Antioxidants of commercial interest from Homalium tomentosum attenuates hepatocellular necrosis: Insights from experimental and computational studies

Homalium tomentosum (Vent.) Benth, is a valuable agroforestry species and has industrial importance high-quality wood is used for malas, the manufacture of matches, and is suitable for making a wide range of articles. Nevertheless, leaves and bark are relatively rich in phenols and flavonoids, used for medicinal purposes. In this study, phenols and flavonoids rich in bio-privileged antioxidants in ethyl-acetate extracted fractions of bark (HTEB), and leaves (HTEL) at 300, and 400 mg/kg were examined in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity in experimental rats. HTEB and HTEL (400) showed improvement in liver structural integrity, but, HTEB400 significantly improved serum (total protein, TP; alkaline phosphatase, ALP; total bilirubin, TB; serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, SGOT, and serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase, SGPT), and hepatic oxidative (catalase, CAT; thiobarbituric acid reactive species, TBARS; reduced glutathione, GSH; superoxide dismutase, SOD), and inflammatory (transforming growth factor, TGF-β; ineterleukin-6, IL-6) biomarkers accompanied by histopathological improvements of the liver. GC-MS analysis of HTEB and HTEL identified 14 and 18 compounds, but physicochemical properties of 3-major antioxidants of HTEB (levoglucosenone, (+)-borneol, α-N-normethadol), and HTEL (2-coumaranone, salicyl alcohol, D-allose) were satisfied for the parameters molecular weight, no. of H-acceptor and H-donor, partition co-efficient (clogP), and topological polar surface area (tPSA) of Lipinski's rule. ADME-Tox properties were directly related to the biological activities of HTEB and HTEL. Molecular docking investigation of α-N-normethadol showed the highest binding energy against TGF-β and IL-6 than other antioxidants. HTEB and HTEL were powerful antioxidant potential, but levoglucosenone, (+)-borneol, and α-N-normethadol of HTEB demonstrated better activities in neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) to preserve cellular membrane integrity in liver cirrhosis as found evidence in restoring the liver inflammatory cytokines. This study confirmed the economic interest of H. tomentosum bark as crude material for the preparation of biobased materials for the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Molecular Mechanism of Cynodon dactylon Phytosterols Targeting MAPK3 and PARP1 to Combat Epithelial Ovarian Cancer: A Multifaceted Computational Approach

Epithelial Ovarian Cancer (EOC) presents a global health concern, necessitating the development of innovative therapeutic strategies to combat its impact. This study was employed to investigate the unexplored therapeutic efficacy of Cynodon dactylon phytochemicals against EOC using a multifaceted computational approach. A total of 19 out of 89 rigorously curated phytochemicals were assessed as potential drug targets via ADMET profiling, while protein-protein interaction analysis scrutinized the top 20 hub genes among 264 disease targets, revealing their involvement in cancer-related pathways and underscoring their significance in EOC pathogenesis. In molecular docking, Stigmasterol acetate showed the highest binding affinity (-10.9 kcal/mol) with Poly [ADP-ribose] polymerase-1 (PDB: 1UK1), while Arundoin and Beta-Sitosterol exhibited strong affinities (-10.4 kcal/mol and -10.1 kcal/mol, respectively); additionally, Beta-Sitosterol interacting with Mitogen-activated protein kinase 3 (PDB: 4QTB) showed a binding affinity of -10.1 kcal/mol, forming 2 hydrogen bonds and a total of 10 bonds with 10 residues. Molecular dynamics simulations exhibited the significant structural stability of the Beta-Sitosterol-4QTB complex with superior binding free energy (-36.61 kcal/mol) among the three complexes. This study identified C. dactylon phytosterols, particularly Beta-Sitosterol, as effective in targeting MAPK3 and PARP1 to combat EOC, laying the groundwork for further experimental validation and drug development efforts.

