Diagnosis of pediatric genitourinary embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma by urine cytology: a case report

Urinary cytologic features of primitive neuroectodermal tumor primarily involving the kidney: A case report

Renal primitive neuroectodermal tumor(rPNET) is an extremely rare and distinct entity that can be mistaken for a variety of other round cell tumors. Findings from fine needle aspiration cytology have been reported, but there have been no reports of PNET cytomorphological features in urine cytology specimen. Here, we report a case of PNET characterized by urine cytology. A 24-year-old girl presented with hematuria for half a month. Computed tomography showed a large tumor involving the upper pole of the right kidney. Urinary cytology exhibited highly cellular clusters composed of small, round, atypical cells with little cytoplasm and a high nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio. Following a right nephrectomy, the biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of rPNET. Additionally, immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining of the decolorized liquid-based cytology slide was positive for CD99, further confirming the diagnosis through urine cytology. Our observations suggest that urinary cytology in combination with cytological morphology and immunocytochemistry may be a potentially useful method for the detection of PNET.

An Approach to Nonurothelial Malignancies of the Urinary Bladder in Urine Cytology

Urine cytology is an economical and convenient method of triaging patients who present with urinary symptoms as well as surveying those who have previously been diagnosed with urothelial carcinoma for recurrent or persistent disease. While the vast majority of malignancies diagnosed in urine cytology are urothelial carcinomas, it is important to recognize nonurothelial elements to inform patient prognosis and raise the possibility of involvement by a urothelial carcinoma variant, nonurothelial malignancy of the bladder, or a nonbladder primary, which may alter patient management pathways. As such, becoming familiar with morphologic features of nonurothelial malignancies in urine cytology as well as their related clinical risk factors, radiologic and cystoscopic features, differential diagnostic considerations, and the utility and pitfalls of ancillary tests can facilitate optimal patient care.

Diagnosis of pediatric neuroblastoma by urine cytology: A case report

Neuroblastomas are embryonal tumors arising from the neuronal crest cells of the synaptic nervous system. Findings from aspiration cytology have been reported, but there have been no reports of urine cytology findings. Here, we report a case of pediatric neuroblastoma characterized by urine cytology. A 2-year-old boy presented with abdominal pain, nausea, and loss of appetite. Computed tomography revealed a large tumor in the left suprarenal region with massive infiltration into the kidney. Urinary cytology showed highly cellular clusters composed of small, round, atypical cells with little cytoplasm and high nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio; nuclear molding was also noted in some places. Immunocytochemical staining was positive for synaptophysin and chromogranin A, and neuroblastoma was suggested by urine cytology. A biopsy of the left adrenal tumor later confirmed a diagnosis of poorly differentiated neuroblastoma. Urine cytology may be useful for rapid diagnosis and management of similar cases.

Sarcoma in urine cytology; an extremely rare entity: A report of two cases

Primary sarcomas of the urinary bladder or prostate are extremely rare entities. The rarity and lack of awareness makes it difficult for the cytologists to detect the spindle cell lesions in urine for malignant cytology. The literature available for the detection of urinary tract sarcomas is little. Here, we report the urine cytology findings of two interesting cases of urinary bladder and prostatic leiomyosarcoma.
