Extending the Tradition of The Counseling Psychologist by Building on Strengths

This article describes The Counseling Psychologist’s (TCP’s) format and content, policy issues, editing experiences, and the interplay of professional and social forces during the first two editorial years of P. Paul Heppner (1997-1998). Given the real heritage of the journal and existing resources, the primary mission has been to extend the tradition of TCP by building on the journal’s many strengths.

A Proposal for Internationalizing Counseling Psychology in the United States:

This article, written by the coeditors of The Counseling Psychologist' s (TCP) International Forum section, reviews the status of counseling psychology from an international perspective and presents a rational and modest proposal for promoting counseling psychology's commitment to global perspectives. The brief history of TCP' s International Forum section is reviewed and specific recommendations for internationalizing counseling psychology are put forth. These recommendations are organized along (a) methods of psychological science, (b) profession-based initiatives, (c) Division 17 (counseling psychology) initiatives, and (d) program-specific activities. The marked challenges to internationalizing counseling psychology are also addressed.

Trend Analyses of Major Contributions in The Counseling Psychologist Cited from 1986 to 1996

This study commemorates the 30th anniversary of The Counseling Psychologist (TCP), the official publication of Division 17 since 1969. The investigation analyzes trends in the professional citations of the Major Contribution articles from the inception of TCP in 1969 through 1995. Results indicate (a) the impact factors and citation half-life statistics for Major Contribution articles for the years 1986 to 1996, (b) that citations of Major Contributions have increased over the past 11 years, (c) that Major Contribution articles are cited across a diverse range of disciplines, (d) that the number of Major Contribution articles in an issue is negatively related to the average number of citations for an issue, (e) the top 10 most frequently cited Major Contribution articles, (f) the percentages of Major Contributions published by men and women, and (g) emerging topic areas from citations of Major Contributions published from 1991 to 1995. Implications of the results are discussed with regard to professional issues, TCP, and future research.

Legacies and Traditions of Counseling Psychology: When the Past Is Our Future

The Legacies & Traditions Forum has a rich past of documenting individual contributions to the profession of counseling psychology. The history of this forum, as well as early contributors and journal articles, are identified.Themes that emerged from a review of past oral biographies include changes in the work setting for counseling psychologists, value of supportive environments, and barriers that early leaders experienced. In general, contributors to the forum have been pioneers in the profession, with many holding leadership roles in governing at the national level, and early involvement in social justice. The two-tier survey process implemented to identify those who most warrant being interviewed at this time for the forum is described. The newest co-editors will continue to invite biographical manuscripts based on the highlighted process, while also expanding the forum to include articles focusing on critical events or historically important topics within the field of counseling psychology.
