Soundwalk path affecting soundscape assessment in urban parks

Introduction

Previous soundscape studies focused on sound perception and acoustic comfort in sampled sites and ignored the characteristics of the experiential process along the paths. Therefore, the effects of soundwalk paths on soundscape assessment should be explored.

Methods

In this study, a typical urban park was selected as a case study. The differences, characteristics, and effects of soundwalk paths on the soundscapes were explored, based on a soundwalk survey and laboratory study.

Results

The results are as follows: first, in the soundwalk, different soundwalk paths in the urban park had significant effects on the perceived extent of individual sound and soundscape assessment. Second, the soundscape assessment was consistent with the peak-end rule. In the laboratory experiments, the peak assessment of soundscape appeared at the end location of the soundwalk paths, it was critical to the overall soundscape assessment. Furthermore, in the soundwalk, the overall perceived extent of individual sound was strongly affected by the perceived extent of dominant sounds at the end location of the soundwalk paths. Third, in the soundwalk, the sound loudness contrast path (noise-quiet/quiet-noise) and sound source contrast path (natural-artificial sound/artificial-natural sound) were compared. In the noise-quiet path, the assessment of acoustic comfort was higher than that in the quiet-noise path, and the assessment of subjective loudness was lower than that in the quiet-noise path (p < 0.01). The subjective loudness of the artificial-natural sound path was lower than that in the natural-artificial sound path (p < 0.05).

Discussion

Thus, the design of the soundwalk paths was expected to enhance visitors' soundscape assessment of urban parks.

An evaluation model for automobile intelligent cockpit comfort based on improved combination weighting-cloud model

Aiming at the comfort evaluation of automobile intelligent cockpit, an evaluation model based on improved combination weighting-cloud model is established. By consulting relevant literature, 4 first-class indexes and 15 second-class indexes, including noise and vibration, light environment, thermal environment and human-computer interaction, are selected to establish a comfort evaluation system. Later the subjective and objective weights obtained by improved Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) are combined by Game Theory. Considering the fuzziness and randomness of the index system, the combination weights obtained by Game Theory are combined with the cloud model. The floating cloud algorithms is used to determine the first-class and second-class index clouds and the comprehensive evaluation cloud parameters. Improvements were made in two commonly used similarity calculation methods, the expectation curve method (ECM) and the maximum boundary curve method (MCM). A new similarity calculation method is defined to optimize the evaluation results and determine the final comfort evaluation grade. Lastly, a 2021 Audi intelligent car under a certain working condition was selected to verify the correctness and rationality of the model using the fuzzy evaluation method. The results show that the cockpit comfort evaluation model based on the improved combination weighting-cloud model can better reflect the comprehensive comfort of automobile cockpit.

An Investigation of the Influence of the Night Lighting in a Urban Park on Individuals’ Emotions

Outdoor urban lighting design is a complex issue. It involves multiple aspects (energy consumption, lighting pollution, aesthetics, and safety) that must be balanced to make sustainable decisions. Although the energy and environmental issues assumed a driving role in the optimization of the urban lighting design, its impact on the psychophysical well-being of individuals has received less attention. Artificial lighting has been shown to add several meanings to an individual’s experience of space: affective (affect, emotion, mood), cognitive (attention, imagination, perception), associative (memory, judgment), and motivational (closeness, openness, communication). Traditionally, studies on the effects of lighting on individuals’ emotions have mainly focused on indoor spaces, while the present study aims to investigate the influence of lighting on individuals’ emotions in an outdoor environment. Participants experienced a simulated urban park through virtual reality. Specifically, the urban park was shown with different combinations of overall illuminance (high vs medium vs low) and correlated colour temperature (CCT) (warm vs intermediate vs cool). For each combination, participants were asked to judge how they felt. In general, results showed that high-intensity cool light made participants more nervous, while warm light made individuals feel more tired and less motivated to explore the park. In contrast, an intermediate CCT at low or medium illuminance impacted individuals positively. Finally, it was found that participants’ mood predicted the impact that park lighting would have on them. These results suggest that assessing the influence of lighting on individuals’ emotions allows the decision-makers to implement the type of artificial lighting that will simultaneously safeguard both the well-being of individuals and the environment.
