Pharmacists' Knowledge and Practice of Issues Related to Using Psychotropic Medication in Elderly People in Ethiopia: A Prospective Cross-Sectional Study

A Comparison of Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) Between Private- and Government-Sector Pharmacists With Regard to Psychotropic Medications in Riyadh City

Background Pharmacists play a significant role in patient care, and many patients consider them to be their primary source of information regarding medications. Therefore, pharmacists must have an adequate level of knowledge about psychotropic medications. This study aims to assess and compare the levels of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding psychotropic medications in governmental and private-sector pharmacists in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods An observational cross-sectional study was conducted, which included 355 pharmacists (governmental and private sector pharmacists). Each pharmacist was interviewed and asked to answer a structured questionnaire that consisted of four sections: demographic data, knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding psychotropic medications. Results Our findings indicate that the overall knowledge regarding psychotropic medications among private and government-sector pharmacists is insufficient. While 282 (79.4%) had insufficient knowledge, 20.6% of pharmacists had adequate knowledge regarding psychotropic medications, and good knowledge was detected among 29.1% of government-sector pharmacists compared to 18.1% of private-sector pharmacists (P = .033). Our results also revealed that 31.5% of the pharmacists felt comfortable with their knowledge of psychotropic agents. In addition, 18.9% of the pharmacists reported that they received adequate training on psychotropic medications (12.7% of the governmental group versus 20.7% of the private-sector group; P =.048). Conclusion The insufficient knowledge among pharmacists regarding psychotropic medications highlights the importance of providing more training programs and educational courses to improve pharmacists' knowledge about psychotropic medications in Saudi Arabia.

Knowledge and dispensing practice of community pharmacists towards antipsychotic medicines in a Nigerian metropolitan city - a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Antipsychotic drugs are prescription-only-medications which require valid prescriptions before it can be obtained from a pharmacy. On the other hand, community pharmacists in developing countries have sometimes been implicated in over-the-counter dispensing of prescription-only-medications.

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated the accessibility of antipsychotic drugs without prescriptions from community pharmacies, and the factors responsible for the over-the-counter dispensing of antipsychotics by community pharmacists.

METHODS

An exploratory cross-sectional mixed method survey design using pretested structured questionnaires among 119 community pharmacists, simulated patients in 119 community pharmacies, and one-on-one in-depth interview among eleven (11) community pharmacist-owners/superintendent pharmacists were utilized for data collection. The knowledge of the pharmacists on antipsychotics including classification, side effects, and dispensing practices were explored. Qualitative data was analyzed with thematic analysis, while quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics.

RESULTS

Majority of the community pharmacists (87.4%) showed good knowledge of antipsychotics as it relates to the different classes and the side effects peculiar to each class. Antipsychotic medications were dispensed by 85 (71.4%) of community pharmacists without a prescription. One-on-one in-depth interview sessions with community pharmacist owners/superintendent pharmacists demonstrated that community pharmacists are knowledgeable about antipsychotics and their side effects. Reasons given for dispensing this class of drugs without prescription included emergencies, and knowledge of the person as being on the drugs long-term. About 4% pharmacists were adamant on dispensing only with prescription.

CONCLUSION

Community pharmacists in Ibadan metropolis readily dispense antipsychotics without valid prescriptions despite having an optimal knowledge about the negative implications of doing so. This could be due to weak legislation and regulation of drug laws. There is a need for more stringent regulations as well as adequate sensitization about the negative effects of inappropriate dispensing of prescription-only-medications.

Cost-related nonadherence for prescription medications: a cross-sectional study in Jordan

Background: Cost-related nonadherence to medications is a commonly encountered problem posed by many patients, and specifically among elderly patients who use multiple chronic medications. This study aims to explore the prevalence of medication cost-related nonadherence and its predictors in Jordan.Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted between February 2019 and May 2019 in Jordan. The CRN questionnaire was used as a measure to assess the prevalence of cost-related nonadherence. Logistic regression was used to determine predictors of medication cost-related nonadherence.Results: The prevalence rate of CRN was 29.6% (95% CI: 27.0-32.3). Participants who are married or widowed were found to have higher odds of being non-adherent due to medication costs, with an odds ratio of 1.55 (95%CI: 1.19-2.00) and 1.95 (95%CI: 1.20-3.15), respectively. Lower educational level was associated with higher odds of being non-adherent 1.95 (95%CI: 1.25-3.05). Being retired was associated with higher odds of being non-adherent (2.20 (95%CI: 1.49-3.27)).Conclusion: Cost-related nonadherence is a common problem in Jordan and was most prevalent among those with hypertension and diabetes mellitus, low-income, and low levels of education. Our findings could help in developing interventions to improve cost-related medication nonadherence in developing countries.
