Electroacupuncture modulates abnormal brain connectivity after ischemia reperfusion injury in rats: A graph theory-based approach

BACKGROUND

Electroacupuncture (EA) has been shown to facilitate brain plasticity-related functional recovery following ischemic stroke. The functional magnetic resonance imaging technique can be used to determine the range and mode of brain activation. After stroke, EA has been shown to alter brain connectivity, whereas EA's effect on brain network topology properties remains unclear. An evaluation of EA's effects on global and nodal topological properties in rats with ischemia reperfusion was conducted in this study.

METHODS AND RESULTS

There were three groups of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats: sham-operated group (sham group), middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) group, and MCAO/R plus EA (MCAO/R + EA) group. The differences in global and nodal topological properties, including shortest path length, global efficiency, local efficiency, small-worldness index, betweenness centrality (BC), and degree centrality (DC) were estimated. Graphical network analyses revealed that, as compared with the sham group, the MCAO/R group demonstrated a decrease in BC value in the right ventral hippocampus and increased BC in the right substantia nigra, accompanied by increased DC in the left nucleus accumbens shell (AcbSh). The BC was increased in the right hippocampus ventral and decreased in the right substantia nigra after EA intervention, and MCAO/R + EA resulted in a decreased DC in left AcbSh compared to MCAO/R.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study provide a potential basis for EA to promote cognitive and motor function recovery after ischemic stroke.

Continuous Nursing Intervention Based on Network Interactive in Early Diabetic Kidney Disease Patients

Objective

To analyze the effect of continuous nursing intervention based on network interactive platform on improving blood glucose level and self-efficacy in patients with early diabetic kidney disease.

Methods

The control group received basic routine nursing, and the study group received continuous nursing based on the network interactive platform. The blood glucose level, renal function, inflammatory factors, self-efficacy, self-management behavior, nursing efficacy and adverse reactions were compared.

Results

There was no significant difference in baseline data between the two groups. After the application of continuous nursing based on network interactive platform, the blood glucose level and renal function of patients were significantly decreased, and those of the study group were lower than those of the control group. The inflammatory factors in the study group were significantly lower than those in the control group.

Conclusion

In the nursing of patients with early-onset diabetic kidney disease, the application of continuous nursing based on network interactive platform can effectively reduce the level of inflammatory factors, improve the level of blood glucose and renal function, improve the self-efficacy and self-management behavior of patients, and reduce the occurrence of adverse reactions. It is worthy of promotion and application in nursing.

Effect of Yifei-Huoxue Decoction Combined with Tiotropium on Inflammatory Cytokine Levels, Pulmonary Function, and Quality of Life in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Objective

The main objective is to investigate the effect of Yifei-Huoxue decoction combined with tiotropium on the inflammatory cytokine levels, pulmonary function, and quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Methods

Ninety-eight COPD patients who were treated in our hospital from January 2021 to January 2022 were selected as the research objects, and they were divided into reference group (routine treatment) and study group (Yifei-Huoxue decoction combined with tiotropium), with 49 cases in each group. The patients' clinical indexes were compared between the two groups, and the clinical efficacy in the two groups was analyzed.

Results

Compared with the reference group, the study group had remarkably lower inflammatory cytokine levels (including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), C-reactive protein (CRP), and interleukin-6 (IL-6)) after treatment (P > 0.05). In terms of the patients' pulmonary function indexes after treatment, the study group achieved lower forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1), and FEV1/FVC levels compared with the reference group (P < 0.05). Both groups had a lower erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) after treatment compared with that before treatment. However, the intergroup difference in the ESRs after treatment was remarkable, and the study group had a much lower ESR compared with the reference group (P < 0.05). Compared with the reference group, the study group achieved much higher 36-item short form health survey (SF-36) scores in dimensions of general health, physical functioning, social functioning, and mental health after treatment (P < 0.05).

Conclusion

Yifei-Huoxue decoction combined with tiotropium not only enhances the COPD patients' pulmonary function but also decreases their inflammatory levels. Therefore, this treatment is conducive to promoting the COPD patients' recovery and exerts positive effect on improving their quality of life.
