 1–3 years, decreases in esotropia angles were correlated to untreated esotropia duration (near: R = -0.6; distance: R = 0.7; both P < 0.05). Esotropia angles in the control group exhibited a tendency to increase while stereoacuity tended to deteriorate after the 3-month follow-up. As diplopia did not disappear in any patients, 7 elected to undergo surgery and were enrolled as the surgery group. While esotropia angles decreased in the study group, they were lower than the surgery group (P < 0.01), but higher than the control group (P < 0.01). Stereoacuity was worse in the control versus the study and surgery groups (both P < 0.05).
Conclusion
Results suggest short-acting topical cycloplegics are effective in SAACE patients with long untreated periods. Decreases in esotropia angles were negatively correlated to untreated esotropia duration, which suggests the necessity of early treatment.

Abstract
We investigated a commercial low-coherence interferometer (LenStar LS 900 optical biometer) in measuring young rhesus monkey ocular dimensions. Ocular biometry data obtained using a LenStar and an A-scan ultrasound instrument (OPT-scan 1000) from 163 rhesus monkeys during 20-348 days of age were compared by means of coefficients of concordance and 95% limits of agreement. Linear regression was employed to examine and analyze the inter-instrument discrepancies. In young rhesus monkeys, the test-retest reliability of the LenStar was equal to or exceeded that of A-scan ultrasound (intraclass correlation = 0.86 to 0.93). The inter-instrument agreement was strong for vitreous chamber depth and axial length (coefficient of concordance = 0.95 and 0.86, respectively) and moderate for anterior chamber depth and lens thickness (coefficient of concordance = 0.74 and 0.63, respectively). The LenStar systematically underestimated ocular dimensions when compared to A-scan ultrasound (mean magnitude of difference = 0.11-0.57 mm). This difference could be minimized using linear calibration functions to equate LenStar data with ultrasound data. When this method was applied, the values between instruments were in excellent absolute agreement (mean magnitude of difference = 0.004-0.01 mm). In conclusion, the LenStar reliably measured ocular dimensions in young monkeys. When an appropriate calibration function is applied, the LenStar can be used as a substitute for A-scan ultrasonography.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of age and cycloplegia on the morphology of the crystalline lens using a swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) system. SETTING Hospital. DESIGN Prospective cross-sectional study. METHODS The parameters including anterior chamber depth (ACD), the radii of curvature of the anterior and posterior surface of the crystalline lens (ALR and PLR), lens thickness (LT), lens equatorial diameter (LED), and lens vault (LV) were quantified by the SS-OCT before and after cycloplegia. The paired t test was used to compare the parameters before and after cycloplegia. A multivariate linear regression model was built to analyze the association between the parameters/cycloplegia-induced changes and age, while adjusting for the effect of axial length, refractive status, and sex. RESULTS 76 individuals (age range, 18 to 86 years) were recruited. The ALR and ACD were negatively correlated with age (P ≤ .002), and the LT, LV, and LED were positively correlated with age (P ≤ .004). In participants younger than 60 years, the ALR and ACD significantly increased, whereas the LV and LT significantly decreased after cycloplegia (all P < .001). With aging, cycloplegia-induced differences of ALR (P = .001) and ACD (P = .014) significantly decreased, and of LT (P < .001), LT (P < .001), and LV (P = .001) significantly increased. CONCLUSIONS The crystalline lens morphology measured by the SS-OCT revealed steepening anterior surface and increasing equatorial diameter with age. Cycloplegia caused a significant change of anterior surface morphology in participants younger than 60 years, and this effect diminished with age.