The Anticoccidial In Vitro Effects and Antioxidant Properties of Several Plants Traditionally Used for Coccidiosis in Togo

Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease that often affects livestock. Identifying plants with inhibitory effects on the development of the parasite could help in finding new natural treatments. This study aimed to evaluate the anticoccidial potentials of extracts from Azadirachta indica leaves (AILs), Combretum micranthum leaves (CMLs), Carica papaya seeds (CPSs), Sarcocephalus latifolius roots (SLRs), and Vernonia amygdalina leaves (VALs). The in vitro anticoccidial efficacy of the extracts was evaluated through oocyst sporulation inhibition and sporozoite viability inhibition assays of Eimeria oocysts. The setup was examined for 72 h (every 24 h) of incubation. The DPPH radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power were used to evaluate the antioxidant potential of the extracts. Among the tested extracts, the SLR, CPS, and AIL extracts exhibited the maximum oocyst sporulation inhibition (75.85 ± 1.21%, 74.53 ± 1.65%, and 71.58 ± 0.24%, respectively) at a concentration of 75 mg/mL of plant extracts against the Eimeria species. The Sarcocephalus latifolius root extract showed the highest radical scavenging capacity (76.25 ± 0.53) and reducing power (86.21 ± 4.28). The biochemical screening of the selected plant extracts revealed the presence of antioxidant compounds such as phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and carbohydrates. The SLR extract contained the highest amounts of phenols (56.11 ± 0.33 µg/mL) and flavonoids (36.65 ± 1.85 µg/mL). In conclusion, the selected hydro-ethanolic extracts from these plants possess excellent anticoccidial and antioxidant activities, which can be attributed to the presence of medicinally important phytochemicals. Further research is needed to identify and isolate the active anticoccidial compounds from these plants, which could be utilized in the development of drugs against coccidiosis.

Head Space Single Drop Micro Extraction Gas Chromatography Flame Ionization Detection (HS-SDME-GC-FID) Method for the Analysis of Common Fatty Acids

Objectives

Post-marketing/surveillance studies show that most of the many vegetable oils that are sold with health-promoting claims or statements with high nutritional values and are beneficial against diseases are off-limits of related monographs/criteria. Defining the oil with a fast, cheap, and efficient analytical method is needed to express fatty acids in any herbal product to authenticate, trace, specify, and classify the content.The majority of the after marketing/surveillance studies shows that most of the many vegetable oils that are sold with health-promoting claims or statements with high nutritional values and are beneficial against diseases are off-limits of related monographs/criteria. Materials and Methods

Here, we define a new simple tool with a headspace single drop microextraction (HS-SDME) method coupled with a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) for the analysis of common fatty acids (FAs) in oils. Linolenic acid, γ-linolenic acid, and linoleic acid in olive oil, thyme oil, and fish oil were determined. Derivatization was performed with 0.2 mL of 2 mol/L KOH in methanol to transfer the FAs of oils into their methyl esters (FAMEs). Then, FAMEs were extracted using a head space single drop, which is 2.0 μL of sodium dodecyl sulfate:1-butanol (1:3, v/v) mixture.

Results

The most suitable extraction condition was that 360 μL of the FAMEs, 2.0 mL vial, 0.07 g NaCl as a salting-out effect, 45 °C extraction temperature, and 35 min extraction time. Nutritional Composition, Mineral Profiling, In Vitro Antioxidant, Antibacterial and Enzyme Inhibitory Properties of Selected Indian Guava Cultivars Leaf Extract

