Abstract
Red cell distribution width (RDW) serves as an independent predictor towards the prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A systematic search of databases such as PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane library was performed on October 10th, 2019, to elaborate the relationship between RDW and in hospital and long term follow up, all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and development of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in patients with CAD undergoing PCI. Twenty-one studies qualified this strict selection criterion (number of patients = 56,425): one study was prospective, and the rest were retrospective cohorts. Our analysis showed that patients undergoing PCI with high RDW had a significantly higher risk of in-hospital all-cause mortality (OR 2.41), long-term all-cause mortality (OR 2.44), cardiac mortality (OR 2.65), MACE (OR: 2.16), and odds of developing CIN (OR: 1.42) when compared to the patients with low RDW. Therefore, incorporating RDW in the predictive models for the development of CIN, MACE, and mortality can help in triage to improve the outcomes in coronary artery disease patients who undergo PCI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Contrast-enhanced computed tomography angiography (CTA) is commonly used to investigate acute abdominal conditions, but the risk of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) has been poorly investigated in patients with acute mesenteric ischemia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the incidence of CI-AKI in these patients and identify potential predictive factors. METHODS Patients admitted for acute mesenteric ischemia who had a diagnostic CTA with contrast medium and a follow-up of creatinine concentration were retrospectively included. RESULTS Among 53 patients included, 9 (16.9%) developed CI-AKI. The prevalence of chronic kidney disease did not differ significantly between those who developed CI-AKI and those who did not (33.3 vs 18.2%, p=.372). Plasma total bilirubin and conjugated bilirubin levels were significantly higher in patients who developed CI-AKI (17.5 vs 8.0 μmol/L, p=.013 and 8.0 vs 3.0 μmol/L, p=.031, respectively). The proportion of patients who had revascularization was similar between patients who developed CI-AKI and those who did not (11.1 vs 20.5%, p>.999). No significant difference was observed for 30-day mortality and all-cause mortality for a median follow-up of 168 days (22.2 vs 13.6%, p=.611; and 33.3 vs 61.4%, p=.153, respectively). CONCLUSION This study reports the incidence of CI-AKI in patients with acute mesenteric ischemia after diagnostic CTA with contrast medium. Plasma bilirubin levels were a predictive factor of CI-AKI in these patients. The administration of contrast media during revascularization was not associated with an increased risk of CI-AKI.

Abstract
Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is an important complication of iodinated contrast medium (CM) administration, which is associated with both short- and long-term adverse outcomes (e.g., cardiorenal events, longer hospital stay, and mortality). CIN has been mainly studied in relation to cardiac procedures, but it can also occur following non-cardiac vascular interventions. This is Part 1 of a narrative review summarizing the available literature on CIN after non-cardiac vascular diagnostic or therapeutic procedures for aortic aneurysm and carotid stenosis. We discuss the definition, pathophysiology, incidence, risk factors, biomarkers, and consequences of CIN in these settings, as well as preventive strategies and alternatives to limit iodinated CM use. Physicians and vascular surgeons should be aware of CM-related adverse events and the potential strategies to avoid them. Clearly, more research in this important field is required.

Abstract
Strong inflammatory indicators such as C-reactive protein (CRP), high-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP), and hematological indices, including platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), hematocrit (HCT), and red blood cell distribution width (RDW), may be related with contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). Our meta-analysis aimed at exploring the relationship between these indicators and CIN incidence among patients undergoing coronary intervention. Clinical studies were retrieved from the electronic databases of PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Clinical Trials, and Science Direct from their inception to June 3, 2020. Meta-analysis was performed on pooled eligible studies. Finally, 26 studies involving 29 454 patients were included. Pooled analysis revealed that patients with higher CRP (odds ratio [OR] = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.01-1.12, P = .02), hsCRP (OR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.01-1.06, P = .004), NLR (OR = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.01-1.20, P = .02), RDW (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.19-1.53, P < .001), and lower HCT (OR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.92-0.97, P = .003) all exhibited significantly higher CIN rates, but there was no significant association between PLR and CIN risk (OR = 1.12, 95% CI: 0.99-1.26, P = .07). Pre-angiography CRP/hsCRP and some hematological indices are associated with CIN.

