Abstract
The human body can be viewed as a combination of ecological niches inhabited by trillions of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, all united by the microbiota concept. Human health largely depends on the nature of these relationships and how they are built and maintained. However, personal hygiene practices have historically been focused on the wholesale elimination of pathogens and "hygiene-challenging microorganisms" without considering the collateral damage to beneficial and commensal species. The microbiota can vary significantly in terms of the qualitative and quantitative composition both between different people and within one person during life, and the influence of various environmental factors, including age, nutrition, bad habits, genetic factors, physical activity, medication, and hygienic practices, facilitates these changes. Disturbance of the microbiota is a predisposing factor for the development of diseases and also greatly influences the course and severity of potential complications. Therefore, studying the composition of the microbiota of the different body systems and its appropriate correction is an urgent problem in the modern world. The application of personal hygiene products or probiotics must not compromise health through disruption of the healthy microbiota. Where changes in the composition or metabolic functions of the microbiome may occur, they must be carefully evaluated to ensure that essential biological functions are unaffected. As such, the purpose of this review is to consider the microbiota of each of the "ecological niches" of the human body and highlight the importance of the microbiota in maintaining a healthy body as well as the possibility of its modulation through the use of probiotics for the prevention and treatment of certain human diseases.

Abstract
The oral cavity contains the second-largest microbiota in the human body. The cavity's anatomically and physiologically diverse niches facilitate a wide range of symbiotic bacteria living at distinct oral sites. Consequently, the oral microbiota exhibits site specificity, with diverse species, compositions, and structures influenced by specific aspects of their placement. Variations in oral microbiota structure caused by changes in these influencing factors can impact overall health and lead to the development of diseases-not only in the oral cavity but also in organs distal to the mouth-such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disease. Conversely, diseases can exacerbate the imbalance of the oral microbiota, creating a vicious cycle. Understanding the heterogeneity of both the oral microbiome and individual humans is important for investigating the causal links between the oral microbiome and diseases. Additionally, understanding the intricacies of the oral microbiome's composition and regulatory factors will help identify the potential causes of related diseases and develop interventions to prevent and treat illnesses in this domain. Therefore, turning to the extant research in this field, we systematically review the relationship between oral microbiome dynamics and human diseases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION S. mutans has been identified as the primary pathogenic bacterium in biofilm-mediated dental caries. The biogenic selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) produced by L. plantarum KNF-5 were used in this study against S. mutans ATCC 25175. OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were: (1) the biosynthesis of SeNPs by L. plantarum KNF-5, (2) the characterization of SeNPs, (3) the investigation of the inhibitory effect of biogenic SeNPs against S. mutans ATCC 25175, and (4) the determination of the anti-biofilm potential of SeNPS against S. mutans ATCC 25175. METHODOLOGY 3 mL of the culture was added to 100 mL of MRS medium and incubated. After 4 h, Na2SeO3 solution (concentration 100 μg/mL) was added and incubated at 37 °C for 36 h. The color of the culture solution changed from brownish-yellow to reddish, indicating the formation of SeNPs. The characterization of SeNPs was confirmed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, FTIR, SEM-EDS and a particle size analyzer. The antibacterial activity was determined by the disk diffusion method, the MIC by the micro-double dilution method, and the biofilm inhibitory potential by the crystal violet method and the MTT assay. The effect of SeNPs on S. mutans ATCC 25175 was determined using SEM and CLSM spectrometry techniques. The sulfate-anthrone method was used to analyze the effect of SeNPs on insoluble extracellular polysaccharides. The expression of genes in S. mutans ATCC 25175 was analyzed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). PREPARATION OF NANOPARTICLES SeNPs produced by probiotic bacteria are considered a safe method. In this study, L. plantarum KNF-5 (probiotic strain) was used for the production of SeNPs. RESULTS The biogenic SeNPs were spherical and coated with proteins and polysaccharides and had a diameter of about 270 nm. The MIC of the SeNPs against S. mutans ATCC 25175 was 3.125 mg/mL. Biofilm growth was also significantly suppressed at this concentration. The expression of genes responsible for biofilm formation (GtfB, GtfC, BrpA and GbpB,) was reduced when S. mutans ATCC 25175 was treated with SeNPs. CONCLUSION It was concluded that the biogenic SeNPs produced by L. plantarum KNF-5 was highly effective to inhibit the growth of S. mutans ATCC 25175. NOVELTY STATEMENT The application of biogenic SeNPs, a natural anti-biofilm agent against S. mutans ATCC 25175. In the future, this study will provide a new option for the prevention and treatment of dental caries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of prebiotics and/or probiotic bacteria with the potential to modulate the oral ecosystem may play an important role in the prevention and management of dental caries. To assess the evidence of the potential of pre/probiotics both in the prevention and treatment of dental caries, we focused on the PICO question "In individuals with caries, after probiotic administration, is there an improvement in outcomes directly related to caries risk and development?". METHODS An extensive systematic search was conducted in electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane, to identify articles with relevant data. This systematic review included trials performed in Humans; published in English; including the observation of patients with caries, with clear indication of the probiotic used and measuring the outcomes directly involved with the cariogenic process, including the quantification of bacteria with cariogenic potential. To evaluate the methodological quality of the studies, the critical assessment tool from the Joanna Briggs Institute was used. RESULTS Eight hundred and fifty articles, potentially relevant, were identified. Following PRISMA guidelines 14 articles were included in this systematic review. Outcomes such as reduction of cariogenic microorganism counts, salivary pH, buffer capacity, and caries activity were assessed. The probiotic most often referred with beneficial results in dental caries outcomes is Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus. Regarding the most used administration vehicle, in studies with positive effects on the caries management, probiotic supplemented milk could be considered the best administration vehicle. CONCLUSIONS Evidence suggests a beneficial effect of probiotic supplemented milk (Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus) as an adjuvant for caries prevention and management. However, comparable evidence is scarce and better designed and comparable studies are needed.

