Frequency of ABO Blood Group in Pregnant Women and Its Correlation With Pregnancy-Related Complications

Introduction

The ABO blood group type has been considered an independent risk factor in the occurrence of pregnancy-related complications leading to significant morbidity and mortality in pregnant mothers and neonates. This study aims to determine the maternal ABO blood group and its correlation with pregnancy-related complications.

Methods

We analysed data of 497 pregnant female patients aged between 25 and 40 years who presented with a gestational age of > 14 weeks from June 1, 2020, to November 30, 2020. Patients’ age, parity, gestational age at the first visit, body mass index (BMI) at the first visit, ABO blood group, gestational age at delivery, mode of delivery, birth weight of neonate, and pregnancy-related complications including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), preterm delivery, low birth weight (LBW), and small for gestational age (SGA) infants were evaluated.

Results

The mean age of 497 patients was 27.6 (27.62 ± 3.35) years. Mean BMI was 22.7 (22.7 ± 3.1 kg/m²), parity was 1.85 (1.85 ± 2.3), gestational age at first visit was 23.19 (23.19 ± 3.4) weeks and gestational age at delivery was 37.0 (37.0 ± 2.6) weeks. There were 205 (41.25%) spontaneous vaginal delivery and 292 (58.75%) cesarean sections. The average birth weight of the neonate was 2684.31 ± 622.4 g. Preeclampsia was observed in 107 (21.53%), GDM in 17 (3.42%), and preterm delivery in 154 (30.99%) women. Considering the neonatal outcome, 124 (24.95%) babies had LBW and 49 (9.86%) were SGA. The rate of preeclampsia and GDM was not statistically significant among different blood groups while the rate of preterm delivery, LBW, and SGA was significant among women with different blood groups.

Conclusion

We conclude that the ABO blood group is associated with maternal and neonatal pregnancy-related complications when considering the risk of preterm delivery, LBW, and SGA but not with GDM and preeclampsia. This finding will help clinicians to identify the patients at risk of developing pregnancy-related complications and hence, to take timely and appropriate measures.

Designing and Implementing a 5-Year Transfusion Medicine Diploma Program in China

The need for physicians and technical consultants specialized in transfusion medicine is urgent in China, as there are 20 000 hospitals and 500 blood centers in need of staff with this expertise. The progress made in transfusion medicine as a specialty has been relatively slow in China. Current Chinese medical education and service systems have not developed transfusion medicine as a stand-alone medical specialty. Most physicians receive only minimal training in transfusion medicine in medical school. This training is usually integrated into surgical training and addresses the most common technologies. In 2008, a 5-year bachelor's diploma program in transfusion medicine was established as an undergraduate specialty in Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China. This article intends to summarize the 8 years of experience educating undergraduates in the specialty of transfusion medicine.

Blood donors in Iceland: a nationwide population-based study from 2005 to 2013

BACKGROUND

Demographic information of blood donors is important to formulate strategies for recruitment and maintenance of the donor group. Factors like aging population, increasingly advanced medical treatments, and growing safety initiatives to protect donors and recipients of blood components are likely to affect the size of the donor group in the future. The purpose of this study was to determine the size of the donor group in Iceland and describe the demographic and donation characteristics.

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS

The size of the Icelandic donor group was determined and the demographic and donation characteristics described, particularly of all newly registered and whole blood donors in the country from 2005 to 2013.

RESULTS

Overall the prevalence of whole blood donors per population decreased by 24.2% between 2005 and 2013 or by 3.4% per year. Females and males were almost equally represented as newly registered donors (44.7%/55.3%) but males were better represented as whole blood donors (26.7%/73.3%). Only 57.5% of newly registered donors in 2005 to 2006 returned to donate blood in the period 2005-2013.

CONCLUSION

In parallel with a period of decreased demand for red blood cells, the number of whole blood donors and donations declined in Iceland between 2005 and 2013 but still with adequate supply. A smaller retention among females than males gives the opportunity to focus on increasing the share of women among regular blood donors. Strategic work toward effective recruitment and retention of newly registered donors is needed to ensure a sufficiently large group of blood donors in Iceland in the near future.