Abstract
PURPOSE Erectile dysfunction (ED) has increased prevalence by age and significantly affects the quality of life of men and their partners. To investigate the relationship between ED and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) values. MATERIALS AND METHOD Between September 2019 and December 2019, a total of 192 individuals comprising those that were admitted to the urology outpatient clinic with ED complaints and healthy volunteers from among hospital staff were prospectively included in the study. The participants were divided into two groups according to the international erectile function index (IIEF-5) as ED group (n=148) and control group (n=44). RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of age, smoking status, presence of hypertension, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, total prostate-specific antigen and haematocrit values. Body mass index, fasting blood sugar, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were significantly higher in the ED group (28.5±27.4kg/m2 vs 26.8±26.5kg/m2, p=.021, 109.05±49.7mg/dl vs 93.39±10.2mg/dl, p<.001, 2.18±1.3 vs 1.74±0.3, p=.031, and 113.7±47 vs 92.4±24.1, p=.004, respectively). The mean RDW values were 13.7±1.1 in the ED group and 13±0.5 in the control group (p<.001). The multivariate analysis revealed PLR [1.02 OR (1-1.04), p=.007] and RDW [2.75 OR (1.56-4.85), p<.001] as independent predictors for an ED diagnosis. CONCLUSION Based on the strong relationship between RDW and ED, we consider that RDW may be a new indicator in the diagnosis of ED.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Red cell distribution width (RDW) has been reported to be involved in metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular events. Patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN) are often found to be with high level of RDW. The aim of this study was to explore whether RDW was associated with DN severity and progression in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS A total of 175 T2DM patients with biopsy-proven DN were enrolled. The baseline clinical and pathologic data of these patients was extracted from the medical records. The patients then were divided into two groups based on the median (13.6%) of RDW level; group 1: <13.6% and group 2: ≥13.6%. The effect of RDW level on the renal outcomes was evaluated by using cox regression analysis. RESULTS Compared with the patients with lower RDW level, the patients with higher level of RDW had higher proportions of female, longer DM duration, lower levels of eGFR, albumin and hemoglobin, and more serious glomerular damage. Moreover, the RDW levels were negatively corrected with eGFR (r = -0.283, p < 0.001), but positively related with proteinuria (r = 0.227, p = 0.003). In the follow-up period, 81(46.3%) patients had reached ESRD from baseline. Importantly, the Cox regression analyses showed that the levels of RDM had a significant effect on the risk of progression to ESRD (HR = 1.92, p < 0.01), albeit not emerged as an independent predictor. CONCLUSIONS These data indicated that the levels of RDW were significantly associated with increased risk of progression to ESRD in patients with DN, despite did not an independent predictor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Red cell distribution width (RDW) is associated with a poor prognosis and adverse events in cardiovascular diseases. The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship between serum RDW levels and outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention and to identify potential novel laboratory markers for evaluating the risk of in-stent restenosis (ISR) with stable angina pectoris. METHODS A total of 261 patients with coronary heart disease from Dongfeng General Hospital implanted with a coronary drug-eluting stent (DES) were enrolled in the study. We retrospectively analysed the role and prognosis values of serum parameters that were measured before angiography at the first admission. According to the results of the second angiogram, the patients were divided into two groups as follows: the non-ISR group (n=143) and the ISR group (n=118). The clinical characteristics and all laboratory data were considered for univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. RESULTS The white cell count, RDW, neutrophil count, C-reactive protein (CRP), total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), blood urea nitrogen and uric acid levels were higher in the ISR group than in the non-ISR group. There were no differences in the rates of hypertension, fasting plasma glucose, red cell count, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, platelet count, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and creatinine levels. In the univariate regression analysis, age, diabetes, white cell count, neutrophil count, RDW, CRP, total cholesterol, LDL-C, blood urea nitrogen, Gensini score and number of stents were predictors of ISR. According to the multiple logistic regression analysis, age, RDW and number of stents were independent predictors of ISR. CONCLUSIONS Preprocedural blood parameters can independently predict ISR. Our study results demonstrated that a high preprocedural RDW is an independent predictor of DES restenosis.