Psidium guajava L. is a small evergreen tree known for its magnificent medicinal and nutritional value. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional profile and in vitro pharmacological potentialities of the different leaf extracts of four cultivars of Psidium guajava namely Surka chitti, Allahabad safeda, Karela, and Lucknow-49. The standard procedures of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) were followed to carry out the nutritional analysis and all of the cultivars recorded the presence of elements at a nominal range. The highest presence of phenols (125.77 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (92.38 mg QE/g) in the methanolic leaf extract of the Karela cultivar was recorded. A wide range of minerals such as sodium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, and boron were recorded with a higher percentage in the Karela cultivar of Psidium guajava. In the enzyme inhibitory assays, Allahabad safeda showed potential inhibition with an IC50 of 113.31 ± 1.07, 98.2 ± 0.66 and 95.73 ± 0.39 μg/mL in α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and tyrosinase inhibition assays, respectively. The strong antioxidant effect was established by Lucknow-49 (IC50 of 74.43 ± 1.86 μg/mL) and Allahabad safeda (IC50 of 78.93 ± 0.46 μg/mL) for ABTS and DPPH assays, respectively. The ethyl acetate and methanolic leaf extracts of the Allahabad safeda cultivar showed better inhibition against Pseudomonas aeruginosa with an MIC of 14.84 and 28.69 µg/mL, respectively. A decent mean zone of inhibition was recorded in methanolic leaf extract that ranged from 21-25 mm in diameter against the tested bacterial strains (Proteus vulgaris, Bacillus subtilis, and P. aeruginosa). This is the first scientific report on the comparative and comprehensive analysis of indigenous guava cultivars to evidently shortlist the elite cultivars with enriched dietary nutrition and biological activities.

Application of Three Compounds Extracted from Cynodon dactylon against Streptococcus mutans Biofilm Formation to Prevent Oral Diseases

Streptococcus mutans bacteria form a biofilm called plaque that causes oral diseases, including tooth decay. Therefore, inhibition of biofilm formation is essential to maintaining good oral health. The health and nutritional benefits of Cynodon dactylon are well documented, but very little is known about its use to treat against oral diseases. The aim of this study was to detect the adhesion strength of the S. mutans bacterial biofilm in 100 cases in the Rajshahi region and evaluate the inhibitory activity of different compound extracts of C. dactylon on the S. mutans bacterial biofilm by determining the composition of isolated compounds using phytochemical analysis. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy confirmed that three specific compounds from C. dactylon were discovered in this study: 3,7,11,15 tetramethyl hexadec-2-4dien 1-o1, compound 3,7,11,15 tetramethylhexadec-2-en-1-o1 from phytol derivatives, and stigmasterol. Results indicated that the compound of 3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-hexadec-2-en-1-ol exhibited higher antibiofilm activities on S. mutans than those of the other compound extracts. A lower level of minimum inhibitory concentration was exposed by 3, 7, 11,15 tetramethyl hexadeca-2-en-1-o1 (T2) on S. mutans at 12.5 mL. In this case, the compound of 3,7,11,15 tetramethyl hexadec 2en-1-o1 was used, and patients showed a mean value and standard error reduced from 3.42 ± 0.21 to 0.33 ± 0.06 nm. The maximum inhibition was (80.10%) in the case of patient no. 17, with a value of p < 0.05 found for S. mutans to which 12.5 μL/mL ethyl acetate extract was applied. From these findings, it may be concluded that C. dactylon extracts can be incorporated into various oral preparations to prevent tooth decay.

The effects of Cynodon dactylon (Poaceae family) and Dolichos biflorus (Fabaceae family) extracts on decreasing size and excretion of kidney and urinary tract stones: a randomized, double-blind controlled trial

OBJECTIVES

Given high and growing prevalence rate of urolithiasis in most societies as well as the problems caused by this issue, it is necessary to apply more cost-effective and safer therapeutic methods, which are accessible for all the individuals worldwide. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate efficacy of herbal medicines named Cynodon dactylon and Dolichos biflorus on solving and excretion of renal and urinary tract stones in patients with urolithiasis.

METHODS

This study included 96 patients with urolithiasis who were randomly allocated into three groups. The first group received the extract of D. biflorus seeds (1,600 mg), the second group received extract of C. dactylon rhizome (1,600 mg) and the third group received placebo for 21 days. In this study, we used an hydroalcoholic extract of D. biflorus and C. dactylon prepared by Soxhlet method. For each patient, the size of the stones, the amount of calcium in the urine, the number of stones excreted and their chemical substance type were measured.

RESULTS

In this study, changes were observed at the significance level in the interventions groups of 1 and 2, and the placebo group in the left kidney, so that changes in size of the stone in left kidney as intergroup were significantly different in these three groups (p=0.02). The mean of changes in stone size in left kidney in the group C. dactylon was 3.78 ± 7.1 and in the group D. biflorus, it was 0.27 ± 0.6.

