Abstract
Background A high body mass index (BMI) increases the risk of hypertension. However, little is known about the dose-dependent association between BMI and hypertension. Therefore, this study investigated the prevalence of hypertension in 7568 subjects from the Jiangsu Province, Eastern China, and analyzed the dose-response relationship between BMI and hypertension risk. Methods The eligible subjects completed a structured questionnaire and clinical biochemical indicators were measured according to standardized protocols. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between BMI and hypertension. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was used to analyze the dose-response relationship between BMI and hypertension risk. Moreover, sensitivity analysis was performed to verify the robustness of our findings. Results The prevalence of hypertension was 35.3 % in the total population. BMI was significantly associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The fully-adjusted odds ratio (OR) with 95 % confidence interval (CI) for hypertension was 1.17 (1.15, 1.19) for every 1 kg/m2 increase in BMI. Furthermore, the OR (95 % CI) for hypertension in the highest BMI group (Obesity) was 4.14 (3.45, 4.96) after adjusting for covariates compared with the normal group. Multivariable adjusted RCS analysis showed a positive and linear dose-response relationship between BMI and hypertension risk both in male and female populations (all P for non-linearity > 0.05). Conclusion Our study demonstrated a positive and linear dose-response relationship between BMI and the risk of hypertension. The results of this study provide evidence for BMI-related clinical interventions to reduce the risk of hypertension.

Abstract
Hypertension (HTN) is a common chronic condition associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Anthropometric indices of adiposity are known to be associated with a risk of HTN. The aim of this study was to identify the anthropometric indices that best associate with HTN in an Iranian population. 9704 individuals aged 35-65 years were recruited as part of the Mashhad Stroke and Heart Atherosclerotic Disorder (MASHAD) study. Demographic and anthropometric data of all participants were recorded. HTN was defined as a systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg, and/ or a diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90 mmHg on two subsequent measurements, or being treated with oral drug therapy for BP. Data mining methods including Logistic Regression (LR), Decision Tree (DT), and Bootstrap Forest (BF) were applied. Of 9704 participants, 3070 had HTN, and 6634 were normotensive. LR showed that body roundness index (BRI), body mass index (BMI) and visceral adiposity index (VAI) were significantly associated with HTN in both genders (P < 0.0001). BRI showed the greatest association with HTN (OR = 1.276, 95%CI = (1.224, 1.330)). For BMI we had OR = 1.063, 95%CI = (1.047, 1.080), for VAI we had OR = 1.029, 95%CI = (1.020, 1.038). An age < 47 years and BRI < 4.04 was associated with a 90% probability of being normotensive. The BF indicated that age, sex and BRI had the most important role in HTN. In summary, among anthropometric indices the most powerful indicator for discriminating hypertensive from normotensive patients was BRI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Body fat mass (FM) is associated with multiple organ damage. However, data regarding the relationship between various organ damage and FM are rare in the elderly. Therefore, we aim to perform an analysis on the relationship between organ damage and FM in a geriatric cohort. METHODS 3331 participants were included in this analysis. Based on age, body height, body weight, waist circumference, and race, we calculated FM with the established formula. Organ damage, including arterial stiffening, lower extremity atherosclerosis, left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), micro-albuminuria, and chronic kidney disease (CKD), were measured and calculated with standard methods. RESULTS All organ damage parameters were significantly related to FM (all p < 0.001). In univariate logistics regression, the highest quartile of FM was tied to the increased risk of arterial stiffening, lower extremity atherosclerosis, LVH, micro-albuminuria, and CKD (all p < 0.05). After adjustment, participants with higher quantiles of FM had a significantly increased odd ratio (OR) for arterial stiffening [OR = 1.51, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.15-1.99, p = 0.002] and LVH (OR = 1.99, 95% CI: 1.48-2.67, p < 0.001). Moreover, FM was linearly associated with arterial stiffening and LVH in total population and gender subgroups. Independent of confounders, FM was significantly correlated with arterial stiffening, lower extremity atherosclerosis, LVH and CKD in female, while was only related to LVH in male. CONCLUSIONS Among various organ damage, elevated FM is significantly and independently associated with arterial stiffening and LVH in the elderly. Compared with men, women with increased FM are more likely to have multiple organ damage.