Abstract
Objectives: Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) accounts for 10% of all causes of hospital-acquired renal failure. The pathophysiological cellular mechanism of the CIN development remains unclear and seems to be multifactorial. Herein, we aimed to determine the role of red cell distribution width (RDW) in the development of CIN after elective percutaneous intervention in patients with stable coronary artery disease, which in our opinion has not been researched enough. Methods: Between October 2009 and October 2011, a total of 211 patients with stable coronary artery disease who had undergone a coronary intervention procedure were evaluated prospectively. The patients were classified according to the development of CIN, and both groups were compared statistically according to clinical, laboratory, and demographic features, including the serum RDW level. Results: In 18.8% of the patients, CIN was observed. The mean age was 64±10.5, and 59% of the study group was male. An advanced age, male gender, hypertension, the serum total protein level, high density lipoprotein, and albumin levels were correlated with the development of CIN. The mean RDW level was 13.7±1.4%, and the mean creatinine level was 1.0±0.2 mg/dL. There was not any correlation between RDW and the presence of CIN (CIN[−]=13.8±1.5, CIN[+]=13.6±1.0, p>0.05), and also a multivariate regression analysis proved this non-correlation (OR : 0.92, 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.62–1.34; p: 0.67 ). There was only a correlation between hypertension and male gender with CIN that was proved with a multivariate regression analysis (OR=5.74, 95% CI: 1.96–16.79, p<0.01 vs OR=5.34, 95% CI=1.22–23.3, p: 0.02, respectively). Conclusion: Our outcomes indicate that the RDW has a limited use as a CIN predictor in patients with stable coronary artery disease.

Abstract
Background The aim of the study was to explore associations between elevated red cell distribution width (RDW) and acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing cardiac surgery (CS-AKI). Methods Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative data of 10,274 patients undergoing cardiac surgery, including demographic data, were prospectively collected from January 2009 to December 2014. Propensity score matching was used on the basis of clinical characteristics and preoperative variables. An elevated RDW was defined as the difference between RDW 24 h after cardiac surgery and the latest RDW before cardiac surgery. Results A total of 10,274 patients were included in the unmatched cohort, and 3146 patients in the propensity-matched cohort. In the unmatched cohort, the overall CS-AKI incidence was 32.8% (n = 3365) with a hospital mortality of 5.5% (n = 185). In the propensity-matched cohort, the elevated RDW in AKI patients was higher than in patients without AKI (0.3% (0.0%, 0.7%) vs 0.5% (0.1, 1.1%), P < 0.001) and the elevated RDW incidences were 0.4% (0.1%, 0.9%), 0.6% (0.2%, 1.1%) and 1.1% (0.3%, 2.1%) in stage 1, 2 and 3 AKI patients (P < 0.001). Among propensity-matched patients with CS-AKI, the level of elevated RDW in non-survivors was higher than in survivors [1.2% (0.5%, 2.3%) vs 0.5% (0.1%, 1.0%), P < 0.001] and a 0.1% increase in elevated RDW was associated with a 0.24% higher risk of within-hospital mortality in patients with CS-AKI. Estimating the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) area under the curve (AUC) showed that an elevated RDW had moderate discriminative power for AKI development (AUC = 0.605, 95% CI, 0.586–0.625; P < 0.001) and hospital mortality (AUC = 0.716, 95% CI, 0.640–0.764; P < 0.001) in the propensity-matched cohort. Conclusions An elevated RDW might be an independent prognostic factor for the severity and poor prognosis of CS-AKI.

