Acupuncture May Improve Quality of Life in Menopausal Women: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

The effects of acupressure, laughter yoga, and a mindfulness-based stress reduction program applied to postmenopausal women for menopause symptoms and quality of life

OBJECTIVE

This research was conducted to determine the effects of acupressure, laughter yoga, and a mindfulness-based stress reduction program applied to postmenopausal women for menopause symptoms and quality of life.

METHODS

A randomized controlled design was used. The study was conducted with a total of 146 women, including 41 acupressure, 31 laughter yoga, 37 mindfulness-based stress reduction, and 37 control group women. The women in the acupressure group were administered acupressure twice a week, which accounted for 16 sessions in total. Women in the laughter yoga and mindfulness-based stress reduction groups received a total of eight sessions of the related intervention, which was performed once a week. Study data were collected using a participant information form, the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), and the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life Scale (MENQOL). Descriptive statistics, paired-samples t test, χ2 test, analysis of variance test, and intention to treat analysis were used to analyze the data. Before the intention to treat analysis was performed, the multiple imputation method was employed to deal with missing data.

RESULTS

In the study, it was found that there was a decrease in the MRS total score after the intervention in women in all three intervention groups compared to the control group (P < 0.05). In the laughter yoga group, total MRS scores decreased by 3.16 points (P < 0.05). In the acupressure group, total MRS scores decreased by 5.46 points (P < 0.05). In the mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program group, total MRS scores decreased by 4.65 points (P < 0.05). It was determined that the mean scores of women in the laughter yoga and acupressure groups on all subscales of the MENQOL decreased after the intervention compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The comparison of the MBSR group and the control group showed that there was a decrease only in the psychosocial domain subdimension of the MENQOL (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, it was determined that laughter yoga, acupressure, and MBSR could be effective in reducing menopause symptoms and improving quality of life, although findings require further testing in a rigorously controlled study and in a study with only a single prespecified outcome.

Effectiveness of Moxibustion Combined with Chinese Medicine in the Treatment of Spleen and Stomach Deficiency Cold-Type Gastroparesis: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Objective. To investigate the effectiveness of moxibustion combined with Chinese medicine in the treatment of spleen and stomach deficiency cold-type gastroparesis by meta-analysis and to provide the clinical basis for its treatment. Methods. A computer search of eight databases was performed for published and unpublished randomized controlled trials on moxibustion for spleen and stomach deficiency cold-type stomach pain from domestic and international clinical trial centers. The study was divided into a combination of a moxibustion and Chinese medicine group and a regular Western medicine group, and the outcome indicators were “effective” and “ineffective.” The relative risk (RR) was used as the effect indicator for the dichotomous data, and the meta-analysis was performed using Reviewer Manager 5.4 and Stata17.0 software. Results. A total of 8 randomized controlled studies with 729 patients were included, and all studies were analyzed for comparability of patients’ baseline information, with no statistically significant differences found ( $P>0.05$ ). The meta-analysis results showed that the pooled effect size RR for the eight studies was 1.24 (95% confidence interval 1.16–1.32), and the statistical significance test was Z = 6.69 ( $P<0.05$ ), indicating that the difference was statistically significant. Conclusion. The meta-analysis concluded that the efficacy of moxibustion combined with Chinese medicine for the treatment of spleen and stomach deficiency cold-type gastroparesis was superior to that of regular Western medicine, but more high-quality studies are needed to confirm this finding.

Limitations in functioning in climacteric syndrome: a systematic literature review using the ICF

INTRODUCTION

This study is the first of four preparatory studies in the process to develop an International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Core Set for climacteric syndrome. The aim was to identify perimenopausal and postmenopausal limitations in functioning reported in the scientific literature.

METHODS

A systematic literature review was performed on MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Embase and CINAHL including publications from 2010 to 2020. Meaningful concepts were identified from the included studies and linked to the ICF using standardized linking rules.

