Development and evolution of the vestibular apparatuses of the inner ear

The vertebrate inner ear is a labyrinthine sensory organ responsible for perceiving sound and body motion. While a great deal of research has been invested in understanding the auditory system, a growing body of work has begun to delineate the complex developmental program behind the apparatuses of the inner ear involved with vestibular function. These animal studies have helped identify genes involved in inner ear development and model syndromes known to include vestibular dysfunction, paving the way for generating treatments for people suffering from these disorders. This review will provide an overview of known inner ear anatomy and function and summarize the exciting discoveries behind inner ear development and the evolution of its vestibular apparatuses.

Prediction of a state of a subject on the basis of a stabilogram signal and video oculography test

Postural stability decreases with ageing and may lead to accidental falls, isolation and a reduction in the quality of life. The age at the onset of postural derangement, its extent and the reason for deterioration are poorly known within an individual, but in general it becomes more severe with age. In order to prevent falls and avoid severe injuries the postural derangement has to be noticed by the person and the possible nursing personnel. In this work we propose such numerical features, which can discriminate the persons having good or poor postural stability. These features can also be utilized to measure the outcome and progression of balance training. With these postural stability algorithms providing stability features for a subject we managed to classify correctly the type of stance on the force platform in more than 80% of sixty subjects. We used k-nearest neighbor algorithm as an intuitive baseline method and compared its results with those of support vector machines and hidden Markov models.

Connexin 26 mutations in nonsyndromic autosomal recessive hearing loss: speech and hearing rehabilitation

OBJECTIVE

Hearing loss is the most common form of sensory impairment, with approximately one infant/1000 born with profound congenital deafness. A pre-lingual bilateral sensorineural hearing impairment poses a substantial problem as it negatively impacts on the subject's ability to conduct a normal social life. The aim of the study was to observe, in a group of children affected by pre-lingual non-syndromic autosomal recessive hearing impairment: (1) the role of the possible mutation of connexin 26 in the pathogenesis of the hearing loss; (2) the audiological and clinical aspects of the hearing impairment; (3) therapy to be adopted for the different patients.

METHODS

The study was carried out on 39 patients, 16 males and 23 females, aged between six and 17 years (mean 12 years), affected by non syndromic congenital deafness, presumably hereditary, referred to the out-patients audiology clinic for children of the Department of Otolaryngology of the Federico II University of Naples.

RESULTS

Our study conducted on 39 children with pre-lingual bilateral sensorineural autosomal recessive deafness showed as follows: (I) from a molecular perspective: an incidence of 41% in the cases studied of mutations in the encoding of the connexin 26 gene; a prevalence in our case study of the 35delG mutation (69%). (II) The characteristics of the hearing impairments in the children studied were homogeneous, regardless of the presence or absence of a connexin 26 mutation: the hearing impairment was pre-lingual bilateral sensorineural, the impairment often involved mainly the high frequencies, but, especially in the severe forms an involvement of all the frequencies was not rare; the hearing impairments were symmetrical and non progressive in time. (III) The results of the application of prosthesis and thereafter rehabilitative language therapy are generally satisfactory but correlated of course to the severity of the hearing loss.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, we hope that further developments in the research on genetic hearing impairments will promptly result in advances in clinical practice.

Perda auditiva genética

O progresso das pesquisas relacionadas à perda auditiva genética tem provocado um importante avanço do entendimento dos mecanismos moleculares que governam o desenvolvimento, a função, a resposta ao trauma e o envelhecimento do ouvido interno. Em países desenvolvidos, mais de 50% dos casos de surdez na infância é causada por alterações genéticas e as perdas auditivas relacionadas à idade têm sido associadas com mecanismos genéticos. OBJETIVO: O objetivo desta revisão é relatar as informações mais recentes relacionadas às perdas audtivas de origem genética. FORAMA DE ESTUDO: Revisão sistemática. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: A revisão da literatura inclui artigos indexados à MEDLINE (Biblioteca Nacional de Saúde, NIH-USA) e publicados nos últimos 3 anos, além das informações disponíveis na Hereditary Hearing Loss Home Page. CONCLUSÃO: Os recentes avanços no entendimento das perdas auditivas de origem genética têm favorecido a nossa compreensão da função auditiva e tornado o diagnóstico mais apurado. Possivelmente, no futuro, este conhecimento também proporcionará o desenvolvimento de novas terapias para o tratamento das causas genéticas das perdas auditivas.