Abstract
Background: Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is a relatively reversible cause of acute kidney injury (AKI) that occurs after radiocontrast media administration. It is a common complication after percutaneous coronary intervention, especially in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The aim of this study is to determine the utility of red cell distribution width (RDW) in predicting CI-AKI in patients with ACS and to determine the value of adding RDW to the Mehran risk score (MRS) on admission. Methods: A total of 161 patients who presented with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) or non-STEMI were identified retrospectively between January 2015 and December 2016. Patients were divided into two groups, those who developed CI-AKI after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and those who did not. Results: A total of 161 patients were analyzed. Of them, 12 developed CI-AKI (eight presented with STEMI and four presented with non-STEMI). RDW did not correlate with the development of CI-AKI (14.55 ± 1.48 vs 14.83 ± 1.21; p = 0.072). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) for RDW, MRS, and the combined model (MRS and RDW) for the prediction of CI-AKI were 0.721 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.645 to 0.788; p=0.0024), 0.885 (95% CI, 0.825 to 0.930; p<0.0001), 0.890 (95% CI, 0.831 to 0.933; p<0.0001), respectively. Pairwise comparisons between ROCs for MRS vs the combined model yielded a non-significant p-value of 0.49. This signifies no added benefit for RDW to MRS for predicting CI-AKI. Conclusion: RDW does not correlate with the development of CI-AKI in patients with ACS. The Mehran risk score remains a better indicator of CI-AKI risk assessment with no role for the addition of RDW to it. Further studies are needed to better assess predictors of CI-AKI in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.

Abstract
Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is associated with worse prognosis in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Early identification and intervention for patients with a high risk of CIN are very important to improve clinical outcomes. Inflammation plays important role in the development of CIN in the setting of ACS. The monocyte to high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR) is a novel inflammatory marker. Bleeding is also associated with worse prognosis in such patients. We aimed to investigate whether the preprocedural MHR had a predictive role for CIN development in such patients. In addition, using the thrombolysis in myocardial infarction classification, we aimed to assess whether there was any relationship between bleeding and CIN. A total of 647 patients (496 males; age: 63.3 ± 12.7 years) with ACS who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were included in the study. Seventy patients (10.8%) had developed CIN. Age, diabetes mellitus, contrast volume, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and MHR were independent predictors for CIN. Preprocedural MHR may be used as a simple marker of CIN. It may help with the early identification of patients with ACS who underwent PCI who are at high risk of CIN thus allowing the planning of protective measures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Red cell distribution width (RDW) is an emerging marker of inflammation and a predictor of high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality as well as all-cause mortality. A previous cross-sectional study showed that RDW was associated with microalbuminuria, an indicator of target organ damage. However, the longitudinal association of RDW and development of albuminuria is not known. METHODS We analyzed 83,040 participants without chronic kidney disease (CKD) at baseline who underwent two health check-ups at a 4-year interval during 2005 to 2014. Urine albumin was determined by single urine dipstick semi-quantitative analysis, and incident albuminuria was defined as ≥ 1+ dipstick albumin at the second check-up. We used logistic regression analysis to determine the relationship between RDW and incident albuminuria. RESULTS Participants were divided into quartiles according to baseline RDW. After 4 years, 982 cases of incident albuminuria were observed. The cumulative incidences of albuminuria were 0.94, 1.05, 1.18, and 1.62% for the 1st through 4th quartiles of RDW, respectively. Multivariate logistic analysis showed that the odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for incident albuminuria compared to those in the 1st quartile were 1.11 (0.92-1.34), 1.26 (1.04-1.52), and 1.88 (1.58-2.24) for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quartiles, respectively. CONCLUSION RDW was associated with development of albuminuria in relatively healthy Korean adults without CKD. Further research is needed to verify the role of RDW in the development of albuminuria and renal injury.

Abstract
We investigated the relationship between platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI). We enrolled 5719 patients in 3 tertiary hospitals from January 2005 to December 2010. The PLR was calculated as the ratio of platelet to lymphocyte counts on admission. Serum creatinine level was measured before and within 72 hours after contrast medium administration. To evaluate the relation between PLR and CIN, the 5719 patients were divided into a CIN group and a non-CIN group. Contrast-induced nephropathy occurred in 252 (4.4%) patients. Patients in the CIN group had significantly higher PLR than those in the non-CIN group (173.8 [62.3] and 116.2 [51.7], respectively; P < .001). In logistic regression analysis, PLR was an independent predictor of CIN (odds ratio: 1.432, 95% confidence interval: 1.205-1.816, P = .031), along with age, diabetes mellitus, creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio. In conclusion, a higher PLR was an independent risk factor for the development of CIN in patients with STEMI undergoing pPCI.

