Abstract
Chemotherapy and radiotherapy resistance are major obstacles in the long-term efficacy of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) treatment. Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is common and has been proposed as an independent predictor of HNSCC recurrence and disease-free survival. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for these negative patient outcomes are unknown. To assess the effects of SHS exposure on cisplatin efficacy in cancer cells, three distinct HNSCC cell lines were exposed to sidestream (SS) smoke, the main component of SHS, at concentrations mimicking the nicotine level seen in passive smokers' saliva and treated with cisplatin (0.01-100 µM) for 48 h. Compared to cisplatin treatment alone, cancer cells exposed to both cisplatin and SS smoke extract showed significantly lower cisplatin-induced cell death and higher cell viability, IC50, and indefinite survival capacity. However, SS smoke extract exposure alone did not change cancer cell viability, cell death, or cell proliferation compared to unexposed control cancer cells. Mechanistically, exposure to SS smoke extract significantly reduced the expression of cisplatin influx transporter CTR1, and increased the expression of multidrug-resistant proteins ABCG2 and ATP7A. Our study is the first to document that exposure to SHS can increase cisplatin resistance by altering the expression of several proteins involved in multidrug resistance, thus increasing the cells' capability to evade cisplatin-induced cell death. These findings emphasize the urgent need for clinicians to consider the potential role of SHS on treatment outcomes and to advise cancer patients and caregivers on the potential benefits of avoiding SHS exposure.

Abstract
This study was aimed to analyze the readability and quality of patient education websites on esophageal cancer. Yahoo!, Google, and Bing search engines were searched using keywords esophageal cancer, esophageal tumor, esophageal tumor, esophageal malignancy, esophageal cancer, esophageal tumor, esophageal tumor, and esophageal malignancy. The first 50 websites resulting in each keyword search were evaluated using validated FRES, LIDA, and DISCERN scores to assess readability, usability, and reliability, and quality of information, respectively. Non-parametric tests were used for statistical analysis. A total of 108 eligible websites were included in the analysis. Thirty (27.8%) out of the 108 eligible web sites had obtained Health on the Net (HON) code certification. The median FRES score of the included websites was 48.25 out of 100 (range: 15.6-70.1). The median LIDA usability and reliability scores were 46.5 out of 54 (range: 22-54) and 39.0 out of 51 (range: 10-51), respectively. The median DISCERN score was 50.5 out of 80 (range: 23-79). A low DISCERN score (≤ 50%) was found in 50% (n = 54) of the websites. The DISCERN score was found to be significantly associated with LIDA usability, reliability, LIDA overall scores (p < 0.001), and HON code certification (p = 0.01). The quality of the websites providing patient-centered information on the Internet ranged between moderate and low with regards to readability, usability, and reliability scores. Better informed decisions on treatment may be facilitated with the access to good quality information online. Therefore, strategies need to be implemented to regulate and standardize websites to provide good quality, accurate information.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in Uygur population is gradually increasing recently. In view of the great diagnostic and prognostic values of cell-free DNAs (cfDNA) detection, this study focus on a liquid biopsy to explore the value of cfDNA mutation in healthy and NSCLC patients in 2 ethnicities. METHODS The concentration and sequencing of cfDNA in NSCLC and healthy subjects was assessed with a standard information analysis procedure, including detection, annotation, and statistical analysis. Gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analyses were conducted to analyze the function of mutant genes and related pathways. Totally, 133 subjects, including 35 Uygur NSCLC patients, 10 Uygur healthy subjects, 63 cases of Han NSCLC patients and 25 Han health control, were admitted to the hospital. RESULTS There were a lower proportion of adenocarcinoma and higher percentage of smoking rate for Uygur patients. For cfDNA level between NSCLC and healthy subjects, Han patients exhibited sharp increase while there was no statistical difference in Uygur population. In addition, the mutation frequency of cfDNA in Han patients (72.6%) was significantly higher than Uygur patients (45.7%). There were 5 gene mutations only found in Han patients and ABCC11 showed a higher mutation frequency in Uygur population as a common one. Finally, Go and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis showed apprent functional enrichments and pathway changes between 2 ethnicities. CONCLUSION There existed distinct distributions of cancer subtypes, smoking proportion, cfDNA level, and mutation patterns between Han and Uygur patients. The results may be a useful tool in NSCLC patients' diagnosis as well as individualized therapy between ethnicities in future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Epidemiological studies carried out on lung cancer have shown varying incidence patterns in Asia. We aimed to examine the trends in lung cancer incidence and patterns in Sri Lanka. METHODS All newly diagnosed lung cancer patients in Sri Lanka during 2001-2010 included in the National Cancer Registry were analysed. Trends in incidence were analysed using the Joinpoint regression software. RESULTS A total of 8482 lung cancer patients (males = 6831, 80.5%, mean age: 60.2 years) were analysed. The WHO age-standardised incidence rate (ASR) has increased from 3.77 per 100,000 in 2001 (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 3.47-4.07) to 5.74 per 100,000 in 2010 (95% CI: 5.38-6.09; a 1.52-fold increase (p < 0.05 for trend), with an estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) of 5.4 (95% CI: 3.9-7.0). The proportional increase in incidence was higher for females [ASR: 1.2 to 2.3, EAPC = 6.8(95% CI: 4.0-9.7)] than males [ASR: 6.6 to 9.55, EAPC = 5.2(95% CI: 3.8-6.6)] and with similar patterns. CONCLUSIONS In Sri Lanka, the incidence of lung cancer has shown as increasing trend with a greater proportional rise in females. Although the observed trends could be partly due to better reporting, the greater increase in females who are generally non-smokers is intriguing. Further studies are required to identify reasons for observed incidence trends in lung cancer in Sri Lanka.