CONCLUSIONS

A significant difference in the results of this study show that C. dactylon rhizome and D. biflorus seed extracts are able to decrease the size of the stone and can be effective on kidney stones excretion.

Inhibitory Activity of Saussurea costus Extract against Bacteria, Candida, Herpes, and SARS-CoV-2

Medicinal herbs have long been utilized to treat various diseases or to relieve the symptoms of some ailments for extended periods. The present investigation demonstrates the phytochemical profile, molecular docking, anti-Candida activity, and anti-viral activity of the Saussurea costus acetic acid extract. GC-MS analysis of the extract revealed the presence of 69 chemical compounds. The chemical compounds were alkaloids (4%), terpenoids (79%), phenolic compounds (4%), hydrocarbons (7%), and sterols (6%). Molecular docking was used to study the inhibitory activity of 69 identified compounds against SARS-CoV-2. In total, 12 out of 69 compounds were found to have active properties exhibiting SARS-CoV-2 inhibition. The binding scores of these molecules were significantly low, ranging from -7.8 to -5.6 kcal/mol. The interaction of oxatricyclo [20.8.0.0(7,16)] triaconta-1(22),7(16),9,13,23,29-hexaene with the active site is more efficient. Furthermore, the extract exhibited significant antimicrobial activity (in vitro) against Candida albicans, which was the most susceptible microorganism, followed by Bacillus cereus, Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively. On the other hand, its antiviral activity was evaluated against HSV-1 and SARS-CoV-2, and the results showed a significant positive influence against HSV-1 (EC₅₀ = 82.6 g/mL; CC₅₀ = 162.9 g/mL; selectivity index = 1.9). In spite of this, no impact could be observed in terms of inhibiting the entry of SARS-CoV-2 in vitro.

Phytochemical Screening, Antioxidant, and Antimicrobial Activities of Seven Underinvestigated Medicinal Plants against Microbial Pathogens

Background

Plants are a rich source of therapeutic compounds that have tremendous applications in the pharmaceutical industry. This study aimed to identify the phytochemicals present in the seven selected medicinal plants as well as their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

Methods

Phytochemical screening, total phenolic, and flavonoid contents were determined using standard methods. The antioxidant activity of plant extracts was determined using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl (OH), and nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging assays. The antimicrobial activity of the plant extracts was determined by the broth microdilution method.

Results

The results of phytochemical analysis showed the presence of phenols, flavonoids, and steroids in all plant extracts. The extract of Psychotria peduncularis showed the highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents (5.57 ± 0.22 mg GAE/g and 1.38 ± 0.06 mg QE/g, respectively). All plant extracts showed very strong antioxidant activity against DPPH and NO radical scavenging with IC50 values ranging from 0.55 to 49.43 µg/mL and 0.65 to 13.7 µg/mL, respectively. The extracts of Tristemma mauritianum and P. peduncularis displayed significant antibacterial activity with MIC values ranging from 16 to 1024 µg/mL. T. mauritianum extract showed bactericidal activity against all tested species. The extracts of Alsophila manianna and P. peduncularis showed significant antifungal activity (MIC = 64 µg/mL) against Candida albicans strain.

Conclusion

The screened extracts of medicinal plants used in our study can be used as potential antioxidant and antimicrobial agents, and resources for the development of new drugs.

Nutritional quality evaluation and proteome profile of forage species of Western Himalaya