Abstract
AIM: The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) and Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW) in the differential diagnosis and follow-up of patients with Bells Palsy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients diagnosed with Bells Palsy and 28 control patients were included in the study. Serum samples were analysed retrospectively on the initial presentation and the seventh day of admission. RESULTS: On admission, the NLR was 1.7±1.2. The mean absolute neutrophil count was 6100 ± 900/mm^3 in Bells Palsy Group. NLR was 0.9 ± 0.2. The mean absolute neutrophil count was 4400 ± 1100/mm^3 in control group. Statistically, significant changes were not observed in NLR, PLR, MPV and RDW measurements in Bells Palsy group between House-Brackman Staging. CONCLUSION: Statistically significant changes in the neutrophil count and NLR were determined in the measurements between Bells Palsy and control group (p = 0.013, p = 0.016 respectively) on admission. A grade of the disease and NLR measurements had no statistically significant connection. RDW value was investigated for the first time in the literature for Bells Palsy patients.

Subjects were categorized into two groups; as patients who developed CIN (CIN+) and patients who did not develop CIN (CIN–) during hospitalization. CIN was defined as either a 25% increase in serum creatinine from baseline or 44.20 µmol/L increase in absolute value, within 72 h of intravenous contrast administration.
Results:
A total number of 209 patients were included in the study. Thirty-two patients developed CIN (15.3%). In the CIN (+) patients, monocytes were higher [1.02 (0.83–1.39) vs. 0.69 (0.53–0.90) 109/L, p<0.01] and HDL cholesterol levels were lower [0.88 (0.78–1.01) vs. 0.98 (0.88–1.14) mmol/L, p<0.01]. In addition, MHR was significantly higher in the CIN (+) group [1.16 (0.89–2.16) vs. 0.72 (0.53–0.95) 109/mmol, p<0.01]. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, MHR, Mehran score, AGEF score and CV/eGFR were independently correlated with CIN.
Conclusions:
Higher MHR levels may predict CIN development after primary PCI in STEMI patients.

Abstract
The relationship between contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) and oxidative mechanisms is well documented. Our aim was to demonstrate the possible relationship between CIN and serum bilirubin as an antioxidant molecule. This retrospective study included 359 patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) who underwent peripheral diagnostic angiography; 179 developed CIN after the intervention and another 180 were the control group, matched for age, gender, and cardiovascular risk factors. Baseline, 48- to 72-hour, and 30-day laboratory values, major adverse cardiovascular events, and dialysis requirements were recorded. Patients with CIN had significantly higher levels of uric acid, red cell distribution width, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) but lower total bilirubin compared to the control patients ( P < .05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that diabetes mellitus, left ventricular ejection fraction, uric acid, NLR, and total bilirubin levels were independent predictors of CIN development ( P = .01, P = .001, P = .001, P = .01, and P = .001, respectively). This study demonstrated that decreased total bilirubin was associated with CIN development after the administration of radiocontrast agents in patients with PAD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is associated with poor clinical outcomes in various cardiovascular diseases, including acute coronary syndromes. However, the relationship between NLR and contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in patients with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has not been known. Hence, we investigated whether admission NLR is associated with CIN after PCI in patients with NSTE-ACS. METHODS A total of 478 patients (mean age 62.8±12.6 years, and 64.2% men), who were admitted to our hospital for NSTEACS and underwent PCI with stent, were recruited. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was calculated via dividing neutrophil count by lymphocyte count. The patients were divided into two groups: CIN (+) and CIN (-). Contrast-induced nephropathy was defined as a ≥0.5mg/dL and/or a ≥25% increase in serum creatinine within 48-72hours post-PCI. RESULTS Admission NLR was significantly higher in patients with CIN than in patients without CIN (median 5.43, interquartile range 3.23-7.73 vs. median 2.59, interquartile range 1.83-3.88, P<0.001). On multivariate analysis, NLR ≥ 3.46 value (OR=2.631, 95%CI 1.146-6.060, P=0.022), estimated glomerular filtration rate (OR=0.963, P=0.004), high sensitivity C-reactive protein (OR=1.028, P=0.016) were independent factors of CIN. CONCLUSION Increased NLR is independently associated with risk of CIN in NSTE-ACS patients treated by PCI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In the present study, the association between red cell distribution width (RDW) with functional significance of intermediate coronary artery lesions was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two hundred and forty-six consecutive patients, 168 males and 78 females, who underwent fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurement for angiographically intermediate coronary stenosis (40-70% in quantitative coronary analysis) in the left anterior descending coronary artery were enrolled into the study. The functional significance of intermediate coronary artery lesions was determined by FFR measurement. An FFR value <0.75 was defined as functionally significant. Venous blood samples were taken within 48 h before the FFR measurement, and RDW levels were determined by a Coulter LH Series hematology analyzer. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between functional significance in FFR measurement and other variables. RESULTS Of the 246 patients, 62 (25.2%) exhibited significant functional stenosis (FFR <0.75) in the FFR measurement. The mean RDW level was significantly higher in patients with significant stenosis (14.19 ± 0.73 vs. 13.69 ± 0.77, p < 0.001). In stepwise multivariate logistic regression analysis, RDW (OR = 2.489, 95% CI = 1.631-3.799, p < 0.001) and male gender (OR = 2.826, 95% CI = 1.347-5.928, p = 0.006) were independent predictors of significant functional stenosis. CONCLUSION Increased RDW levels were associated with functional significance of angiographically intermediate coronary artery stenoses.

