Mechanical Degradation of Different Classes of Composite Resins Aged in Water, Air, and Oil

Exposure of Biomimetic Composite Materials to Acidic Challenges: Influence on Flexural Resistance and Elastic Modulus

Acidic conditions of the oral cavity, including soft drinks and cariogenic bacteria, represent a damage for restorative biomimetic composite materials. The aim of this study is to assess the influence of two different acidic challenges on the flexural strength and elastic modulus of five composites: x-tra fil (Group 1, XTF), GrandioSO x-tra (Group 2, GXT), Admira Fusion x-tra (Group 3, AFX), VisCalor bulk (Group 4, VCB), and Enamel Plus HRi (Group 5, EPH). Thirty samples for each group were randomly divided and assigned to three different treatments: storage in distilled water as the controls (subgroups 1a–5a), 3 weeks distilled water + 1 week Coca-Cola (subgroups 1b-5b), and 4 weeks Coca-Cola (subgroups 1c–5c). For each subgroup, the flexural strength and elastic modulus were measured using an Instron universal testing machine, and data were submitted to statistical analysis. Considering subgroups B, no material showed a significant difference in the flexural strength with the controls (p > 0.05), whereas for subgroups C, only GXT and VCB showed significantly lower values (p < 0.05). AFX reported the lowest flexural strength among the materials tested. As regards the elastic modulus, no material showed a significant variation after acidic storages when compared with the respective control (p > 0.05). AFX and EPH reported the lowest elastic modulus compared to the other materials. All composites tested showed adequate flexural properties according to the standards, except for AFX. This biomimetic material, along with EPH, might be indicated for V class (cervical) restorations considering the lowest values of elasticity reported.

Flexural Performance of Direct Resin Composite Restorative Materials Past Expiration Date

Objective  This study' s purpose was to examine the flexural properties of five direct restorative resin composites stored up to 30 months after the expiration date.

Materials and Methods  Ambient-stored materials had pre-expiration date baseline flexure strength values as per ISO 4049 ( n = 20). All materials were used per manufacturer guidelines, photopolymerized on both sides using a LED-based visible light curing unit, and stored in 0.2M phosphate buffered saline. At 24 hours, specimens were stressed to failure in three-point bend at a 0.5 mm/min cross head speed. Additional samples were made at 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24, and 30 months past expiration date. Young’s modulus (flexural) was ascertained using the linear slope of the stress-stain curve.

Statistical Analysis  The mean data was found to contain a non-normal distribution and irregular variance which was compared using Kruskal–Wallis with Dunn’s posthoc testing.

Also, Pearson’s correlation analysis was used to identify possible similar degradation behavior between products within both flexure strength and modulus determinations. A 95% level of confidence (α = 0.05) was used.

Results  Materials maintained similar to baseline flexure strength and modulus for up to 15 months past expiration date with two materials being similar at 30 months. However, clinicians were still advised to follow expiration dates, as resin composite degradation mechanisms are complex and vital constituents might degrade that are not overtly identified by clinical handling characteristics. No dental shelf life standards exist and manufacturers are requested to provide protocol information used in determining shelf life expiration.

Effects of surface coating on the flexural strength of fluoridereleasing restorative materials after water aging for one year

Purpose:

To evaluate the effects of surface coating and one-year water storage on the flexural strength of fluoride-releasing restorative materials.

Materials and methods:

Forty specimens were prepared from each material; GCP Glass Fill (GCP), Amalgomer CR (AHL), Zirconomer (Shofu), Fuji IX GP Capsule (GC), Beautifil II (Shofu), Estelite Σ Quick (Tokuyama) and reliaFIL LC (AHL). The specimens were randomly divided into two groups; surface coated with G-Coat Plus (GC) and uncoated. Each group was subdivided into two groups stored in distilled water at 37◦C for 24 h and 1 year before testing (n=10). The flexural strength was evaluated using three-point bending test according to the ISO 4049:2009 standard using a universal testing machine. After flexural strength test, a cross-section of the coated specimens was evaluated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Results:

A significant increase was observed on the flexural strength of Amalgomer CR, Zirconomer and Fuji IX GP after 24 h when G-Coat Plus was applied (p<0.05). This significant increase was observed on the flexural strength of only Amalgomer CR and Zirconomer after 1 year (p<0.05). The highest flexural strength was obtained with Beautifil II, Estelite Σ Quick and reliaFIL LC after 24 h and 1 year (p<0.05). After 1 year, there was decrease on the flexural strength of the other materials except Beautifil II, Estelite Σ Quick and reliaFIL LC.

Conclusion:

The resin coating improved the flexural strength of some glass ionomer-based materials but the water aging decreased the same physical properties.

Ageing of Dental Composites Based on Methacrylate Resins-A Critical Review of the Causes and Method of Assessment

The paper reviews the environmental factors affecting ageing processes, and the degradation of resins, filler, and the filler-matrix interface. It discusses the current methods of testing materials in vitro. A review of literature was conducted with the main sources being PubMed. ScienceDirect, Mendeley, and Google Scholar were used as other resources. Studies were selected based on relevance, with a preference given to recent research. The ageing process is an inherent element of the use of resin composites in the oral environment, which is very complex and changes dynamically. The hydrolysis of dental resins is accelerated by some substances (enzymes, acids). Bonds formed between coupling agent and inorganic filler are prone to hydrolysis. Methods for prediction of long-term behaviour are not included in composite standards. Given the very complex chemical composition of the oral environment, ageing tests based on water can only provide a limited view of the clinical performance of biomaterial. Systems that can reproduce dynamic changes in stress (thermal cycling, fatigue tests) are better able to mimic clinical conditions and could be extremely valuable in predicting dental composite clinical performance. It is essential to identify procedure to determine the ageing process of dental materials.

The synergistic effects of SrF2 nanoparticles, YSZ nanoparticles, and poly-ε-l-lysin on physicomechanical, ion release, and antibacterial-cellular behavior of the flowable dental composites

Resin-based pit-and-fissure sealants (flowable resin composites) were formulated using bisphenol-A-glycerolatedimethacrylate (Bis-GMA)-triethylene glycol dimethacrylate-(TEGDMA)-diurethanedimethacrylate (UDMA) mixed monomers and multiple fillers, including synthetic strontium fluoride (SrF₂) nanoparticles as a fluoride-releasing and antibacterial agent, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nanoparticles as an auxiliary filler, and poly-ε-l-lysin (ε-PL) as an auxiliary antibacterial agent. Based on the physical, mechanical and initial antibacterial properties, the formulated nano-sealant containing 5 wt% SrF₂, 5 wt% YSZ and 0.5 wt% ε-PL was selected as the optimal specimen and examined for ion release and cytotoxicity. The results showed an average release rate of 0.87 μg·cm^-2·day^-1 in the aqueous medium (pH 6.9) and 1.58 μg·cm^-2·day^-1 in acidic medium (pH 4.0). The maximum cytotoxicity of 20% toward human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) was observed according to the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) cytotoxicity assay and acridine orange staining test. A synergy between SrF₂ nanoparticles and ε-PL exhibited a better antibacterial activity in terms of colony reduction compared to the other samples. However, the inclusion of SrF₂ and ε-PL caused mechanically weakening of the sealants that was partly compensated by incorporation of YSZ nanoparticles (up to 10 wt%).