Naturally occurring forage species in the high‐altitude pasturelands of Western Himalaya are traditionally being utilized for feeding of livestock. However, the nutritional quality evaluation and validation of their potential as feed for livestock needs to be undertaken. Here, we evaluated proximate compositions, minerals and amino acids (AAs) of five high‐altitude forage species, namely, Festuca kashmiriana L., Medicago sativa L., Trifolium pratense L., Medicago falcate L. and Melilotus indica L. The results revealed that proximate compositions, mineral and AAs varied significantly among the forage species. The carbohydrate, crude protein, moisture content, crude fat, crude fiber, crude ash, total phenol, oil absorption capacity and water absorption capacity were found in the range of 17.44–37.27 mg/100 mg, 3.34–14.71 mg/100 mg, 88.73%–90.72%, 0.98–2.32 mg/100 mg, 11.16–24.16%, 7.71–34.49%, 292.50–488.12 μg/100 mg, 3.91–4.67 g/g and 2.64–3.41 g/g, respectively. Elemental composition showed that calcium was the predominant element among the minerals (13.91–132.05 mg/kg DM) followed by magnesium (4.60–12.92 mg/kg DM), iron (2.04–76.13 mg/kg DM) and zinc (1.07–2.17 mg/kg DM). Furthermore, we found that these high‐altitude forage species are rich in essential AAs like histidine, tryptophan, valine, leucine, phenylalanine and to some extent isoleucine and tyrosine. In addition, these five species showed distinct proteomes but shared a similar functional group. The proteome profiling of these forage species will help to understand the molecular basis of nutritional enrichment and stress tolerance potential against harsh environmental conditions of high altitudes. Overall, we conclude that traditionally used high‐altitude forage species are nutritionally rich and can be recommended as part of the daily nutritive feed for livestock animals.

Synthesis of copper nanoparticles from the aqueous extract of Cynodon dactylon and evaluation of its antimicrobial and photocatalytic properties

The copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) synthesizing potential of Cynodon dactylon aqueous leaf extract and their antibacterial as well as dye degradation potentials were investigated. The synthesized CuNPs was initially characterized by gradual colour change from dark brown to blue in colour and then found absorbance peak at 469 nm. Furthermore, the SEM and DLS analyses showed that biosynthesized CuNPs were spherical in shaped and size ranging from 120 to 129 nm. The FTIR spectrum confirmed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, and phenols, which involved in the reduction, capping, and stabilization of CuNPs. This green synthesized CuNPs also demonstrated remarkable antibacterial activity against the bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. This green synthesized CuNPs exhibited considerable dye degrading potential in the following order as methyl organge > methyl red > Erichrome black T dyes in the presence of sunlight through photocatalytic degradation process. These results conclude that C. dactylon aqueous leaf extract mediated nanoparticles possess remarkable antibacterial and dye degrading potential.

BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF Rubia tinctorum (L) ROOT AND AERIAL PART EXTRACTS THEREOF

In the present study, the phytochemical composition, antioxidant and anti-hemolytic activities of root and aerial part Rubia tinctorum hydromethanolic extracts were investigated. Phytochemical screening reveals the presence of phenol, alkaloids, coumarin, flavonoids, and tannins in both extracts. LC-ESI-MS/MS analysis showed the presence of 15 and 17 components in the root and the aerial part extracts, respectively. The quantitative analysis indicates the richness of root extracts in phenolic compounds (118.38 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (45.29±0.04 mg GAE/g), the aerial part extract has the highest levels in tannins (134.1±0.1 mg GAE/g). Besides, aerial part extracts revealed the highest antioxidant activity for DPPH (83.23 %) and FRAP (1.51±0.22), while the root extract exhibited the highest potential for TAC and antihemolytic activity (61.09 %). Rubia tinctorum contains different active compounds to prevent diseases related to oxidative stress.

LC-HRMS Profiling and Antidiabetic, Antioxidant, and Antibacterial Activities of Acacia catechu (L.f.) Willd

Acacia catechu (L.f.) Willd is a profoundly used traditional medicinal plant in Asia. Previous studies conducted in this plant are more confined to extract level. Even though bioassay-based studies indicated the true therapeutic potential of this plant, compound annotation was not performed extensively. This research is aimed at assessing the bioactivity of different solvent extracts of the plant followed by annotation of its phytoconstituents. Liquid chromatography equipped with high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) is deployed for the identification of secondary metabolites in various crude extracts. On activity level, its ethanolic extract showed the highest inhibition towards α-amylase and α-glucosidase with an IC₅₀ of 67.8 ± 1 μg/mL and 10.3 ± 0.1 μg/mL respectively, inspected through the substrate-based method. On the other hand, the plant extract showed an antioxidant activity of 23.76 ± 1.57 μg/mL, measured through radical scavenging activity. Similarly, ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts of A. catechu showed significant inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus with a zone of inhibition (ZoI) of 13 and 14 mm, respectively. With the LC-HRMS-based dereplication strategy, we have identified 28 secondary metabolites belonging to flavonoid and phenolic categories. Identification of these metabolites from A. catechu and its biological implication also support the community-based usage of this plant and its medicinal value.