Abstract
Resistance training could counter hypertension and improve muscle quality (MQ), but current evidence about the correlation between MQ and hypertension is limited. The authors aimed to explore this correlation using the data of participants aged 20-59 from NHANES 2011-2014 via a cross-sectional study. The MQ was quantified as handgrip strength (kg)/lean soft tissue mass (kg) of the dominant arm. Weighted multivariate logistic regression models were mainly utilized to investigate the MQ-hypertension association; linear trend tests and subgroup analysis were also conducted. Moreover, the authors employed weighted multivariate linear regression models to uncover the association between blood pressure (BP) and MQ. Four thousand four hundred and sixty-nine individuals were enrolled, and 1167 were hypertensive. Hypertensive participants had a lower MQ than normotensive participants. In the totally adjusted model, each unit elevation in MQ was related to a 7% reduction in hypertension prevalence (p =.002). There was a decreasing trend in hypertension prevalence and in systolic BP as the MQ increased from the bottom to the top quartile across all three models (p for trend ≤.01), with a 28% difference (OR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.54, 0.95) in hypertension prevalence and a 1.88 mm Hg (95% CI: -3.56, -0.20) difference in SBP between the top and bottom quartiles in the fully adjusted model. Subgroup analysis further confirmed the MQ-hypertension inverse association. In conclusions, the MQ was negatively associated with hypertension prevalence and systolic BP, which suggests the MQ may be a protective factor for hypertension and need to be improved.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A significant proportion of the global burden of disability and premature mortality has caused by hypertension. It seems that the relationship between obesity and hypertension is not only associated with excessive body fat mass (FM) but also with body adipose distribution patterns. The present study investigated the association between regional fat distribution using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and hypertension in older adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed using the data from Bushehr Elderly Health Program (BEH) on a total of 2419 participants aged 60 and over. Hypertension was defined as SBP of at least 140 mmHg and/or DBP of at least 90 mmHg. SBP between 120 and 139 mmHg and/or a DBP between 80 and 89 mmHg were considered prehypertension. Participants underwent body composition measurement by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry to analyze FM, fat-free mass (FFM) in trunk and extremities composition. RESULTS The results showed that 460 (19.02%) of participants had prehypertension, and 1,818 (75.15% ) had hypertension. The odds of having prehypertension (OR: 1.06, 95%CI: 1.01-1.12) and hypertension (OR: 1.08, 95%CI: 1.03-1.13) increased with a rise in total body FM percentage. Moreover, people with a higher FM to FFM ratio had increased odds of being prehypertensive (OR: 9.93, 95%CI: 1.28-76.99) and hypertensive (OR: 16.15, 95%CI: 2.47-105.52). Having a higher android to gynoid FM ratio was related to increased odds of being prehypertensive and hypertensive. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that a higher body FM, particularly in the android region, is associated with higher odds of having hypertension in older adults.

Abstract
Increasing attention has been paid to the association between lean body mass (LBM) and hypertension in recent years, but the previous findings have often been contradictory. Therefore, the authors investigated the association between LBM and hypertension through a cross-sectional study in the United States. To investigate the relationship between LBM and hypertension, the authors conducted weighted multivariable logistic regression models. The authors used the restricted cubic spline regression model to determine if there was a nonlinear correlation. In order to locate the inflection point, the authors built a two-part linear regression model using a recursive method. In the full adjustment model, LBM was positively associated with hypertension, with ORs (95% CI) of 1.19 (1.02, 1.38). In the further linear trend test, the ORs (95% CI) for Q2, Q3, and Q4 were 0.76 (0.60, 0.95), 0.62 (0.47, 0.80), and 0.66 (0.48, 0.91), respectively, compared to Q1, which suggested that the association between LBM and hypertension might be non-linear. The authors performed the restricted cubic spline curve to confirm this non-linear relationship and found the inflection point of 43.21 kg with an opposite relationship in which LBM and hypertension exhibited a negative correction of 0.66 (0.50, 0.86) before the inflection point and a positive correlation of 1.20 (1.03, 1.39) after the inflection point. Our study highlighted a non-linear association between LBM and hypertension in the general US population.