Abstract
This narrative review describes the oral microbiome, and its role in oral health and disease, before considering the impact of commonly used over-the-counter (OTC) mouthwashes on oral bacteria, viruses, bacteriophages, and fungi that make up these microbial communities in different niches of the mouth. Whilst certain mouthwashes have proven antimicrobial actions and clinical effectiveness supported by robust evidence, this review reports more recent metagenomics evidence, suggesting that mouthwashes such as chlorhexidine may cause "dysbiosis," whereby certain species of bacteria are killed, leaving others, sometimes unwanted, to predominate. There is little known about the effects of mouthwashes on fungi and viruses in the context of the oral microbiome (virome) in vivo, despite evidence that they "kill" certain viral pathogens ex vivo. Evidence for mouthwashes, much like antibiotics, is also emerging with regards to antimicrobial resistance, and this should further be considered in the context of their widespread use by clinicians and patients. Therefore, considering the potential of currently available OTC mouthwashes to alter the oral microbiome, this article finally proposes that the ideal mouthwash, whilst combatting oral disease, should "balance" antimicrobial communities, especially those associated with health. Which antimicrobial mouthwash best fits this ideal remains uncertain.

Abstract
This narrative review summarises "alternative" or "natural" over-the-counter (OTC) mouthwashes not covered elsewhere in this supplement and newly emerging products, as potential mouthwashes of the future. The "natural" mouthwashes reviewed include saltwater, baking soda, coconut oil, charcoal, propolis, seaweeds, and probiotics. Other than essential oils, it is apparent that their clinical effectiveness is still under debate, but there is some evidence to suggest that propolis reduces plaque and gingivitis. This review also covers the host immune response, via novel anti-inmmunomodulant mouthwashes, such as erythropoietin to reduce inflammation with oral mucositis (OM) after radiotherapy. The emerging concept of nanoparticle-containing mouthwashes, such as iron oxide, is further discussed for OM, this agent having the potential for more targeted delivery of chemical antimicrobials. Unfortunately, there are impacts on the environment of widening mouthwash use with more new products, including increased use of packaging, antimicrobial resistance, and possible detrimental effects on marine life. Further, there are roadblocks, relating to regularly approvals and side effects, that still need to be overcome for any OTC deivered immunomodulant or nanoformulation mouthwashes. Despite these caveats, there are many new mouthwashes under development, which could help manage major oral diseases such as caries, gingivitis, and periodontal disease.

Abstract
Fluoride is added to drinking water in some countries to prevent tooth decay (caries). There is no conclusive evidence that community water fluoridation (CWF) at WHO recommended concentrations for caries prevention has any harmful effects. However, research is ongoing regarding potential effects of ingested fluoride on human neurodevelopment and endocrine dysfunction. Simultaneously, research has emerged highlighting the significance of the human microbiome in gastrointestinal and immune health. In this review we evaluate the literature examining the effect of fluoride exposure on the human microbiome. Unfortunately, none of the studies retrieved examined the effects of ingested fluoridated water on the human microbiome. Animal studies generally examined acute fluoride toxicity following ingestion of fluoridated food and water and conclude that fluoride exposure can detrimentally perturb the normal microbiome. These data are difficult to extrapolate to physiologically relevant human exposure dose ranges and the significance to humans living in areas with CWF requires further investigation. Conversely, evidence suggests that the use of fluoride containing oral hygiene products may have beneficial effects on the oral microbiome regarding caries prevention. Overall, while fluoride exposure does appear to impact the human and animal microbiome, the long-term consequences of this requires further study.