Isolation and Antimicrobial Activities of Phytochemicals from Parinari curatellifolia (Chrysobalanaceae)

The widespread use of antimicrobial agents to treat infectious diseases has led to the emergence of antibiotic resistant pathogens. Plants have played a central role in combating many ailments in humans, and Parinari curatellifolia has been used for medicinal purposes. Seven extracts from P. curatellifolia leaves were prepared using serial exhaustive extraction of nonpolar to polar solvents. The microbroth dilution method was used to evaluate antimicrobial bioactivities of extracts. Five of the extracts were significantly active against at least one test microbe. Mycobacterium smegmatis was the most susceptible to most extracts. The methanol and ethanol extracts were the most active against M. smegmatis with an MIC of 25 µg/mL. The hexane extract was the most active against Candida krusei with an MIC of 25 µg/mL. None of the extracts significantly inhibited growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. Active extracts were selected for fractionation and isolation of pure compounds using gradient elution column chromatography. TLC analyses was carried out for pooling fractions of similar profiles. A total of 43 pools were obtained from 428 fractions. Pools 7 and 10 were selected for further isolation of single compounds. Four compounds, Pc4963r, Pc4962w, Pc6978p, and Pc6978o, were isolated. Evaluation of antimicrobial activities of Pc4963r, Pc4962w, and Pc6978p showed that the compounds were most active against C. krusei with MFC values ranging from 50 to 100 µg/mL. Only Pc6978p was shown to be pure. Using spectroscopic analyses, the structure of Pc6978p was determined to be β-sitosterol. The antifungal effects of β-sitosterol were evaluated against C. krusei in vitro and on fabrics. Results showed that β-sitosterol reduced the growth of C. krusei attached to Mendy fabric by 83%. Therefore, P. curatellifolia can be a source of lead compounds for prospective development of novel antimicrobial agents. Further work needs to be done to improve the antifungal activity of the isolated compound using quantitative structure-activity relationships.

Bioengineered gold nanoparticles using Cynodon dactylon extract and its cytotoxicity and antibacterial activities

In this study, simple and green route approach was applied for the synthesis gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) containing an aqueous extract of Cynodon dactylon L. Pers., (C. dactylon). The synthesized AuNPs were characterized using spectral and microscopic analysis. The changes in the color pattern were observed upon synthesis by UV-vis spectrophotometer with a peak of 530 nm. The FT-IR, XRD, SEM, and TEM were used to analyze the crystal nature and morphology of the green synthesized AuNPs. The C. dactylon-loaded AuNPs in different concentrations (0.625-100 μg/ml) were used to assess cytotoxicity activity against MCF-7 cell line and where the IC₅₀ was found to be 31.34 μg/ml by MTT assay. The C. dactylon-AuNPs were significantly increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, DNA fragmentation, and mitochondrial membrane changes observed by dichlorodihydroflurescenin diacetate (DCFH-DA), 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), Rhodamine-123, and acridine orange (AO)/ethidium bromide (EtBr) staining assay. Besides the microbial study revealed that C. dactylon-AuNPs exhibited significant antibacterial activity against clinically isolated pathogenic bacteria such as Enterobacter cloacae, Staphylococus Haemolytics, Staphylococcus petrasii subsp. Pragensis and Bacillus cereus with a zone of inhibition 13, 12, 13 and 12 mm, respectively. It could be concluded that C. dactylon has the ability to be involved in the biosynthesis of AuNPs, and the pharmacological studies proved the promising cytotoxic effect on MCF-7 cell line and pathogenic bacterial species.
