Perceptions of Preceptors and Audiology Students on Practicum During the COVID-19 Pandemic

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to assess the perceptions of audiology students and preceptors regarding changes in the practicum as a result of COVID-19.

METHOD

This study was conducted during two different periods, with Internet questionnaires posted on social media forums. Preceptors and newly graduated clinicians were recruited in 2019 for a study prior to COVID-19, and students and preceptors were recruited for comparison during COVID-19. Four groups participated in this study: (a) 101 students who were enrolled in the second, third, or fourth year of an Israeli communication disorders Bachelor of Arts (BA) program during the pandemic; (b) 94 newly graduated audiologists with a BA degree from an Israeli communication disorders program granted in the last 3 years (before COVID-19); (c) 18 audiologist preceptors who supervised audiology practicum in an Israeli communication disorders BA programs (before COVID-19); and (d) 20 audiologist preceptors who, during COVID-19, were supervising an audiology practicum in Israel. Perceptions of the various groups were compared.

RESULTS

Although perceptions of preceptors and students regarding the practicum were revealed to be similar, perceptions of the practicum before COVID-19 underwent changes in the course of the pandemic. In evaluating the COVID-19 experience, both preceptors and students agreed that more hours of practicum were needed, as well as more variety in types of cases and exposure to varied placements.

CONCLUSION

Academic programs and employers should consider implications of changes implemented in the practicum due to COVID-19, which can be addressed either in continuing education and/or by additional supervision in the future workplace.

Longitudinal Study of Changes in Occupational Therapy Students' Perspectives on Frames of Reference

We explored students' views of the value of frames of reference (FoR) as they progressed through the didactic portion of an occupational therapy program. Thirty-four occupational therapy students were provided with a definition of FoR and asked to provide overall thoughts and impressions about FoR and their value 4 times over a period of 15 mo. Data were analyzed using phenomenological traditions, including open coding and analysis of themes. Throughout the program, students' understanding of how to use FoR evolved as they learned to implement them in practice. Opinions of the use of FoR seemed to be influenced by the students' perceptions of the use of FoR by their Level I fieldwork supervisors. Themes from the narrative data are described and their implications discussed.

An Exploratory Study of the Occupation-Focused Models Included in Occupational Therapy Professional Education Programmes

Introduction:

Occupation-focused models are one method of integrating occupation into occupational therapy education programmes. They offer a theoretical basis for practice by providing explanations about the process and practice of the profession.

Method:

This exploratory study used a quantitative research framework to investigate which occupation-focused models are included in occupational therapy programmes, the rationale for their inclusion and how the models are integrated into curricula. A survey was sent to 193 occupational therapy programmes in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Results:

The response rate was 33.8% (n = 65). The data showed that each programme included between 3 and 10 occupation-focused models. The Canadian Model of Occupational Performance and Engagement and the Model of Human Occupation were included in 98.5% of all curricula surveyed.

Conclusion:

The educators used a multilayered decision-making process to determine which occupation-focused models to include in a curriculum. The instructional methods varied, but most programmes used practice placement education as a teaching strategy. Further research is required into how curriculum design influences a practitioner's future use of occupation-focused models in practice. A better understanding is needed of how professional practice education affects students' values and attitudes towards the use of occupation-focused models.

Commonalities in Level II Fieldwork Failure

Despite the efforts of academic educators and fieldwork supervisors, not all students successfully complete their Level II field-work experience (AOTA, 1997). This study used quantitative and qualitative data to identify common characteristics surrounding Level II fieldwork failure. Eleven participants responded to a questionnaire regarding their experience in supervising a student who failed a Level II fieldwork experience; six also participated in a telephone interview to provide additional information regarding the experience. Students in this study who failed a Level II fieldwork experience exhibited poor problem solving skills, poor clinical reasoning skills, had difficulty getting the "big picture," and had difficulty responding to constructive feedback. Additionally, supervisors reportedly believe students were academically unprepared for the fieldwork experience. In this study, there were common characteristics, including student attributes and supervisors' strategies for dealing with problematic behaviors, which existed in the circumstances surrounding Level II fieldwork failure.

Project placements for undergraduate occupational therapy students: design, implementation and evaluation

This study aimed to document the process undertaken to incorporate project placements as an effective fieldwork option for second- and third-year occupational therapy students, by evaluating the experience of both students and supervisors and identifying areas for improvement. Project placements are full- or part-time placements where a project is completed by a student under the supervision of an occupational therapist. The study is primarily descriptive, and includes a pre-post design using qualitative and quantitative data. The results indicate that the objectives of the study were achieved. Both supervisors and students expressed positive views about the placements. Students also identified changes that could improve the placements. Second- and third-year students gave similar ratings about aspects of the learning experiences during the project placements. The small cohort of third-year students and the low response rate from supervisors limited results. These project placements have shown an applicable model for students in earlier years of the course instead of the usual practice of non-traditional fieldwork being focused on final-year students. The project placements described are presented as one more potential fieldwork model in the range currently offered by curricula worldwide. Future research needs to concentrate on the longitudinal impact of these placements on the developing practice and attitudes of occupational therapy students.

Integration tutorials and seminars: a creative learning approach for occupational therapy curricula

This paper, the first of two companion papers, describes a creative learning approach. Integration Tutorials and Seminars were developed to address concerns of regional fieldwork-education coordinators and preceptors about the ability of third-year student occupational therapists to integrate and apply academic and theoretical knowledge during fieldwork. This ability can be gained through experiential learning in the academic setting and is essential for the effective transfer of academic learning into the students' fieldwork-education experiences (Dale, 1994; Fidler, 1996; McCaugherty, 1991; Neistadt, 1996). The Modified Learning Model of Svinicki and Dixon (1987) was used as a template for an academic course fostering experiential learning. An important secondary goal was to nurture student self-directedness in learning using the philosophy of the Staged Self-Directed Learning Model (Grow, 1991). Case studies were used as a vehicle for engaging and challenging the students. The philosophy, guidelines and process of the Integration Tutorials and Seminars are presented and have the potential to be adapted for occupational therapy curricula around the globe.
