Abstract
Stimuli that potentially require a rapid defensive or avoidance action can appear from the periphery at any time in natural environments. de Wit et al. (Cortex 127: 120-130, 2020) recently reported novel evidence suggestive of a fundamental neural mechanism that allows organisms to effectively deal with such situations. In the absence of any task, motor cortex excitability was found to be greater whenever gaze was directed away from either hand. If modulation of cortical excitability as a function of gaze location is a fundamental principle of brain organization, then one would expect its operation to be present outside of motor cortex, including brain regions involved in perception. To test this hypothesis, we applied single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to the right lateral occipital lobe while participants directed their eyes to the left, straight-ahead, or to the right, and reported the presence or absence of a phosphene. No external stimuli were presented. Cortical excitability as reflected by the proportion of trials on which phosphenes were elicited from stimulation of the right visual cortex was greater with eyes deviated to the right as compared with the left. In conjunction with our previous findings of change in motor cortex excitability when gaze and effector are not aligned, this eye position-driven change in visual cortex excitability presumably serves to facilitate the detection of stimuli and subsequent readiness to act in nonfoveated regions of space. The existence of this brain-wide mechanism has clear adaptive value given the unpredictable nature of natural environments in which human beings are situated and have evolved.NEW & NOTEWORTHY For many complex tasks, humans focus attention on the site relevant to the task at hand. Humans evolved and live in dangerous environments, however, in which threats arise from outside the attended site; this fact necessitates a process by which the periphery is monitored. Using single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), we demonstrated for the first time that eye position modulates visual cortex excitability. We argue that this underlies at least in part what we term "surveillance attention."

Abstract
Introduction Personality shapes the cognitive, affective, and behavioral interactions between individuals and the environment. Defensive peripersonal space (DPPS) is the projected interface between the body and the world with a protective function for the body. Previous studies suggest that DPPS displays inter-individual variability that is associated with psychiatric symptoms, such as anxiety. However, DPPS may share a link with personality traits. Methods Fifty-five healthy participants were assessed with the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5)-Adult to evaluate personality dimensions. Subjects underwent the Hand Blink Reflex (HBR) task that estimates the DPPS limits by assessing the modulation of blink intensity in response to the median nerve stimulation. Data of the HBR was analyzed with Bayesian multilevel models, while the relationship between DPPS and personality traits was explored using network analysis. Results HBR was best modeled using a piecewise linear regression model, with two distinct slope parameters for electromyographic data. Network analyzes showed a positive correlation between the proximal slope and detachment personality trait, suggesting that individuals with higher scores in the detachment trait had an increased modulation of HBR, resulting in a larger extension of the DPPS. Discussion Features of the detachment personality trait include avoidance of interpersonal experiences, restricted affectivity, and suspiciousness, which affect interpersonal functioning. We suggest that DPPS may represent a characteristic feature of maladaptive personality traits, thus constitute a biomarker or a target for rehabilitative interventions.

Abstract
Using a mirror adequately oriented, the motion of just one hand induces the illusion of the movement with the other hand. Here, we tested the hypothesis that such a mirror phenomenon may be underpinned by an electroencephalographic (EEG) event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS) of central alpha rhythms (around 10 Hz) as a neurophysiological measure of the interactions among cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, and thalamus during movement preparation and execution. Eighteen healthy right-handed male participants performed standard auditory-triggered unilateral (right) or bilateral finger movements in the No Mirror (M-) conditions. In the Mirror (M+) condition, the unilateral right finger movements were performed in front of a mirror oriented to induce the illusion of simultaneous left finger movements. EEG activity was recorded from 64 scalp electrodes, and the artifact-free event-related EEG epochs were used to compute alpha ERD. In the M- conditions, a bilateral prominent central alpha ERD was observed during the bilateral movements, while left central alpha ERD and right alpha ERS were seen during unilateral right movements. In contrast, the M+ condition showed significant bilateral and widespread alpha ERD during the unilateral right movements. These results suggest that the above illusion of the left movements may be related to alpha ERD measures reflecting excitatory desynchronizing signals in right lateral premotor and primary somatomotor areas possibly in relation to basal ganglia-thalamic loops.

A comparative evaluation of the four measurement methods for comfort and reachability distance perceptions. Behav Res Methods 2021; 54:1766-1777. Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the precision, accuracy, and reliability of the common measurement methods for collecting comfort and reachability distances. Four measurement methods were applied in the study: real-life measurement, virtual reality (VR) simulation, the media method, and the paper-and-pencil test. Forty participants were recruited, who were required to determine their comfort and reachability distances when approached by, or actively approaching, confederates under the four methods. The relative error magnitude and mean absolute difference were used to evaluate the precision and accuracy of the methods, respectively. Then, intraclass correlation coefficients were applied to evaluate the reliability of the methods. The ANOVA results showed that the confederate's gender, method, and pattern all had significant effects on the comfort and reachability distances. The distance obtained by the paper-and-pencil test was the smallest, while the distance measured by the media method was larger. The real-life measurement had high reliability, but its precision performance was worse than that of both the VR simulation and the active media method. The VR simulation had the best precision and reliability, while the measurement value tended to be overestimated. The media method in the passive pattern showed the worst precision, accuracy, and reliability performance among the four methods. The active media method performed well except for accuracy when collecting distance data. The paper-and-pencil test showed erroneous results regarding the precision and reliability performance. These findings provide scientific reference suggestions for the selection of measuring methods for collecting comfort and reachability distances.
