Rapid Reviews to Support Practice: A Guide for Professional Organization Practice Networks

Background. Occupational Therapists, among other healthcare decision makers, often need to make decisions within limited timeframes and cannot wait for the completion of large rigorous systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Rapid reviews are one method to increase the integration of research evidence into clinical decision making. Rapid reviews streamline the systematic review process to allow for the timely synthesis of evidence; however, there does not exist a single agreed upon guide for the methodology and reporting of rapid reviews. Purpose. This paper proposes a rapid review methodology that is customized to a professional organization practice which can feasibly be used by practice networks such as those of the Canadian Association for Occupational Therapy to conduct reviews. Implications. Practice networks provide a sustainable mechanism to integrate research evidence and foster communication amongst practitioners. This guide for conducting and reporting rapid reviews can be used across Occupational Therapy practice networks and similar groups to support the consistent and timely synthesis of evidence necessary to improve evidence-informed clinical decision making.

What makes home environments favorable to independence: perspectives of autistic people and their parents

PURPOSE

Few autistic adolescents and adults manage to integrate a home that enables them to fully exercise their independence, even if that is a desire shared by many of them. Creating residential environments that are favorable to their independence at home is a promising, yet poorly explored, avenue. The aim of this study conducted in Québec (Canada) is to identify the main environmental factors influencing their independence at home from the perspectives of autistic people and their parents.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The walking interview method was used to collect the perspectives of 10 dyads composed of an autistic person and at least one of their parents.

RESULTS

Participants identified several factors, including: (a) support from parents, (b) support from extended social network, (c) a physical environment that meets one's needs, (d) clear time indicators, (e) opportunities to perform life habits in other settings, and (f) support from professionals. They also gave many examples of concrete ways to implement these factors at home and suggested elements to consider when modifying the home environment.

CONCLUSIONS

The results emphasize the need to involve both autistic people and their parents during the evaluation and implementation of these factors to optimize their benefits. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONModifying the residential environments of autistic people is a promising way to foster their independence at home.The environmental factors of supportive home environments identified in this study can be used as a starting point when designing home environments for autistic people.As the needs and preferences of autistic people vary, they must be involved in the selection and the implementation of modifications in their home environments.Parents have a key role to play to support the development of their youth's independence at home.

Independent living in adults with autism spectrum disorder: Stakeholders' perspectives and experiences

Independent living is a basic human right that enables individuals with disabilities to determine where they live, who they live with and what kind of support that they receive. Limited research exists regarding the challenges that adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may face when attempting to live independently. Given the importance of independent living for adults with ASD, this study aimed to examine the perspectives of stakeholders about independent living among adults with ASD.

METHODS

We recruited a total of 19 stakeholders including adults with ASD and parents of adults with ASD from Canadian provinces. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted to identify factors affecting independent living among adults with ASD. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify overarching themes.

RESULTS

Three themes emerged in our findings, including: a) Psychophysical stability and daily living; b) Financial management and planning; and c) Integrated community living and independence.

CONCLUSION

The findings from this study suggest that adults with ASD face several challenges related to independent living. Factors related to psychophysical stability and daily living, financial management, and integrated community living and housing were all found to influence the ability of adults with ASD to live independently. By exploring stakeholders' perspectives of independent living for adults with ASD, this study provides some insight that can help inform the development of programs and services to facilitate independent living for adults with ASD.

Video Self-Modeling for a Student with Dravet Syndrome: An Intervention Involving Parents during COVID-19 Pandemic in Italy

Video self-modeling instruction offers advantages compared to in-vivo instruction but has not been used with individuals with Dravet syndrome. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of video self-modeling (VSM) on three different behaviors of a 12-year-old boy with Dravet syndrome. We taught the participant's mother to use video-modeling instruction via role-playing and feedback and evaluated effects of VSM using a multiple-baseline design across behaviors: ordering numbers in descending sequence, positioning features on a face, and reading words. The VSM increased performance accuracy for all three skills, suggesting that VSM interventions via telehealth may provide an effective and sustainable option for skill development.

What happens after high school? A review of independent living practices to support youth with disabilities transitioning to adult life

BACKGROUND: Centers for Independent Living (CILs) can help out-of-school youth with disabilities. CIL services may be particularly important for minority youth with disabilities that face additional transition barriers. OBJECTIVE: This literature review documents existing practices that might aid CILs as they seek to help youth, including minority youth, with disabilities transition to adult life. METHODS: First, we conducted a literature search to identify practices that might help CILs assist youth with disabilities transition to independent living (IL) in early adult life. Then we examined various literature syntheses of postsecondary transition interventions with evidence of promise or efficacy for any IL-related outcome—regardless of whether the intervention targeted youth with disabilities. RESULTS: We discovered a variety of practices CILs might learn from or consider adopting to help youth with disabilities transition to adult life. However, the practices rarely focused on minority youth and usually had limited or no evidence about whether they improved IL outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The limitations of the evidence we found suggest the need to develop and test interventions that help transition age youth with disabilities—especially minority youth with disabilities—achieve their IL goals.