Abstract
Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of red blood cell volume variations (anisocytosis) and is reported as part of a standard complete blood count. In recent years, numerous studies have noted the importance of RDW as a predictor of poor clinical outcomes in the settings of various diseases, including coronary artery disease (CAD). In this paper, we discuss the prognostic value of RDW in CAD and describe the pathophysiological connection between RDW and acute coronary syndrome. In our opinion, the negative prognostic effects of elevated RDW levels may be attributed to the adverse effects of independent risk factors such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and vitamin D3 and iron deficiency on bone marrow function (erythropoiesis). Elevated RDW values may reflect the intensity of these phenomena and their unfavorable impacts on bone marrow erythropoiesis. Furthermore, decreased red blood cell deformability among patients with higher RDW values impairs blood flow through the microcirculation, resulting in the diminution of oxygen supply at the tissue level, particularly among patients suffering from myocardial infarction treated with urgent revascularization.

Abstract
Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) represents an important adverse effect of contrast media (CM) administration. Contrast-induced nephropathy is associated with prolonged hospitalization as well as increased cardiovascular morbidity, renal morbidity, and all-cause mortality. Several risk factors may predict CIN incidence, and various scores and ratios have been proposed to identify high-risk patients. Novel biomarkers may provide an earlier diagnosis of CIN. A multifactorial approach is required for CIN prevention including hydration, administration of low- or iso-osmolar CM, minimizing CM volume, and statin administration. Renal function may deteriorate after CM administration, even in the absence of CIN. Therefore, this deterioration may not be an “all or none” phenomenon; it may well occur in many patients receiving CM, with/without CIN, and may prove to be an underestimated risk factor. Patients should be followed up for longer periods as outpatients after CM exposure to assess kidney function and predict subsequent increased morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
The incidence of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is rising due to increased use of coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention. Many agents, including statins, have been evaluated in several studies for the prevention of CI-AKI. To date, there have been 14 prospective randomized studies regarding the efficacy of statins on the patient. Most of these studies and 3 recent meta-analyses have concluded that statins should be used for this purpose, even in patients with reduced low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. However, there are also conflicting results, most likely due to marked heterogeneity of patient characteristics, dosage and administration patterns of statins, definition of CI-AKI, and different statistical analyses. In conclusion, it is uncertain whether statins should be prescribed to prevent CI-AKI in the absence of other indications.
