Memristive Hodgkin-Huxley Spiking Neuron Model for Reproducing Neuron Behaviors

The Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) spiking neuron model reproduces the dynamic characteristics of the neuron by mimicking the action potential, ionic channels, and spiking behaviors. The memristor is a nonlinear device with variable resistance. In this paper, the memristor is introduced to the HH spiking model, and the memristive Hodgkin-Huxley spiking neuron model (MHH) is presented. We experimentally compare the HH spiking model and the MHH spiking model by applying different stimuli. First, the individual current pulse is injected into the HH and MHH spiking models. The comparison between action potentials, current densities, and conductances is carried out. Second, the reverse single pulse stimulus and a series of pulse stimuli are applied to the two models. The effects of current density and action time on the production of the action potential are analyzed. Finally, the sinusoidal current stimulus acts on the two models. The various spiking behaviors are realized by adjusting the frequency of the sinusoidal stimulus. We experimentally demonstrate that the MHH spiking model generates more action potential than the HH spiking model and takes a short time to change the memductance. The reverse stimulus cannot activate the action potential in both models. The MHH spiking model performs smoother waveforms and a faster speed to return to the resting potential. The larger the external stimulus, the faster action potential generated, and the more noticeable change in conductances. Meanwhile, the MHH spiking model shows the various spiking patterns of neurons.

Anesthesia modifies subthreshold critical slowing down in a stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley-like model with inhibitory synaptic input

The dynamics of a stochastic type-I Hodgkin-Huxley-like point neuron model exposed to inhibitory synaptic noise are investigated as a function of distance from spiking threshold and the inhibitory influence of the general anesthetic agent propofol. The model is biologically motivated and includes the effects of intrinsic ion-channel noise via a stochastic differential equation description as well as inhibitory synaptic noise modeled as multiple Poisson-distributed impulse trains with saturating response functions. The effect of propofol on these synapses is incorporated through this drug's principal influence on fast inhibitory neurotransmission mediated by γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type-A receptors via reduction of the synaptic response decay rate. As the neuron model approaches spiking threshold from below, we track membrane voltage fluctuation statistics of numerically simulated stochastic trajectories. We find that for a given distance from spiking threshold, increasing the magnitude of anesthetic-induced inhibition is associated with augmented signatures of critical slowing: fluctuation amplitudes and correlation times grow as spectral power is increasingly focused at 0 Hz. Furthermore, as a function of distance from threshold, anesthesia significantly modifies the power-law exponents for variance and correlation time divergences observable in stochastic trajectories. Compared to the inverse square root power-law scaling of these quantities anticipated for the saddle-node bifurcation of type-I neurons in the absence of anesthesia, increasing anesthetic-induced inhibition results in an observable exponent <-0.5 for variance and >-0.5 for correlation time divergences. However, these behaviors eventually break down as distance from threshold goes to zero with both the variance and correlation time converging to common values independent of anesthesia. Compared to the case of no synaptic input, linearization of an approximating multivariate Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model reveals these effects to be the consequence of an additional slow eigenvalue associated with synaptic activity that competes with those of the underlying point neuron in a manner that depends on distance from spiking threshold.

A consensus layer V pyramidal neuron can sustain interpulse-interval coding

In terms of a single neuron's long-distance communication, interpulse intervals (IPIs) are an attractive alternative to rate and binary codes. As a proxy for an IPI, a neuron's time-to-spike can be found in the biophysical and experimental intracellular literature. Using the current, consensus layer V pyramidal neuron, the present study examines the feasibility of IPI-coding and examines the noise sources that limit the information rate of such an encoding. In descending order of importance, the noise sources are (i) synaptic variability, (ii) sodium channel shot-noise, followed by (iii) thermal noise. The biophysical simulations allow the calculation of mutual information, which is about 3.0 bits/spike. More importantly, while, by any conventional definition, the biophysical model is highly nonlinear, the underlying function that relates input intensity to the defined output variable is linear. When one assumes the perspective of a neuron coding via first hitting-time, this result justifies a pervasive and simplifying assumption of computational modelers-that a class of cortical neurons can be treated as linearly additive, computational devices.
