Widowed Young: The Role of Stressors and Protective Factors for Resilience in Coping with Spousal Loss

Does time heal all wounds? An investigation of time, grief, and attitudes toward death

When experiencing the loss of a loved one, individuals adapt and change how they understand death, how they interpret the meaning of the loss, and how they remember the deceased. In the present study (N = 164), we investigated whether the time since the loss - recent or distant - was associated with individuals' bereavement, attitudes toward death, and their meaning of death. We found that individuals who experienced a recent loss reported more grief and more negative death attitudes compared to individuals who experienced a loss more than 5 years ago. Moreover, the bereavement appeared to completely mediate the time since the loss and the individuals' attitudes about death. The findings suggest that time-dependent adaptations after a loss shifts individuals' death attitudes, grief symptoms, and thoughts about death.

The Relationship Between Perceived Parental Competence and Bereavement Outcomes in Widows With Young Children

Adjustment to bereavement, while a normative life experience, is one that impacts every aspect of life. Widows with young children face the unique challenge of managing both their grief and the grief of their child while also redefining roles, responsibilities, and resources. This study used a cross-sectional survey method to explore the relationship between perceived parental competence and bereavement outcomes in widows with young children (n = 232). Participants completed study measures including a demographic survey, the Revised Grief Experience Inventory, and the Parental Sense of Competence Scale. Results indicate that the constructs of competence, parenting self-efficacy and parental satisfaction, were directly correlated to decreased grief experiences. Additionally, grief experiences were found to be higher in widows reporting lower levels of education, those who were not currently in a relationship, and those who had more children to care for. This study highlights the potential that perceived parental competence has to influence the grief experience for widows and their bereaved children.

Resilience to depression: Implication for psychological vaccination

From the vulnerability perspective, we often ask the question "why someone suffers from depression?" Despite outstanding achievements along this line, we still face high occurrence or recurrence and unsatisfied therapeutic efficacy of depression, suggesting that solely focusing on vulnerability perspective is insufficient to prevent and cure depression. Importantly, although experiencing same adversity, most people do not suffer from depression but manifest certain resilience, which could be used to prevent and cure depression, however, the systematic review is still lack. Here, we propose the concept "resilience to depression" to emphasize resilient diathesis against depression, by asking the question "why someone is exempted from depression?" Research evidence of resilience to depression has been reviewed systematically: positive cognitive style (clear purpose in life, hopefulness, et al.), positive emotion (emotional stability, et al.), adaptive behavior (extraversion, internal self-control, et al.), strong social interaction (gratitude and love, et al.), and neural foundation (dopamine circuit, et al.). Inspired by these evidence, "psychological vaccination" could be achieved by well-known real-world natural-stress vaccination (mild, controllable, and adaptive of stress, with help from parents or leaders) or newly developed "clinical vaccination" (positive activity intervention for current depression, preventive cognitive therapy for remitted depression, et al.), both of which aim to enhance the resilient psychological diathesis against depression, through events or training. Potential neural circuit vaccination was further discussed. This review calls for directing attention to resilient diathesis against depression, which offers a new thinking "psychological vaccination" in both prevention and therapy of depression.
