Abstract
AIM: To investigate the expression of CD44 and integrin β1 mRNA in peritoneal lavage fluid and their correlations with the peritoneal metastasis of gastric cancer.
METHODS: The samples of peritoneal lavage fluid were collected during operation from 50 patients with gastric cancer. The expression of CD44 and integrin β1 was detected at mRNA level by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and the examination of peritoneal lavage cytology (PLC) was also performed. All the cases were divided into different groups according to the invasion depth of foci, serosal types, results of PLC, peritoneal metastasis and TNM stages. Then the expression of CD44 and integrin β1 mRNA was compared among various groups.
RESULTS: The expression of CD44 mRNA was closely related to serosal types (F = 4.59, P < 0.05), peritoneal metastasis (t = 2.655, P < 0.05), results of PLC (t = 3.126, P < 0.01) and TNM stages (t = 3.453, P < 0.01). Integrin β1 mRNA expression was significantly higher in patients with peritoneal metastasis than that without metastasis (t = 2.241, P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: The expression of CD44 and integrin β1 mRNA in peritoneal lavage fluid is related to the peritoneal metastasis-related factors and TNM stages of gastric cancer, detection of their levels is helpful to evaluate the progression, prognosis and early diagnosis of gastric cancer.