Abstract
Objective The relationship between body composition fat mass (FM) and lean body mass (LBM) and diabetes risk is currently debated, and the purpose of this study was to examine the association of predicted FM and LBM with diabetes in both sexes. Methods The current study was a secondary analysis of data from the NAGALA (NAfld in the Gifu Area, Longitudinal Analysis) cohort study of 15,463 baseline normoglycemic participants. Predicted LBM and FM were calculated for each participant using anthropometric prediction equations developed and validated for different sexes based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database, and the outcome of interest was diabetes (types not distinguished) onset. Multivariate Cox regression analyses were applied to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations of predicted FM and LBM with diabetes risk and further visualized their associations using a restricted cubic spline function. Results The incidence density of diabetes was 3.93/1000 person-years over a mean observation period of 6.13 years. In women, predicted LBM and FM were linearly associated with diabetes risk, with each kilogram increase in predicted LBM reducing the diabetes risk by 65% (HR 0.35, 95%CI 0.17, 0.71; P < 0.05), whereas each kilogram increase in predicted FM increased the diabetes risk by 84% (HR 1.84, 95%CI 1.26, 2.69; P < 0.05). In contrast, predicted LBM and FM were non-linearly associated with diabetes risk in men (all P for non-linearity < 0.05), with an L-shaped association between predicted LBM and diabetes risk and a saturation point that minimized the risk of diabetes was 45.4 kg, while predicted FM was associated with diabetes risk in a U-shape pattern and a threshold point with the lowest predicted FM-related diabetes risk was 13.76 kg. Conclusion In this Asian population cohort, we found that high LBM and low FM were associated with lower diabetes risk according to anthropometric equations. Based on the results of the non-linear analysis, we believed that it may be appropriate for Asian men to keep their LBM above 45.4 kg and their FM around 13.76 kg.

Abstract
Objective High body mass index (BMI) is an important risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the association of body composition such as fat mass (FM) and lean body mass (LBM) with NAFLD has not been adequately studied. The purpose of this study was to clarify the contribution of body composition FM and LBM to NAFLD. Methods We analyzed data from 7,411 men and 6,840 women in the NAGALA cohort study. LBM and FM were estimated for all subjects using validated anthropometric prediction equations previously developed from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Using multiple logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) to analyze the association and the dose-response curve of predicted LBM and FM with NAFLD in both sexes. Results The prevalence of NAFLD in man and woman subjects was 27.37 and 6.99%, respectively. Predicted FM was positively and linearly associated with NAFLD in both sexes, with each 1 kg increase in predicted FM associated with a 27 and 40% increased risk of NAFLD in men and women, respectively. In contrast, predicted LBM was negatively associated with NAFLD in both sexes, with each 1 kg increase in predicted LBM reducing the risk of NAFLD by 4 and 19% in men and women, respectively. In addition, according to the RCS curve, the risk of NAFLD did not change in men when the predicted LBM was between 47 and 52 kg, and there seemed to be a saturation effect; further, the threshold value of the saturation effect was calculated to be about 52.08 kg by two-piecewise logistic regression, and the protective effect on NAFLD would be significantly enhanced when the man predicted LBM was greater than 52.08 kg. Conclusion The current findings suggested that body composition LBM and FM had opposite associations with NAFLD in both sexes, with higher LBM associated with a lower risk of NAFLD and higher FM increasing the risk of NAFLD, especially in women.
