On the Role of Contrast Polarity: In Response to van der Helm’s Comments

In this work, we discussed and counter-commented van der Helm’s comments on our previous paper (Pinna and Conti, Brain Sci., 2019, 9, 149), where we demonstrated unique and relevant visual properties imparted by contrast polarity in eliciting amodal completion. The main question we addressed was: “What is the role of shape formation and perceptual organization in inducing amodal completion?” To answer this question, novel stimuli were studied through Gestalt experimental phenomenology. The results demonstrated the domination of the contrast polarity against good continuation, T-junctions, and regularity. Moreover, the limiting conditions explored revealed a new kind of junction next to the T- and Y-junctions, respectively responsible for amodal completion and tessellation. We called them I-junctions. The results were theoretically discussed in relation to the previous approaches and in the light of the phenomenal salience imparted by contrast polarity. In counter-commenting van der Helm’s comments we went into detail of his critiques and rejected all of them point-by-point. We proceeded by summarizing hypotheses and discussion of the previous work, then commenting on each critique through old and new phenomena and clarifying the meaning of our previous conclusions.

Dubious Claims about Simplicity and Likelihood: Comment on Pinna and Conti (2019)

Pinna and Conti (Brain Sci., 2019, 9, 149, doi:10.3390/brainsci9060149) presented phenomena concerning the salience and role of contrast polarity in human visual perception, particularly in amodal completion. These phenomena are indeed illustrative thereof, but here, the focus is on their claims (1) that neither simplicity nor likelihood approaches can account for these phenomena; and (2) that simplicity and likelihood are equivalent. I argue that their first claim is based on incorrect assumptions, whereas their second claim is simply untrue.

Measuring the perceptual grouping of non-adjacent surfaces that are invisibly (amodally) or visibly connected

Classic Gestalt examples of perceptual grouping entail arrays of disconnected surfaces that are grouped on the basis of the surfaces' relative similarity or proximity. However, most natural environments contain multiple objects, each with multiple, connected surfaces. Moreover, an object in a scene is likely to partially occlude other objects in the 2-dimensional retinal projection of the scene. A central question, therefore, is how the visual system forms a 3-dimensional representation of multi-object scenes by determining which surfaces belong to which objects. To this end, a recently developed dynamic grouping methodology determines whether pairs of surfaces are grouped together on the basis of the direction in which motion is perceived across a surface when its luminance is perturbed. It is shown using this method that the visible surfaces of a partially occluded object are perceptually grouped when they are plausibly connected and represented in a depth plane behind the occluding object. Invisible connectivity (amodal completion) as well as connectivity established by a visible surface have a powerful influence on the grouping of surfaces. However, for neither kind of connectivity is grouping affected by the distance between the surfaces. This absence of a distance/proximity effect on grouping is obtained when the space between to-be-grouped surfaces is filled with other surfaces. It contrasts with the strong effect of distance/proximity on the grouping of disconnected surfaces, and on the clarity of illusory contours formed between disconnected contours. It is concluded that distance/proximity is an operative grouping variable only when there is empty space between the to-be-grouped surfaces.

Perceptual mechanisms underlying amodal surface integration of 3-D stereoscopic stimuli

The visual system can represent a partially occluded 3-D surface from images of separated surface segments. The underlying amodal surface integration process accomplishes this by amodally extending each surface segment behind the occluder (amodal surface extension) and integrating the extended surfaces to form a whole surface representation. We conducted five experiments to investigate how depth cues, such as binocular disparity, half-occlusion, and monocular depth cues (T-junctions and L-junctions), contribute to amodal surface extension, and how the geometrical relationship and image similarity among the surface segments affect surface integration. This was achieved by having observers adjust the stereoscopic depth and slant of a comparison stimulus to match those of the tested 3-D stimulus. We found that both binocular disparity and half-occlusion cues are used to determine border-ownership assignment of surface segments and for amodal surface extension. We also found that separated surface segments need to have the same luminance contrast-polarity for them to be integrated as a whole surface. Finally, we found that having the same motion direction, minimum misalignment between boundary contours, and proximity among separated segments facilitate their integration. Overall, our findings reveal a set of "perceptual factors" for amodal surface integration, which arguably reflects our visual system's built-in knowledge of the regularities in natural scenes.

Created unequal: Temporal dynamics of modal and amodal boundary interpolation

In this study we manipulate the distribution of contrast polarity reversals in inducing configurations to create novel variants of modal and amodal completion. The novel variants, better equated in their geometric and photometric characteristics offer a superior way to probe similarities and differences in the temporal dynamics that underlie different forms of perceptual completion. We use dot localisation to directly compare the spatial characteristics of modally and amodally interpolated contours at presentation durations ranging from 120 to 300ms and find robust differences in the spatiotemporal formation of modally and amodally completed boundaries. Modally completed contours are localised more accurately and with better spatial precision across all presentation durations. Our results challenge the assumption that the boundary interpolation system depends solely on the geometrical relatability of inducing fragments and suggest that boundary interpolation depends on the spatial distribution of local luminance relationships. As an alternative to the strong version of the identity hypothesis, we propose that modal and amodal completion are mediated by different mechanisms, triggered by particular configurations of contrast polarity.

Features of the selectivity for contrast polarity in contour integration revealed by a novel tilt illusion

We studied a novel illusion of tilt inside checkerboards due to the role of contrast polarity in contour integration. The preference for binding of oriented contours having same contrast polarity, over binding of opposite polarity ones (CP rule), has been used to explain several visual illusions. In three experiments we investigated how the binding effect is influenced by luminance contrast value, relatability of contour elements, and distance among them. Experiment 1 showed that the effect was indeed present only when the CP rule was satisfied, and found it to be stronger when the luminance contrast values of the elements are more similar. In experiment 2 the illusion was reported only with relatable edges, and its strength was modulated by the degree of relatability. The CP-rule effectiveness, thus, seems to depend on good continuation. The intensity of contrast polarity signals propagating from an oriented contour might be the less intense, the more its direction deviates from linearity. In experiment 3 we estimated the distance threshold and found it to be smaller than the one found for other illusions, arising with collinear fragments. This seems to show that the reach of the contrast polarity signal inside the association field of a contour unit is shorter along non-collinear orientations than along collinear ones.

Boundary contour-based surface integration affected by color

The visual system represents occluded surfaces by integrating the visible and partially occluded fragments with reliance on surface boundary contours. Does surface integration also depend on color similarity? Using displays with aligned images, we found the visual system has a preference to integrate images with the same color to form occluded surfaces and construct illusory occluding surfaces. This results in enhanced shape discrimination of briefly presented stimuli, and a tendency to perceive global motion of the integrated fragments. The contribution of color to surface integration is observed both in equiluminous setting and in non-equiluminous setting, where achromatic contrast exists.
