Abstract
INTRODUCTION Suicidal behavior is prevalent among individuals with mental disorders and constitutes a major global, clinical, and public health concern. It is generally accepted that the majority of persons who die by suicide are suffering from psychiatric disorders in most cases and that affective disorders make up the single commonest group. Suicide risk is highest during the years immediately following the onset of affective disorders; therefore, identifying risk factors and successful treatment of initially non-suicidal individuals with affective disorders can prevent developing suicidal behavior, help detecting, and predict it. Clarifying risk factors for individual types of major affective disorders could enhance earlier identification of suicidal risk, support preventive interventions and improve the treatment and prognosis of individuals at risk. We have developed a study protocol with the aim to address the complex interaction of endocrine parameters, lithium trace concentrations and cognitive functions with affective disorders and risk of suicidal behavior. METHOD A cross-sectional study will be done among individuals hospitalized after a suicidal attempt for treatment of affective disorders (group 1), hospitalized for the treatment of affective disorders without life time history of suicidal behavior (group 2), and control group individuals without life time history of mental disorders or suicidal behavior (group 3). Based on this study design we calculated the appropriate study sample size (N = 210). Venous blood samples of study participants will be collected for the evaluation of endocrine parameters, serum lithium concentrations, liver and kidney function. Data on sociodemographic factors, cognitive functions, history of mental disorders, and suicidality risk will be evaluated using validated questionnaires and instruments. Associations of endocrine parameters, serum lithium concentrations, cognitive functions, and suicidality risk will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including linear and logistic regression. Based on this study design we calculated the appropriate study sample size (N = 210). Power analysis has shown that this sample size is appropriate for detection of significant differences between the groups. CONCLUSION The findings of the potential influence of the associations between serum lithium trace concentrations, endocrine parameters, and cognitive functions on suicidality risk in individuals with affective disorders may help clinicians effectively plan suicide prevention and timely implement actions for treatment.

Abstract
Dysregulation of the morning cortisol response in young adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been shown to underlie several of the alterations present in their lives. Thus, the interaction of this mechanism with genetic and behavioural characteristics could explain a large proportion of the aetiology of ADHD in this population. For these reasons, the present study explores the associations of 30 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously identified as significant (after correction for multiple comparisons) in the aetiology of ADHD with an assessment of morning cortisol and impulsivity traits in a group of 120 adults aged 18-24 years. Participants were recruited through private centres of neuropsychology and psychiatry, as well as through events in local universities. Morning cortisol within 30 min of awakening and motor impulsivity traits were shown to moderate the effect of SNP rs10129500 on the severity of the symptoms of ADHD measured by the Adult Self-Report Scale. This variant associated with cortisol-binding globulin would explain the low concentrations of this hormone found in young adults with high symptoms of ADHD, which is accentuated when there are high levels of impulsivity. The proposed model allows for transferring the theoretical relationships between the dimensions that explain the aetiology of ADHD to an applied exploratory model with good performance.

Abstract
A growing body of evidences suggests that suicidal ideation (SI) and suicidal behaviors have biological bases. However, no biological marker is currently available to evaluate the suicide risk in individuals with SI or suicide attempt (SA). Moreover, the current risk assessment techniques poorly predict future suicidal events. The aim of this study was to examine the association of 39 new and already described peripheral cells and proteins (implicated in the immune system, oxidative stress and plasticity) with lifetime SA, past month SA, current SI, and future suicidal events (visit to the Emergency Department for SI or SA) in 266 treatment-seeking individuals with mood disorders. Equal parts of patients with and without past history of SA were recruited. All individuals at inclusion gave blood, were evaluated for SA recency, current SI, and were followed for two years afterwards. The 39 peripheral blood cellular and protein markers were entered separately for each outcome in Elastic Net models with 10-fold cross-validation, followed by single-analyte covariate-adjusted regression analyses for pre-selected analytes. Past month SA was associated with increased plasma levels of thrombospondin-2 and C-reactive protein, whereas current SI was associated with lower plasma serotonin levels. These associations were robust to adjustments for key covariates and corrections for multiple testing. The Cox proportional hazards regression showed that higher levels of thrombospondin-1 and of platelet-derived growth factor-AB predicted a future suicidal event. These two associations remained after adjustment for sex, age, and SA history, and outperformed the predictive value of past SA. Thrombospondins and platelet-derived growth factors have never been investigated in the context of suicide. Altogether, our results highlight the involvement in the suicidal process of platelet biological response and plasticity modifiers and also of inflammatory factors. They also suggest that SI and SA may have different biological correlates and that biomarkers associated with past SA or current SI do not automatically also predict future events.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abnormalities in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) have been reported in individuals with suicide behavior. The aim of the study was to evaluate cortisol levels in peripheral plasma of individuals with more than one suicide attempt. METHODS Cortisol concentrations in peripheral plasma were measured using the ELISA technique. Suicide attempts were evaluated by the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, while depression was evaluated by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. RESULTS We found elevated cortisol levels in the suicide attempt group when compared with healthy controls (F = 7.26, p-value = 0.008), but no statistical differences with the psychiatric diseases group (F = 1.49, p-value = 0.22). Cortisol levels were higher in individuals with depression (F = 8.99, P = 0.004) and in individuals with two or more suicide attempts (F = 13.56, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Cortisol levels are increased in individuals who attempt suicide and higher of cortisol concentrations in plasma regard to depression and more attempts of suicide.

