Gaze behavior during visuomotor tracking with complex hand-cursor dynamics

Age-related decline of online visuomotor adaptation: a combined effect of deteriorations of motor anticipation and execution

The literature has established that the capability of visuomotor adaptation decreases with aging. However, the underlying mechanisms of this decline are yet to be fully understood. The current study addressed this issue by examining how aging affected visuomotor adaptation in a continuous manual tracking task with delayed visual feedback. To distinguish separate contributions of the declined capability of motor anticipation and deterioration of motor execution to this age-related decline, we recorded and analyzed participants' manual tracking performances and their eye movements during tracking. Twenty-nine older people and twenty-three young adults (control group) participated in this experiment. The results showed that the age-related decline of visuomotor adaptation was strongly linked to degraded performance in predictive pursuit eye movement, indicating that declined capability motor anticipation with aging had critical influences on the age-related decline of visuomotor adaptation. Additionally, deterioration of motor execution, measured by random error after controlling for the lag between target and cursor, was found to have an independent contribution to the decline of visuomotor adaptation. Taking these findings together, we see a picture that the age-related decline of visuomotor adaptation is a joint effect of the declined capability of motor anticipation and the deterioration of motor execution with aging.

Don't watch your step: gaze behavior adapts with practice of a target stepping task

Vision plays a vital role in locomotor learning, providing feedback information to correct movement errors, and feedforward information to inform learned movement plans. Gaze behavior, or the distribution of fixation locations, can quantify how visual information is used during the motor learning process. How gaze behavior adapts during motor learning and in response to changing motor performance is poorly understood. This study examines if and how an individual's gaze behavior adapts during a sequence learning, target stepping task. We monitored the gaze behavior of 12 healthy young adults while they walked on a treadmill and attempted to precisely step on moving targets that were separated by variable distances (80%, 100%, and 120% of preferred step length). Participants completed a total of 11 trial blocks of 102 steps each. We hypothesized that both mean fixation distance would increase (participants would look farther ahead), and step error would decrease with experience. Following practice, participants significantly increased their fixation distance (P < 0.001) by 0.27 ± 0.18 steps and decreased their step error (P < 0.001) by 4.0 ± 1.7 cm, supporting our hypothesis. Our results suggest that early in the learning process, participants gaze behavior emphasized gathering visual information necessary for feedback motor control. As motor performance improved with experience, participants shifted their gaze fixation farther ahead placing greater emphasis on the visual information used for feedforward motor control. These findings provide important information about how gaze behavior changes in parallel with improvements in walking performance.NEW & NOTEWORTHY People consistently vary how they use visual information to inform walking. However, what drives this variation and how sampled visual information changes with locomotor learning is not well understood. Here, we find that gaze fixation locations moved farther ahead while step error decreases as participants practice a target stepping task. The results suggest that participants increasingly used a feedforward locomotor control strategy with practice.

Composition and decomposition of visuomotor maps during manual tracking

Adapting hand movements to changes in our body or the environment is essential for skilled motor behavior, as is the ability to flexibly combine experience gathered in separate contexts. However, it has been shown that when adapting hand movements to two different visuomotor perturbations in succession, interference effects can occur. Here, we investigate whether these interference effects compromise our ability to adapt to the superposition of the two perturbations. Participants tracked with a joystick, a visual target that followed a smooth but an unpredictable trajectory. Four separate groups of participants (total n = 83) completed one block of 50 trials under each of three mappings: one in which the cursor was rotated by 90° (ROTATION), one in which the cursor mimicked the behavior of a mass-spring system (SPRING), and one in which the SPRING and ROTATION mappings were superimposed (SPROT). The order of the blocks differed across groups. Although interference effects were found when switching between SPRING and ROTATION, participants who performed these blocks first performed better in SPROT than participants who had no prior experience with SPRING and ROTATION (i.e., composition). Moreover, participants who started with SPROT exhibited better performance under SPRING and ROTATION than participants who had no prior experience with each of these mappings (i.e., decomposition). Additional analyses confirmed that these effects resulted from components of learning that were specific to the rotational and spring perturbations. These results show that interference effects do not preclude the ability to compose/decompose various forms of visuomotor adaptation.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The ability to compose/decompose task representations is critical for both cognitive and behavioral flexibility. Here, we show that this ability extends to two forms of visuomotor adaptation in which humans have to perform visually guided hand movements. Despite the presence of interference effects when switching between visuomotor maps, we show that participants are able to flexibly compose or decompose knowledge acquired in previous sessions. These results further demonstrate the flexibility of sensorimotor adaptation in humans.

On the nature of eye-hand coordination in natural steering behavior

Eyes and hand movements are known to be coordinated during a variety of tasks. While steering a vehicle, gaze was observed to be tightly linked with steering wheel angle changes over time, with the eyes leading the hands. In this experiment, participants were asked to drive a winding road composed of bends with systematically manipulated radii of curvature, under regular and automatic steering conditions. With automatic steering, the vehicle followed the road, but the steering wheel and participants hands did not move. Despite the absence of physical eye-hand coordination in that condition, the eye and [what the hands should have done] to produce the action on the steering wheel were found to be coordinated, as under regular steering. This result brings a convincing piece of evidence that eye movements do more than just guiding the hands. In addition, eye-hand coordination was also found to be intermittent, context and person-dependant.
