Abstract
AIM: To investigate the mRNA and protein expression of SRY-related HMG box 2 (SOX2) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and to analyze their significance.
METHODS: The expression of SOX2 mRNA and protein was detected by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry in 35 cases of normal esophageal mucosa and 84 cases of ESCC, respectively.
RESULTS: The positive rate of SOX2 mRNA expression in normal mucosa tissue was significantly lower than that in ESCC (8.6% vs 46.4%, χ2 = 15.504, P < 0.05). Similar result was obtained for the expression of SOX2 protein (31.4% vs 53.6%, χ2 = 4.862, P < 0.05). The expression of SOX2 mRNA and protein was significantly associated with tumor differentiation, depth of invasion, TNM stage and lymph node metastasis in ESCC (all P < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between the expression of SOX2 mRNA and that of protein in ESCC (γp = 0.399, P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: SOX2 mRNA and protein expression might be associated with invasion of ESCC, implying that SOX2 overexpression may be closely related to the malignant transformation of ESCC.