Abstract
Cortisol and cortisone are 2 important glucocorticoids produced in the human hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis that respond to stress. An analytical method to determinate cortisol and cortisone in serum and saliva using high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry following a supported liquid extraction (SLE) was developed. Serum and saliva samples of 0.2 mL were extracted by SLE three times using 0.4 mL of methyl tert-butyl ether each time. The chromatographic separation was obtained on an Agilent Poroshell column using a 0.01% formic acid buffer and acetonitrile (60:40, v/v) as the solvent with a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min. Optimized quantitative mass transitions for cortisol, cortisone, and cortisone d-4 were 363.2/121.0 (m/z), 361.2/163.1 (m/z), and 367.1/270.7 (m/z), respectively. The method validation was achieved according to regulatory guidance. The lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) in serum were 2 ng/mL for cortisol and 1 ng/mL for cortisone, and the LLOQ in saliva were 0.1 ng/mL for cortisol and 0.2 ng/mL for cortisone. The developed method showed convenient and efficient extraction, a lower LLOQ, and a short running time. Modest correlations between serum and saliva cortisol and cortisone concentrations were found. The method was successfully applied in assessing the HPA condition of patients with depressive disorders.

Abstract
Cortisol can be considered as one biomarker for diagnosis of suicide; nevertheless, several studies have shown conflicting results. This study aimed to evaluate the levels of cortisol in individuals with suicide behavior and controls (healthy or with other psychiatric disorders). Published articles were searched on online databases (PubMed, Scopus and EBSCO). Standardized mean differences (SMD), heterogeneity, publication bias and sensitivity were assessed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) statistical software. The meta-analysis comprised 30 studies that provided 1775 cases, and 2162 controls (696 healthy individuals and 1465 individuals with other psychiatric diagnoses). The pooled results revealed that cortisol levels were higher in individuals with suicide behavior (SMD = 0.92, 95%CI = 0.26; 1.57, P = 0.006; I2 = 88%, Q < 0.001) than healthy controls. However, individuals with suicide behavior showed decreased levels of cortisol in the morning. Additionally, individuals with suicide behavior showed lower levels of cortisol than psychiatric controls (SMD = -1.79, 95%CI = -3.01; -0.58, P = 0.004, I2 = 89%, Q < 0.001). Morning cortisol levels in individuals with suicide behavior were higher than morning cortisol levels in psychiatric controls. Our updated meta-analysis suggests that peripheral levels of cortisol have a role in suicide behavior.