Abstract
It is predicted that 1.8 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed worldwide in 2020; of these, the incidence of lung, colon, breast, and prostate cancers will be 22%, 9%, 7%, and 5%, respectively according to the National Cancer Institute. As the global medical cost of cancer in 2020 will exceed about $150 billion, new approaches and novel alternative chemoprevention molecules are needed. Research indicates that the plants of the Lamiaceae family may offer such potential. The present study reviews selected species from the Lamiaceae and their active compounds that may have the potential to inhibit the growth of lung, breast, prostate, and colon cancer cells; it examines the effects of whole extracts, individual compounds, and essential oils, and it discusses their underlying molecular mechanisms of action. The studied members of the Lamiaceae are sources of crucial phytochemicals that may be important modulators of cancer-related molecular targets and can be used as effective factors to support anti-tumor treatment.

Abstract
While lung cancer has been the leading cause of cancer-related deaths for many years in the United States, incidence and mortality statistics - among other measures - vary widely worldwide. The aim of this study was to review the evidence on lung cancer epidemiology, including data of international scope with comparisons of economically, socially, and biologically different patient groups. In industrialized nations, evolving social and cultural smoking patterns have led to rising or plateauing rates of lung cancer in women, lagging the long-declining smoking and cancer incidence rates in men. In contrast, emerging economies vary widely in smoking practices and cancer incidence but commonly also harbor risks from environmental exposures, particularly widespread air pollution. Recent research has also revealed clinical, radiologic, and pathologic correlates, leading to greater knowledge in molecular profiling and targeted therapeutics, as well as an emphasis on the rising incidence of adenocarcinoma histology. Furthermore, emergent evidence about the benefits of lung cancer screening has led to efforts to identify high-risk smokers and development of prediction tools. This review also includes a discussion on the epidemiologic characteristics of special groups including women and nonsmokers. Varying trends in smoking largely dictate international patterns in lung cancer incidence and mortality. With declining smoking rates in developed countries and knowledge gains made through molecular profiling of tumors, the emergence of new risk factors and disease features will lead to changes in the landscape of lung cancer epidemiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While tobacco exposure is the cause of the vast majority of lung cancers, an important percentage arise in lifetime never smokers. Documenting the precise extent of tobacco induced molecular changes may be of importance. Also, the contribution of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is difficult to assess. METHODS We developed and validated a quantitative method to assess the extent of tobacco related molecular damage by combing the most characteristic changes associated with tobacco smoke, the tumor mutation burden (TMB) and type of molecular changes present in lung cancers. Using maximum entropy (MaxEnt) as a classifier, we developed a F score. F score values >0 were considered to show evidence of tobacco related molecular damage, while values ≤0 were considered to lack evidence of tobacco related molecular damage. Compared to the stated patient tobacco exposure histories, the F scores had sensitivity, specificity and accuracy values of 85-87%. Using this method, we analyzed public data sets of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), lung squamous cell (LUSC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). RESULTS Less than 10% of LUSCs and SCLCs had negative F scores, while 27% to 35% of LUADs had positive scores. The F score showed a highly significant downward trend when LUADs were subdivided into the following categories: ever, reformed ≤15 years, reformed >15 years and never smokers. Most of the examined bronchial carcinoids (a lung cancer type not associated with smoke exposure) had negative F scores. In addition, most LUADs with EGFR mutations had negative F scores, while almost all with KRAS mutations had positive scores. CONCLUSIONS We have established and validated a quantitative assay that will be of use in assessing the presence and degree of smoke associated molecular damage in lung cancers arising in ever and never smokers.

Abstract
More than 50% of women worldwide are exposed to Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS). The impact of ETS on lung cancer remains unclear. Cohort studies since the late 1990s have provided new evidence of female lung cancer risk due to ETS. The objective of this meta-analysis and systematic review was to analyze the association of ETS with female lung cancer risk from 1997 to 2017, organised based on research design. According to our applied inclusion and exclusion criteria, 41 published studies were included. The relative risk (RR) from the cohort studies or odds ratio (OR) from case-control studies were extracted to calculate the pooled risks based on the type of study. The summary risks of ETS were further explored with the modulators of ETS exposure sources and doses. The pooled risks of lung cancer in non-smoking women exposed to ETS were 1.35 (95% CI: 1.17⁻1.56), 1.17 (95% CI: 0.94⁻1.44), and 1.33 (95% CI: 1.17⁻1.51) for case-control studies, cohort studies, and both types of studies, respectively. The summary RR estimate of the cohort studies was not statistically significant, but the RR increased with increasing doses of ETS exposure (p trend < 0.05). Based on the results of this study, ETS might be an important risk factor of female lung cancer in non-smokers.

Abstract
Tobacco smoke contains more than 4000 detectable substances, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nicotine, carbon monoxide and heavy metals, which are considered powerful enzymatic inducers that have notable influence on the efficacy and tolerability of many medications through complex pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions. As a result, adjustments of drug dosages are required in smokers, both if they continue to smoke or if they quit after smoking cessation treatment. The purpose of this review is to examine the main drug interactions with tobacco smoke clinically relevant, with a closer look on patients developing oncologic diseases.