Abstract
In this paper, we assessed the short-term effects of 0.01% atropine eye drops on anterior segment parameters by performing ocular biometry using a swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography system (AS-OCT). We recruited 17 healthy volunteers (10 men and 7 women aged 24–35 years) with no history of eye disease. Participants without accommodative demand demonstrated significant mydriasis 1 h after the atropine instillation (4.58 ± 0.77 to 5.41 ± 0.83 mm). Pupil diameters with a 5 diopter (D) accommodative stimulus at 1 h (4.70 ± 1.13 mm) and 24 h (4.05 ± 1.06 mm) after atropine instillation were significantly larger than those at baseline (3.71 ± 0.84 mm). Barring pupil diameter, no other biometric parameters significantly changed at any point in time after atropine instillation without accommodative demand. However, with an accommodative stimulus, anterior chamber depth (ACD) at 1 h and posterior curvature of the lens at 1 and 24 h were both significantly larger than those before atropine instillation. Using AS-OCT, we detected a slight decrease in the accommodation response of ocular biometric components evoked by 0.01% atropine instillation. Morphologically, our measurements suggested a change in the ACD and horizontal radius of the lens’ posterior surface curvatures due to the subtle reduction of accommodation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the surge in the number of cataract surgeries, there is limited information available regarding the influence of pupil dilation on predicted postoperative refraction and its comparison with recommended various intraocular lens power calculated using the different parameters. We used three different IOL power calculation formulas: Barrett Universal II (Barrett) (5-variable formula), Haigis (3-variable formula), and SRK/T (2-variable formula), in order to investigate the potential effect of pupil dilation on the predicted postoperative refraction (PPR) and recommended intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation. METHODS This retrospective study included 150 eyes. All variables were measured and calculated using a ZEISS IOL Master 700. The following variables were measured before and after dilation: anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), white-to-white (WTW). PPR and recommended IOL power were calculated by Barrett, Haigis, and SRK/T IOL calculation formulas. The change in each variable before and after dilation, and the correlations between all changes were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Spearman's rank-order correlation test, respectively. RESULTS The mean absolute change (MAC) in PPR before and after dilation was found to be highest in the Barrett formula. Significant differences were found between each MAC (P < 0.0001). Significant changes were observed before and after dilation in ACD and LT (P < 0.0001), but not in WTW. Using the Barrett and Haigis formulas, there was a significant positive correlation between the change in PPR and change in ACD (P < 0.0001), and a negative correlation between change in PPR and change in LT (P < 0.0001). The correlations were strongest with the Barret formula followed by the Haigis, particularly in terms of LT. Changes in PPR determined by the Barrett formula also demonstrated a significant positive correlation with changes in WTW (P = 0.022). The recommended IOL power determined using Barrett and Haigis changed before and after dilation in 23.3 and 19.3% cases respectively, while SRK/T showed no change. CONCLUSIONS In terms of PPR and recommended IOL power, pupil dilation influenced mostly the Barrett formula. Given the stronger correlation between the changes in PPR when using Barrett and the changes in ACD, LT, and WTW, changes in ACD, LT, and WTW significantly affect how dilation influences the Barrett formula. Determining how dilation influences each formula and other variables is key to improving the accuracy of IOL calculations.

Abstract
Purpose We analyzed changes in the crystalline lens during accommodation and the effects of cycloplegics by swept-source anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). Materials and Methods Twenty healthy volunteers (7 males and 13 females, aged 22–34 years), with no history of eye disease except for refractive errors, were recruited. Biometric parameters, including anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), and anterior and posterior curvature of the lens (ACL and PCL), were measured using AS-OCT (CASIA2). The measurements were performed with or without an accommodative demand of 5.0 diopters (D). The same tests were repeated following the topical administration of 1% cyclopentolate or a compounding agent comprising 0.5% tropicamide and 0.5% phenylephrine. Results The AS-OCT system was capable of simultaneous visualization of all optical components of the anterior segment in a single frame. ACD, LAC, and LPC decreased and LT increased significantly during 5.0 D accommodative stimulation in both eyes. Both cyclopentolate and tropicamide/phenylephrine eyedrops led to deeper ACD, thinner LT, and flatter LAC. There were no significant differences in all lens parameters despite having 5.0 D accommodative stimulation in both eyes with cycloplegia. Conclusion Our results suggest that both tropicamide/phenylephrine and cyclopentolate eyedrops have enough cycloplegic effects in young adults.

Abstract
AIM To measure the depths of different regions of the anterior chamber (AC) in healthy Chinese adults, and to explore possible correlations with age or gender. METHODS The AC was imaged by swept-source optical coherence tomography in healthy Chinese adults. The horizontal scan of the right eye was used to measure the anterior chamber depth (ACD) at 199 points. RESULTS A total of 309 images from 309 subjects were analyzed. The ACD values at nearly all locations were negatively correlated with age (all P<0.05), except for ACD1, 2, 198, and 199 (correspond to the iris roots). The mean annual decrease 0.013±0.005 mm/y for all ACDs combined, 0.008±0.004 mm/y for the peripheral region, 0.017±0.003 mm/y for the middle peripheral region, and 0.014±0.001 mm/y for the central region. The mean annual decrease was significantly different among these three regions (P<0.001). The ACD was greater in males than in females (P<0.05). The mean difference in ACD between males and females was 0.081±0.025 mm. CONCLUSION This study showed that optical coherence tomography can be used to measure the ACD of different regions of the AC. We found reductions in ACD with age, although the reduction varied among different points, in healthy Chinese adults.
