¿Qué se puede hacer para prevenir la violencia y el maltrato de los niños con discapacidades?

[Domestic violence and the adolescent that was infected with HIV through vertical transmission: analysis of protection and vulnerability factors]

The scope of this study was to analyze protection and vulnerability factors in physical and psychological domestic violence among adolescents infected with HIV/AIDS through vertical transmission. This group is especially susceptible as they have vulnerability factors such as chronic disease, orphanhood with consequent change of caregivers and impaired body image. The research was conducted in a public hospital. The first stage used the Parent Child Conflict Tactics and the Degree of Psychological Violence Scale to determine what domestic violence occurred. In the second qualitative stage, the adolescents who scored the most or the least for violence in the quantitative instrument were interviewed. The questionnaires and the interviews revealed a high prevalence of physical and psychological violence and abusive domestic dynamics, thereby corroborating the extant literature. In view of the consequences of this kind of violence, it is essential that the health professional should be able to identify violent situations and recognize vulnerability factors and to promote protection factors against ill-treatment.

Situational analysis of poverty and violence among children and youth with disabilities in the Americas an agenda proposal

This article reviews the prevalence of poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean discussing the cycle and culture of poverty, their links to violence and maltreatment among disabled children and youth, from 1990 to 2006. There is a discussion of child maltreatment both of typical and disabled children taking into consideration the disabled child's unique needs, the impact on the family and society and the availability of supports and resources. Finally, an agenda is set forth to address poverty and violence, seeking to diminish the prevalence of maltreatment of all children, but especially children with disabilities. In addition, there is the hope of breaking the cycle of poverty and supporting disabled and marginalized individuals. This agenda speaks to the need for multidisciplinary collaboration as well as collaboration regionally and locally among governmental and non-governmental agencies, advocacy groups and the community at large.

[Social representations of rights and violence in the disability field]

This article presents the analysis of relations and social representations from professionals, leaderships and families about the rights of children and teenagers with disability and violence against them. It is part of a major study which occurred in three Rio de Janeiro's institutions for that population. Its merit is to show up the logic of institutions, professionals and families involved in the special care as an essential part of quality's attention. This study is based on narratives of different actors about the specificity of their work and in group s discussion of difficulty faced in the care they offer, in the interaction among them and with society, and in the view they project into the themes rights of disabled person and the manifestations of violence against them. We took into account a theoretical revision up-to-date related to different visions and perspectives about people with disability, their support and the care they need. We concluded for the need of giving more attention not only for the disabled people, but mainly to families and professionals which take care of them, in order to empower people and programs.
