Adaptive Resolution Enhancement for Visual Attention Regions Based on Spatial Interpolation

Resolution enhancement is crucial for human vision. However, it can be resource-consuming in the display pipeline. Therefore, there is a need to develop a lightweight resolution improvement algorithm specifically targeting visual attention regions. This paper presents a spatial-interpolation-based algorithm to improve the resolution of the visual attention area. The eye-tracking system consists of a near-infrared camera and an event camera is proposed to obtain the 3D gaze vector and eye moving trajectory. Secondly, the observation coordinates are obtained by gaze vectors, and the visual attention region is defined by the sensitive field-of-view angle. Then, interpolation-based adaptive spatial resolution enhancement and contrast enhancement adjustment are performed in the visual attention area. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method is tested on both qualitative and quantitative dimensions. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve the visual effects.

Hierarchical Bayesian perceptual template modeling of mechanisms of spatial attention in central and peripheral cuing

The external noise paradigm and perceptual template model (PTM) have successfully been applied to characterize observer properties and mechanisms of observer state changes (e.g. attention and perceptual learning) in several research domains, focusing on individual level analysis. In this study, we developed a new hierarchical Bayesian perceptual template model (HBPTM) to model the trial-by-trial data from all individuals and conditions in a published spatial cuing study within a single structure and compared its performance to that of a Bayesian Inference Procedure (BIP), which separately infers the posterior distributions of the model parameters for each individual subject without the hierarchical structure. The HBPTM allowed us to compute the joint posterior distribution of the hyperparameters and parameters at the population, observer, and experiment levels and make statistical inferences at all these levels. In addition, we ran a large simulation study that varied the number of observers and number of trials in each condition and demonstrated the advantage of the HBPTM over the BIP across all the simulated datasets. Although it is developed in the context of spatial attention, the HBPTM and its extensions can be used to model data from the external noise paradigm in other domains and enable predictions of human performance at both the population and individual levels.

Modeling eye movement in dynamic interactive tasks for maximizing situation awareness based on Markov decision process

For complex dynamic interactive tasks (such as aviating), operators need to continuously extract information from areas of interest (AOIs) through eye movement to maintain high level of situation awareness (SA), as failures of SA may cause task performance degradation, even system accident. Most of the current eye movement models focus on either static tasks (such as image viewing) or simple dynamic tasks (such as video watching), without considering SA. In this study, an eye movement model with the goal of maximizing SA is proposed based on Markov decision process (MDP), which is designed to describe the dynamic eye movement of experienced operators in dynamic interactive tasks. Two top-down factors, expectancy and value, are introduced into this model to represent the update probability and the importance of information in AOIs, respectively. In particular, the model regards sequence of eye fixations to different AOIs as sequential decisions to maximize the SA-related reward (value) in the context of uncertain information update (expectancy). Further, this model was validated with a flight simulation experiment.
