Three-Dimensional Finite Element Investigation into Effects of Implant Thread Design and Loading Rate on Stress Distribution in Dental Implants and Anisotropic Bone

Variations in the implant thread shape and occlusal load behavior may result in significant changes in the biological and mechanical properties of dental implants and surrounding bone tissue. Most previous studies consider a single implant thread design, an isotropic bone structure, and a static occlusal load. However, the effects of different thread designs, bone material properties, and loading conditions are important concerns in clinical practice. Accordingly, the present study performs Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations to investigate the static, quasi-static and dynamic response of the implant and implanted bone material under various thread designs and occlusal loading directions (buccal-lingual, mesiodistal and apical). The simulations focus specifically on the von Mises stress, displacement, shear stress, compressive stress, and tensile stress within the implant and the surrounding bone. The results show that the thread design and occlusal loading rate have a significant effect on the stress distribution and deformation of the implant and bone structure during clinical applications. Overall, the results provide a useful insight into the design of enhanced dental implants for an improved load transfer efficiency and success rate.

Biomechanical Evaluation of Stress Distribution in Subcrestal Placed Platform-switched Short Dental Implants in D4 Bone: In Vitro Finiteelement Model Study

The present study was carried out to assess stress distribution in the maxillary posterior bone region (D4 bone) with the help of a short platform switched subcrestal dental implants using the FEM model. Missing teeth surfaces related to the maxillary posterior region were stimulated. The bone model had a cancellous core of (0.5 mm) which represents D4 bone. A 7.5x4.6 mm screw type implant system with 3.5 platform switch abutment was selected. ANSYS WORKBENCH was used to model all the finite element structures. Force of 100 N was tested and adapted at an angle of 0º, 15º, 30º on the tooth model. Overall results from the current study showed that a high amount of stress was seen in cortical than in relation to cancellous bone. Stress values reduced from equicrestal to subcrestal (2 mm) placement of dental implants irrespective of angulation of load from 0o to 30o in both types of bone. However higher stress values were seen when force was applied in an oblique direction (30o) in comparison to a vertical load (0o). Least amount of stress was noticed when platform switched implants were placed 0.5 mm subcrestatlly irrespective of angulations of a load. Platform switched short subcrestal implants reduced the stress in the D4 cortical bone than in contrary equicrestal implant placement. This results in the preservation of marginal bone leading to implant success.

Comparative study of stress characteristics in surrounding bone during insertion of dental implants of three different thread designs: A three-dimensional dynamic finite element study

The objective of this study is to evaluate the stress distribution characteristics around three different dental implant designs during insertion into bone, using dynamic finite element stress analysis. Dental implant placement was simulated using finite element models. Three implants with different thread and body designs (Model 1: root form implant with three different thread shapes; Model 2: tapered implant with a double-lead thread; and Model 3: conical tapered implant with a constant buttress thread) were assigned to insert into prepared bone cavity models until completely placed. Stress and strain distributions were descriptively analyzed. The von Mises stresses within the surrounding bone were measured. At the first 4-mm depth of implant insertion, maximum stress within cortical bone for Model 3 (175 MPa) was less than the other models (180 MPa each). Stress values and concentration area were increasing whereas insertion depth increased. At full implant insertion depth, maximum stress level in Model 1 (35 MPa) within the cancellous bone was slightly greater than in Models 2 (30 MPa) and 3 (25 MPa), respectively. Generally, for all simulations, the highest stress value and the location of the stress concentration area were mostly in cortical bone. However, the stress distribution patterns during the insertion process were different between the models depending on the different designs geometry that contacted the surrounding bone. Different implant designs affect different stress generation patterns during implant insertion. A range of stress magnitude, generated in the surrounding bone, may influence bone healing around dental implants and final implant stability.

A neural controller for online laser power adjustment during the heat therapy process in the presence of nanoparticles

The present research evaluated the efficiency of a control approach to control the temperature of a breast tumor mass in the presence of nanoparticles exposed to laser radiation. However, if the radiation is carried out in open loop manner it may result in excessive temperature rise healthy cells that exist in the vicinity of tumor's cells. This may lead to the death of healthy cells. So, using closed loop control methods is necessary to guarantee the preservation of healthy cells during the period of radiation. Therefore, in this study, an artificial neural network was trained as a controller. In other words, the trained neural network adjusted the laser power over a period of time in such a way that the temperature in the center of the tumor reached the desired level with an appropriate temporal behavior. The difference between the real temperature of the tumor and the desired temperature of it is the controller input, while the controller output determined the amount of laser power. The simulation studies were carried out using an appropriate physiological model in the presence of nanoparticles. First, Schrödinger equations were solved followed by the effective mass equation. Afterward the optimum number of nanoparticles to be used in the IR field was calculated. Next, the important electro-optical features related to the nanostructure, such as the absorption continuum and reflection continuum had been calculated. The neural network proposed controller was then evaluated through other simulation studies in the tumor mass model. The results showed a promising performance by the trained artificial neural network in adjusting radiated laser power for the desired temperature increase in the center of a tumor mass.

DYNAMIC SIMULATION AND FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF THE MAXILLARY BONE INJURY AROUND DENTAL IMPLANT DURING CHEWING DIFFERENT FOOD

Since a long term patency of the dental implant has a direct relationship with their biomechanical performance, it is of vital important to understand the stresses and deformations that happen during chewing around the dental implant and bone. However, this model so far has not been well realized and this is why in this study we aim to establish a Finite Element (FE) model to analyse the stresses and deformations. A trajectory approach has been used to implement the action of muscles into the mode. To do this, a cornflake bio is mounted between the teeth and force applied until the breakage of the food in mouth. Furthermore, an experimental study was performed using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method and a set of three markers used to verify the numerical observations. The results revealed that in the maxillary bones, the maximum stresses were located within the cortical bone surrounding the implant and within the neck of implant. In addition, as the elastic modulus of the food is increased the stress in cortical bone increased accordingly. The results also revealed that the highest stress in the system is 74% of the yield stress while this value has been reported as 41% in previous studies.
