Motion aftereffects specific to surface depth order: beyond binocular disparity

Neural correlates of after-effects caused by adaptation to multiple face displays

Adaptation to a given face leads to face-related, specific after-effects. Recently, this topic has attracted a lot of attention because it clearly shows that adaptation occurs even at the higher stages of visual cortical processing. However, during our every-day life, faces do not appear in isolation, rather they are usually surrounded by other stimuli. Here, we used psychophysical and fMRI adaptation methods to test whether humans adapt to the gender properties of a composite multiple face stimulus as well. As adaptors we used stimuli composed of eight different individual faces, positioned peripherally in a ring around a fixation mark. We found that the gender discrimination of a subsequent centrally presented target face is significantly biased as a result of long-term adaptation to either male or female multiple face stimuli. Similar to our previous results with single-face adaptors (Kovács et al. in Neuroimage 43(1):156-164, 2008), a concurrent functional magnetic resonance imaging adaptation experiment revealed the strongest blood oxygen level-dependent signal adaptation bilaterally in the fusiform face area. Our results suggest that humans extract the statistical features of the multiple face stimulus and this process occurs at the level of occipito-temporal face processing.

Evidence for joint encoding of motion and disparity in human visual perception

Electrophysiological recordings have established that motion and disparity signals are jointly encoded by subpopulations of neurons in visual cortex. However, the question of whether these neurons play a perceptual role has proven challenging and remains open. To answer this question we combined two powerful psychophysical techniques: perceptual adaptation and reverse correlation. Our results provide a detailed picture of how visual information about motion and disparity is processed by human observers, and how this processing is modified by prolonged sensory stimulation. We were able to isolate two perceptual components: a separable component, supported by separate motion and disparity signals, and an inseparable joint component, supported by motion and disparity signals that are concurrently represented at the level of the same neural mechanism. Both components are involved in the perception of stimuli containing motion and disparity information in line with the known existence of corresponding neuronal subpopulations in visual cortex.

General validity of Levelt's propositions reveals common computational mechanisms for visual rivalry

The mechanisms underlying conscious visual perception are often studied with either binocular rivalry or perceptual rivalry stimuli. Despite existing research into both types of rivalry, it remains unclear to what extent their underlying mechanisms involve common computational rules. Computational models of binocular rivalry mechanisms are generally tested against Levelt's four propositions, describing the psychophysical relation between stimulus strength and alternation dynamics in binocular rivalry. Here we use a bistable rotating structure-from-motion sphere, a generally studied form of perceptual rivalry, to demonstrate that Levelt's propositions also apply to the alternation dynamics of perceptual rivalry. Importantly, these findings suggest that bistability in structure-from-motion results from active cross-inhibition between neural populations with computational principles similar to those present in binocular rivalry. Thus, although the neural input to the computational mechanism of rivalry may stem from different cortical neurons and different cognitive levels the computational principles just prior to the production of visual awareness appear to be common to the two types of rivalry.
