Enhanced luminance sensitivity on color and luminance pedestals: Threshold measurements and a model of parvocellular luminance processing

Binocular integration of chromatic and luminance signals

Much progress has been made in understanding how the brain combines signals from the two eyes. However, most of this work has involved achromatic (black and white) stimuli, and it is not clear if the same processes apply in color-sensitive pathways. In our first experiment, we measured contrast discrimination ("dipper") functions for four key ocular configurations (monocular, binocular, half-binocular, and dichoptic), for achromatic, isoluminant L-M and isoluminant S-(L+M) sine-wave grating stimuli (L: long-, M: medium-, S: short-wavelength). We find a similar pattern of results across stimuli, implying equivalently strong interocular suppression within each pathway. Our second experiment measured dichoptic masking within and between pathways using the method of constant stimuli. Masking was strongest within-pathway and weakest between S-(L+M) and achromatic mechanisms. Finally, we repeated the dipper experiment using temporal luminance modulations, which produced slightly weaker interocular suppression than for spatially modulated stimuli. We interpret our results in the context of a contemporary two-stage model of binocular contrast gain control, implemented here using a hierarchical Bayesian framework. Posterior distributions of the weight of interocular suppression overlapped with a value of 1 for all dipper data sets, and the model captured well the pattern of thresholds from all three experiments.

Visual Neurophysiological Biomarkers for Patient Stratification and Treatment Development Across Neuropsychiatric Disorders

The human visual system begins in the retina and projects to cortex through both the thalamocortical and retinotectal visual pathways. The thalamocortical system is divided into separate magnocellular and parvocellular divisions, which engage separate layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and project preferentially to the dorsal and ventral visual streams, respectively. The retinotectal system, in contrast, projects to the superior colliculus, pulvinar nucleus of the thalamus and amygdala. The pulvinar nucleus also plays a critical role in the integration of information processing across early visual regions.The functions of the visual system can be assessed using convergent EEG- and functional brain imaging approaches, increasingly supplemented by simultaneously collected eye-tracking information. These approaches may be used for tracing the flow of information from retina through early visual regions, as well as the contribution of these regions to higher-order cognitive processing. A pathway of increasing interest in relationship to neuropsychiatric disorders is the primate-specific "third visual pathway" that relies extensively on motion-related input and contributes preferentially to social information processing. Thus, disturbances in the brain's responsiveness to motion stimuli may be especially useful as biomarkers for early visual dysfunction related to impaired social cognition.Visual event-related potentials (ERPs) can be collected with high-fidelity and have proven effective for the study of neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease, in which alterations in visual processing may occur early in the disorder, andautism-spectrum disorder (ASD), in which abnormal persistence of early childhood patterns may persist into adulthood, leading to impaired functioning of visual social pathways. The utility of visual ERPs as biomarkers for larger clinical studies is limited at present by the need for standardization of visual stimuli across laboratories, which requires specialized protocols and equipment. The development of optimized stimulation protocols as well as newer headset-based systems may increase the clinical utility of present stimulation approaches.

Varying test-pattern duration to explore the dynamics of contrast-comparison and contrast-normalization processes

In this paper, we examine the dynamics of contrast-comparison and contrast-normalization processes. Observers adapted (for 1 second) to a grid of Gabor patches at one contrast; then a test pattern (which varied in duration from 12 ms to 3012 ms) was shown; and then the adapt pattern was shown again (1 second). All the Gabor patches in all the adapt patterns had 50% contrast. The test pattern was the same as the adapt pattern except that the Gabor patches in the test pattern had two different contrasts; the test contrasts varied from row to row (horizontal test pattern) or column to column (vertical test pattern). The task was to identify the orientation of the contrast variation in the test pattern (in other words, the observer performed a second-order orientation identification task). The two contrasts in each test pattern were varied while keeping the difference between the two contrasts constant. We have previously found that the observer's performance is poor for test patterns containing contrasts both above and below the adapt patterns' contrast (what we have called the "straddle effect") when the test duration is approximately 100 ms. Here, we find the straddle effect persists at all test durations we used. Other features of the results varied dramatically with test duration. We find that a simple model containing contrast-comparison and contrast-normalization processes provides a good explanation for the psychophysical results. The results provide some insight into the dynamics of these processes.

Linking perceived to physical contrast: Comparing results from discrimination and difference-scaling experiments

Psychophysical approaches that allow us to estimate how perceived stimulus intensity is linked to physical intensity are import tools for studying nonlinear transformations of visual signals within different visual pathways. Here, we investigated how stimulus contrast is encoded in achromatic and chromatic pathways using simple grating stimuli. We compared two experimental approaches to this question: contrast discrimination (increment detection thresholds measured on contrast pedestals) and the maximum likelihood difference scaling (MLDS) approach introduced by Maloney and Yang (2003). The results of both experiments are expressed using simple models that include a transducer function mapping physical contrast to an internal signal the observer uses in making judgments, and an estimate of the variability of this representation (internal "noise"). We found that the transducers derived from both experiments have a similar form, but occupy different ranges of physical contrast in different stimulus conditions, reflecting difference in contrast sensitivity. This is consistent with past discrimination results, and in the difference-scaling case provides new evidence supporting the idea that suprathreshold chromatic and achromatic contrast are processed similarly, once differences in contrast sensitivity are taken into account. Model estimates of internal noise were higher in the difference-scaling experiment than the discrimination experiment, a finding we attribute to a difference in task complexity. Finally, we fit an alternative version of the MLDS model in which internal noise increased with response level. This alternative was no better at predicting holdout data in a cross-validation analysis than the original constant-variance model.