RESULTS

From the 6935 unique publications found, 300 articles were randomly selected for abstract screening and 48 studies met the inclusion criteria. From these, 1836 meaningful concepts were identified and linked to 158 different ICF categories. Most of them could be linked to the ICF chapter 'Body Functions'. Emotional, sleep, energy and drive as well as thermoregulatory functions and sensation of pain were addressed in >80% of all publications.

CONCLUSION

Climacteric syndrome involves all four components of the ICF, but the focus of scientific research lies on limitations in body functioning. Limitations in body structures, activities and participation and environmental factors were less frequently assessed. The ICF is a valuable tool to describe the multidimensional phenotype of climacteric syndrome.

Investigation of the role of herbal medicine, acupressure, and acupuncture in the menopausal symptoms: An evidence-based systematic review study

Background

Menopause is an important physiological phenomenon in women's lives. Women's concern about taking the hormone treatment to ease menopausal symptoms is increasing. Over the past decade, the use of complementary and alternative medicine for the treatment of menopausal problems instead of hormone therapy has increased.

Objective

This study aimed to investigate the role of herbal medicine, acupressure, and acupuncture in the menopausal symptoms.

Methods

Data source: related articles were searched from internal scientific databases and external databases of "Web of Scopus, Cochrane, PubMed, Science Direct, Ovid, and Google scholar."

Study Eligibility Criteria

The keywords such as menopause, menopausal symptoms, complementary menopausal medicine, acupuncture in menopause, herbal medicine in menopause, and acupuncture in menopause were searched in the studies from 1987 to 2019. Exclusion criteria were inadequate information in the study, lack of access to full-text articles, animal studies, and reports. At the end of the search, 145 articles out of a total of 400 articles were reviewed.

Results

In various studies, different herbs such as licorice, valerian, soy, sage, ginseng, etc., were used to improve menopausal symptoms. In addition, acupuncture and acupressure were used to reduce menopausal symptoms.

Conclusion

The efficacy and use of complementary and alternative medicine, along with other classical medicine care, can be a new model for improving menopausal symptoms in women. It is recommended that further clinical and review studies be conducted to develop complementary and alternative medicine.

The efficacy and safety of acupuncture for perimenopause symptom compared with different sham acupuncture control groups: A protocol of systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Perimenopause is a period that every woman must go through, most people are more or less affected by perimenopausal symptoms, it to affect women's health, work, life, and economy. As acupuncture treatment is more and more increasing in perimenopausal symptoms, there have also been many clinical trials about it. But the results of the trials are inconsistent. Therefore, we will conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the safety and efficacy of perimenopausal symptoms treated with acupuncture.

METHODS

The protocol followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols. RCT study on different acupuncture interventions for perimenopausal symptoms will be searched in 8 databases (PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, the web of science, CBM, CNKI, WAN FANG, and VIP). Besides, the search will also be performed on the clinical trial research platform if necessary. The primary outcome that will be extracted: the Flushes per 24 hours, the Frequency of hot flashes, the severity of hot flashes, the menopause-related symptom score, the treatment efficacy, the adverse event. Endnote software X8 will be used for study selection, STATA 13.0 and Review Manager software 5.3 will be used for analysis and synthesis. These studies selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment will be conducted by 2 independent reviewers.

RESULTS

This study will provide the results: 1. the primary and secondary outcome indicators of different acupuncture intervention measures (traditional hand acupuncture, moxibustion, ear acupuncture, laser, acupressure points) for perimenopausal symptoms. 2. The effects of different control groups (medicine control, routine care, waiting, and sham acupuncture control) on the analysis results will be reported, especially the effects of different sham acupuncture control (invasive/noninvasive) on the analysis results.

CONCLUSION

This systematic review and meta-analysis study hopes to provide useful evidence for better use of different types of acupuncture in treat perimenopausal symptoms and better design of control groups in related clinical trials.