Abstract
Suicidality is one of the leading causes of death among young adults in the United States and represents a significant health problem worldwide. The suicide rate among adolescents in the United States has increased dramatically in the latest years and has been accompanied by considerable changes in youth suicide, especially among young girls. Henceforth, we need a good understanding of the risk factors contributing to suicidal behavior in youth. An explanatory model for suicidal behavior that links clinical and psychological risk factors to the underlying neurobiological, neuropsychological abnormalities related to suicidal behavior might predict to help identify treatment options and have empirical value. Our explanatory model proposes that developmental, biological factors (genetics, proteomics, epigenetics, immunological) and psychological or clinical (childhood adversities) may have causal relevance to the changes associated with suicidal behavior. In this way, our model integrates findings from several perspectives in suicidality and attempts to explain the relationship between various neurobiological, genetic, and clinical observations in suicide research, offering a comprehensive hypothesis to facilitate understanding of this complex outcome. Unraveling the knowledge of the complex interplay of psychological, biological, sociobiological, and clinical risk factors is highly essential, concerning the development of effective prevention strategy plans for suicidal ideation and suicide.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation which was found to have an important role in the pathophysiology of depression, suicide, and substance dependence, may be influenced by childhood maltreatment (CM). The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between CM and cortisol changes in methamphetamine-dependent individuals. METHODS In a cross-sectional study, methamphetamine-dependent individuals (n = =195) with or without both comorbid major depressive disorder (MDD) and a history of suicide attempts were selected and completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI), and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). To assess cortisol levels, saliva samples were collected at six time intervals for two consecutive days. RESULTS A history of CM significantly predicted wake-up cortisol level, cortisol awakening response (CAR), and diurnal cortisol slope. Methamphetamine-dependent individuals with both MDD and lifetime suicide attempts had higher CM and higher cortisol levels with a blunted diurnal cortisol slope than individuals who were merely methamphetamine-dependent. Individuals with high CM showed higher cortisol levels with a blunted diurnal slope than those with low or without CM. LIMITATIONS Cross-sectional data and use of self-report scales, especially retrospective measurements (e.g., the CTQ-SF), were important limitations of this study. CONCLUSION Findings suggest that methamphetamine-dependent individuals with adverse psychological factors such as CM, MDD, and suicide attempts may show dysregulation in biological factors including cortisol level. In addition, CM and its effects on cortisol in the HPA axis may emerge as important factors regarding psychopathological use of methamphetamine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been increasing interest in both suicide-specific diagnoses within the psychiatric nomenclature and related biomarkers. Because the Suicide Crisis Syndrome-an emotional crescendo of several interrelated symptoms-seems to be promising for the identification of individuals at risk of suicide, the aim of the present paper is to review the putative biological underpinnings of the Suicide Crisis Syndrome symptoms (entrapment, affective disturbance, loss of cognitive control, hyperarousal, social withdrawal). METHODS A PubMed literature search was performed to identify studies reporting a link between each of the 5 Suicide Crisis Syndrome symptoms and biomarkers previously reported to be associated with suicidal outcomes. RESULTS Disturbances in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, with dysregulated corticotropin-releasing hormone and cortisol levels, may be linked to a sense of entrapment. Affective disturbance is likely mediated by alterations in dopaminergic circuits involved in reward and antireward systems as well as endogenous opioids. Loss of cognitive control is linked to altered neurocognitive function in the areas of executive function, attention, and decision-making. Hyperarousal is linked to autonomic dysregulation, which may be characterized by a reduction in both heart rate variability and electrodermal activity. Social withdrawal has been associated with oxytocin availability. There is also evidence that inflammatory processes may contribute to individual Suicide Crisis Syndrome symptoms. CONCLUSION The Suicide Crisis Syndrome is a complex syndrome that is likely the consequence of distinct changes in interconnected neural, neuroendocrine, and autonomic systems. Available clinical and research data allow for development of empirically testable hypotheses and experimental paradigms to scrutinize the biological substrates of the Suicide Crisis Syndrome.

Abstract
This study was designed to compare the complete blood count (CBC) values of 38 violent suicidal attempt (VSA) and 38 nonviolent suicidal attempt (NVSA) patients and 38 healthy controls, particularly mean platelet volume (MPV) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR). MPV was found to be significantly higher (P = 0.000), and PLT was found to be significantly lower in the VSA group (P = 0.001). NLR was found to be significantly higher (P = 0.005) in the VSA group. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of MPV levels for VSA was 0.78 and 0.68 for NLR in the VSA group when compared with the NVSA group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Adolescence is a period of adaptation to social, hormonal, and physical changes. Because of these changes, adolescents are at risk for depression and suicidal thoughts. Female adolescents tend to be more sensitive to hormonal and emotional changes. Although the reciprocal relationship among depression, poor sleep quality, and suicide has been studied, whether decreased sleep time leads to depression-mediated suicide or induces suicide itself remains to be determined. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze (using a path analysis) the indirect (i.e., due to depression) and direct effects of sleep on suicidal ideation for female adolescents. METHODS We use nationally representative data from the Korean juvenile health behavior online survey to analyze the sleep effects on suicidal ideation. A total of 12,046 Korean female adolescents were included in this study. We analyzed data from the juvenile health behavior online survey (2017) conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and identified variables that could affect the mental health of female adolescents. A path analysis was performed to determine the direct role of sleep in suicidal ideation. RESULTS Decreased sleep was one of the several risk factors for suicidal ideation. Unexpectedly, after controlling for other risk factors including depression and socioeconomic factors, insufficient sleep was found to have direct effects on suicidal ideation. The indirect effect of insufficient sleep on suicidal ideation was mediated by depression. CONCLUSION Sleep is a modifiable factor that could reduce the suicide rate among female adolescents and could be targeted through public health prevention efforts.
